2011 in Review: U.S. troops kill Osama bin Laden

Editor's note: The Dec. 30 edition of the Frisco Enterprise contains the top 10 stories of 2011. These stories represent the most notorious moments in the city, state and the nation.

A sense of relief and jubilation rings throughout the area; coupled with a sense of caution.

The death of Osama bin Laden, killed by United States Navy SEALs in his Pakistani mansion hideout, has Americans celebrating in virtually every city in North Texas and throughout the country.

The reminders of the death and destruction of 9/11 came rushing forth Sunday night when President Barack Obama told the world that a military operation weeks in the making ended when bin Laden was shot in the head by U.S. forces.

Residents and visitors of New York City celebrated throughout the night at the site of the World Trade Center, destroyed when bin Laden's attack on the United States took place almost 10 years ago. The dancing, laughing and crying for joy soon spread throughout the country.

Reaction ranged from jubilation for many, to tones of caution as Americans were warned that a retaliatory strike could be in the planning stages. That warning did little to quell the excitement felt as Americans finally believed that justice had been served to the mass murderer whose plan resulted in the death of thousands.

Obama announced on television the death of bin Laden, bringing an end to a manhunt that began in earnest Sept. 11, 2001.

"Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we've made great strides [to find bin Laden]. We've disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al-Qaida safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al-Qaida terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot."

A member of the local Muslim community expressed happiness that the terror leader had been killed.

"Bin Laden was never a Muslim leader," said Dr. Jari Khan, secretary of public affairs and media of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Dallas Chapter. "He was a mass murderer, a man who killed in the name of Islam. We are happy that he has met his end and now together we can work for a peaceful society. Our prayers continue to go out to the families of the 9/11 tragedy. Terrorism in all areas must be ended."

Rep. Sam Johnson aimed his praise at the military.

"Way to go troops," he said. "Thank you for your tireless courage and deep resolve. We are proud of you. God bless you and I salute you.

"Whether it's shooting Somali pirates from a heaving ship at sea to rescue innocent Americans or finding and killing Osama bin Laden, the nation owes a debt of gratitude to the Navy SEALs --and all men and women who wear the uniform. This is a victory for freedom and justice."

The preceding story contains excerpts of the column written by Rick Mann on May 2, the day Osama bin Laden was killed.

A Comparison of Recent Presidential Vacation Time (ContributorNetwork)

Presidential vacations are typically a working retreat and often draw a lot of attention from the press. The location, length and cost of traveling American presidents commonly garner even more headlines during an election year. This week, President Barack Obama spent the afternoon with his family on the beach in Hawaii released green sea turtles into the ocean with Sea Life Park staffers, according to ABC News. Before returning to Washington next week the president is expected to request Congress to increase the debt ceiling by $16 trillion, according to ABC News.

Obama

President Obama opted not to stay at his Winter White House in Hawaii during this visit. He and his family are renting a beachfront home on Kailua. President Obama's staff and the White House Press Corps are staying nearby at the Westin Moana Surfrider hotel, according to the Huffington Post. The president's vacation cost the taxpayers $4 million, approximately $2.5 million more than the first family's trip to Hawaii last year, according to the Huffington Post.

Prior to the Christmas trip to Hawaii, President Obama had spent 61 days during his first 31 months in office. The cost of the president's 11-day vacation to Martha's Vineyard required rental homes for secret service agents, armored SUVs were flown to the area to transport the Obama's, a motorcade of approximately 20 cars and security coverage by the U.S. Coast Guard, according to CBS News.

George W. Bush

President Bush spent 180 days on his Crawford Ranch and at Camp David during his first 31 months in office, according to CBS News. The cost of flying Air Force One to the Texas ranch cost approximately $56,800 per trip, according to Media Matters. President Bush spent each Christmas at the White House so his staff and secret service could spend the holiday with their family, according to Conservative Byte.

Bill Clinton

President Clinton spent 28 days on vacation during his first 31 months in office according to CBS News. Clinton typically vacationed at Martha's Vineyard and the Hamptons, but also took two summer trips to Jackson Hole, Wyo., according to History News Network. President Clinton spent 233 abroad during 55 trips, according to Truth Quake. A Clinton excursion in 2000 is pegged as the most expense presidential trip ever, with a price tag of $50 million, according to the Free Republic.

Ronald Reagan

President Reagan spent 112 days on vacation during his first 31 months in office according to CBS News. He spent most of his vacation time on his California ranch near Santa Barbara, according to NBC Bay Area News. The White House communications team and national security staff accompanied President Reagan during trips home to his ranch. President Reagan issued the order to fire striking air force controllers during a vacation at his ranch in 1981, according to NBC Bay Area News. Taxpayers covered the cost of approximately $8 million for presidential travel during the Reagan's first 6 years in office, according to the LA Times.

BGR says a source close to the company claims the iPhone will launch next fall, around the time the iPhone 4S launched this year. Pop Herald is predicting a 4-inch screen, which would require app developers to overhaul their products to avoid poor resolution.

But as we all know, iPhone rumors will come in all shapes and flavors before the upcoming launch. What do you think about this set?

The Best Presentations App for Windows [Windows App Directory]

The Best Presentations App for WindowsWindows users don't have a ton of choices when it comes to making presentations, but the well-known PowerPoint has all the features you need for putting together a great presentation.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

  • Create attractive presentations instantly using a number of pre-built themes
  • Create 2D and 3D charts
  • Add dynamic 3D slide transitions and realistic animation effects
  • Embed images and videos in your presentations, even remote ones?like videos from YouTube
  • Edit images and videos right from PowerPoint
  • Compress media inside your presentation for smaller file size
  • Create a video of your presentation for broadcast to anyone, anywhere, even if they don't have PowerPoint installed.
  • Collaborate with others on the same presentation in real time even from different locations.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

PowerPoint is simply the most feature-filled presentation app out there for Windows. Most others don't even come close, what with its built-in photo editing, media compression, and collaboration features which allow you to work on your project from anywhere. It also makes the most attractive presentations of any of its competitors, which is important when you need to make a splash with your presentation. And, with the foundation of Microsoft Office, it's pretty easy to add charts from Microsoft Excel rather than try to create them in some unknown program. It's not necessarily that PowerPoint is amazing, it's just that no other Windows counterpart comes close.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

As with all Microsoft Office programs, you have to deal with the $120 price tag and painful installation that comes with a program like PowerPoint. It could also be faster, but at this point, it's no slower than the competition, so it's hard to complain. Similarly, while its photo and video editing tools could be more advanced, it's hard to expect them to be as advanced as dedicated photo and video editing tools. If you have a lot of editing to do, you won't be able to do it with PowerPoint, but for more basic video trimming and image adjustments, it's nice to not have to open up another program.

The Best Presentations App for Windows

As always the main competition for Microsoft Office is the free LibreOffice Impress. LibreOffice's big advantage is that you don't need to pay, and while your presentations will not be nearly as good-looking or easy to craft as they would in PowerPoint, if you rarely create them, it's easier to justify a $0 cost. Also keep in mind that while LibreOffice can open PowerPoint files, it rarely does it perfectly, so if you're looking for compatibility you're best off getting the real deal.

Your other free choice is Google Docs. Again, it isn't nearly as advanced as PowerPoint, but it does have advantages. Its collaboration features, for instance, are much easier to use than PowerPoint's. You don't need a Windows Live or SharePoint account; you just jump in and start editing with your Google account. It also has very easy video embedding from things like YouTube. It is, however, more basic, and you don't have quite as many themes to choose from (not to mention the complete lack of transitions). Still, for simple presentations on which collaboration is necessary, it could be worth a look.

We didn't find very many presentation apps beyond the staple office suites, so if you know of a hidden gem that's worth a look, be sure to let us know in the comments.

AL woman to discontinue tornado Facebook site

By JEFF MARTIN
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - In the weeks and months after tornadoes tore through homes across the South, pictures and documents rained on yards hundreds of miles away.

An Alabama woman began collecting them in an online database, posting the cherished scraps of people's lives on Facebook so they could be identified and claimed by grateful families.

Now, eight months after the April tornadoes struck in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, Patty Bullion says she plans to discontinue the online database of pictures and documents.

She says she will leave Facebook page up for a couple more weeks, then take it down and focus on other things in her life. She said the items pictured are highly personal, and she doesn't think they should be online indefinitely.
