Google Enter Tablet Market With Nexus 7

Google has announced its first venture into the competitive tablet market, with the launch of its first device, the Nexus 7.

The new tablet was unveiled by Google during an event at the search engine giant?s developer conference, held in San Francisco this week.

With a high definition seven-inch screen, a super fast ?quad-core? processor, the latest Android operating system and nine hours of continuous video playback, the Nexus 7 is an impressive debut into the tablet market from Google.

It is clear that Google are aiming to usurp their tablet rivals with this device, particularly Apple and their ever popular iPad. The 8GB model of the Google Nexus 7 will be retailing in Britain for just ?159, compared to the ?399 you would have to shell out for a 16GB iPad, the lowest spec in the range.

However, Google will also have to do battle with a number of other tablet devices, most notably the Amazon Fire, which has been on the market for a while without making too many waves, and the Microsoft Surface, also unveiled this week and seen as a viable contender to challenge Apple?s tablet domination.

Google?s Hugo Berra said at the launch: ?It has always been a goal of the Nexus programme to provide the best experience. We wanted to design a ?Best of Google? experience. The Nexus 7 is made for Google Play, your content is front and centre.?

Jaimie Etkin: 'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: The Black Swan Revealed And Maya's Cousin Comes To Town

After last week's big Jenna reveal, the Little Liars are eating little crumbs of chocolate cake back at the Rose Apple Grille discussing who could be the new "A," i.e. who's making necklaces out of Ali's pearly whites. "They're only cake crumbs because these girls don't really eat cake," my mom says.

Half-believing Jenna's joyride story, they cross her off and move on to Lucas, who Hanna also dismisses because he just couldn't dig up a grave. "All roads lead back to the Black Swan," Spencer says. And Hanna thinks it has to be Melissa. Emily buys it but Spencer and Aria are skeptical so Hanna says she'll consult Mon-A next time she dares to give her a mental institution makeover.

Suddenly, Jason barges in and questions Mariska about defending Garrett. He really should be questioning her about her new bangs, which my mom says are "hipster." When she says she's doing it because everyone deserves legal representation, he questions whether or not she has other motives. After she tells him to focus on his family, he storms out and posts a flyer:

"Reward $50,000 for any information about Alison DeLaurentis' remains."

Ding-a-ling-aling. The Liars have a text:
"Imagine what I could do with 50 grand
-A"

When they get back to the Parentless Hastings House, Spencer confronts Mariska about the flyers and asks what would happen to whoever came forward. Because stealing a body's a felony, they'd go to jail for at least 10 years and probably would also get a life sentence for killing Alison.

The next day at school, Aria is channeling "Pretty Woman" and Mariah Carey in her leopard-print, low-cut, puffy-sleeve cocktail dress with a butterfly necklace. "Aria looks like she is going on a job interview," my mom says, as I wonder if she thinks Aria's applying to be Rosewood's resident hooker. She's complaining about her dad's new after shave -- which "smells like baby wipes" -- but really, that's the least of her problems. Her mom doesn't know that Byron is dating Meredith again.

Aria asks her mom to dinner, which is awkward, but she's trying to convince her mom to be social. But, "she'd much rather spend a quiet night alone" with Aria, which is a totally normal for a mother to say to her daughter.

Hanna is on a mission to reveal the identity of the Black Swan, but when she gets to Radley, the tight-bunned, tight-assed nurse/receptionist says Mon-A is no longer allowed visitors because all medical professionals behave and wear their hair like this.

Meanwhile, Emily's been spending so much at the nameless hip Season 3 coffee shop that apparently, she decided to start working there too. Suddenly, a strapping young man walks in and says he's Maya's cousin, Nate. Emily says it's not a good time to chat since, you know, she literally just started working 45 seconds ago, but agrees to call him later. "Maya's cousin is wearing a shit ton of makeup," I note. "It's a Nate thing," my mom says, referring to "Gossip Girl's" Mr. Archibald.

Back at home, Hanna is on the phone trying to get behind what happened with Mon-A when Caleb walks in with Bon Iver tickets. She isn't jumping up and down -- and not just because his music would put anyone to sleep -- because she just talked to Wren who said Mon-A freaked out after some guy paid her a visit. Hanna's quick to accuse Lucas, but Caleb confesses and says she needs to stop visiting Mon-A. She doesn't agree -- and neither does Wren, apparently. "Wren is up to no good. ?He's been around wayyyyyyy too long?," I say. "He is a worm," my mom agrees, before a "Magic Mike" commercial has her begging me to accompany her to what she calls, "Channing's true life story like on E!" Anyway, back to the Haleb drama. Caleb leaves, but not before tossing the Bon Iver tickets. But really, that was for the best.

Hanna and Aria, who's sitting at her laptop, discuss the fight and Hanna contemplates telling Caleb "about this 'A.'" Aria says she'd tell Ezra ... because they're the model for relationship perfection.

Aria's computer screen is filled with "pictures of bald, fat men," Hanna notes and Aria says she's looking for a man for her mom. Hanna says online dating isn't necessary because Ella's "a catch." My mom wants clarification: "What kind of catch??? A smelly fish kind???" she asks.

Ashley walks in and sees what the girls are up to. In search for "someone who doesn't look like a grape" or have a unibrow, Ashley suggests they use MainLineMate.com and Hanna suggests they use the name "HotMama." My mom suggests, "Loser Lying Mama." Not quite as catchy, if you will.

Back at Rosewood High, Spencer is rocking some knee socks and approaches Jason. I completely forget why he's at the school in the first place. And I'm not alone. "So suddenly Jason appears and he has been teaching all this time and just not visible?" my mom asks. "I hate when they think they can pull the wool over our eyes." She urges him to let the police handle this and he urges her to think about why her mom took Garrett's case.

Over at some random bench, Emily meets up with Nate, who is now bespectacled just so we're clear he's a co-ed. They discuss Maya and her parents and Nate has a box that was delivered a few weeks after the funeral. "For My Em, Love You Girl," the card so eloquently reads. It's a tank top featuring the zombie movie they half-watched, half-made-out-through on their first date.

Back at Radley, Hanna decides to sneak into Radley to get to Mon-A. Just a word of advice: You might not want to wear neon and ruffles while breaking and entering. As she tip toes around, she sees Officer Wilden, who tells Wren he has a court order to talk to Mon-A. How long will he be in there, Wren asks? "As long at it takes," he says. Door slam. Z snap. (OK, so that last part didn't really happen.) Wren sees Hanna and the two talk about Mon-A.

Emily and Nate head to the Rose Apple Grille, which is regaining its prominence as Rosewood's prime eatery. They reminisce about Maya, but there seems to be a bit of a connection between them. It seems like there is going to be some weird mourning/transference hook-up situation. Nate tells Emily that Maya said she was "her first true love" and Emily says she needs some closure. She asks for her parents' address, but Nate suspiciously doesn't have it and he suspiciously left his book.

Back at the Parentless Hastings House, the girls are trying to convince Spencer, who is rocking some day sequins, that it was Melissa in the Black Swan costume. She's ready to find out once and for all so she picks up the car keys and bad-assedly declares, "Goin' to Philly!"

Ashley and Ella meet up at the nameless hip Season 3 coffee shop to discuss divorced life, MainLineMate.com anyhow they need men to take care of toilets. I ask them to "GO AWAY." My mom adds: "FAR FAR FAR AWAY. It's amazing these girls aren't all in the looney bin with Mona from having the parents they have."

Hanna, Aria and Emily are waiting outside Melissa's apartment for her to leave and Spencer will give them to green light to go in once Melissa takes the bait and meets her at the movie theater. They decide to go in assuming Melissa must have gotten there by now. "Let's find out when she lost that baby," Aria says.

Then, of course, Spencer gets a text that Melissa left her wallet and is coming back and though she tries to warn the other three liars, they miss her text while looking for Melissa's fake baby bump. But then, the girls spot her out the window. They scramble and completely unrealistically find the time to head in Melissa's very color-coded and very neat closet. Of course, she goes into the closet to get her wallet out of a jacket pocket, but somehow (i.e. this is a TV show), they're still safe. With Melissa gone, the Liars exit the closet, but not before finding a garment bag from a costume store. When they unzip, there's no costume, but there is a single feather. It's black and blue. (Get it?! Because she inflicts pain on people!)

When they return home, the feather matches the one Hanna found at the masquerade ball. Spencer isn't ready to point the finger at her sister, even though now, both Aria and Hanna agree. So she agrees to go back to Philly and confront Melissa.

But no need. When she gets home, Melissa's standing there in the dark with the butcher knife. You know, just cooking dinner slash preparing to kill. Melissa, who my mom deems "best creeper," says she's there to protect Mariska from Jason after his episode at the Grill. And suddenly, Spencer gets the balls to whip out the feather and accuse Melissa of being the Black Swan and lying about her miscarriage. Of course, this all happens without any lights on. "The Hastings don't pay their electric bill," my mom surmises. "No mom. It's a metaphor for them allays being in the dark."

Anyway, Melissa confesses to losing the baby the day after they found Ian's body. Melissa tried to tell Spencer the night of Ian's funeral, but then, she saw Ian's phone in Melissa's bag and thought she was blackmailing her. Suddenly, Mariska and her bangs enter and it's time for Melissa to come clean.

She says the dress came to her apartment with a note that said she had to wear it to the masquerade ball or everyone would find out about her baby. The note also said to distract Jenna at the ball. She's assuming it was Mon-A because she was taken to Radley that night and she was never threatened again.

After Melissa goes upstairs to lay down because being a Pretty Big Liar is exhausting, Spencer asks Mariska who else knows about the baby and the only non-Hasting is Garrett. She accuses her mom of defending him because he was blackmailing her, but she says it's because one of the defense witnesses Garrett's former attorney had come up with was the P.I. the Hastings hired to investigate Melissa after Alison went missing. She had to take on Garrett's case to protect Melissa. Melissa beckons and before she answers her call, Mariska tells Spencer, "Like it or not, this is your family." Umm ... NOT!

Hanna's on the phone with Aria talking about how Caleb is coming over and she's prepared to tell him, but then she gets a text. It says, "I'm everywhere, Hanna -A" and below is a photo of a crashed car and a Montecito EMT to the rescue. (Note: I have no idea what this means, but seemingly, Hanna does.) Caleb walks in and says his mom was in a car accident after someone tried to run her off the road. (OHHHHH!) She's okay, but Hanna's shaken. She can't tell Caleb out of fear he'll get hurt and he's had enough. He knows she's not being honest and she still won't come clean. There are tears. Caleb says she's not giving him much of a choice but to walk away. More tears. (Not Hanna's. My mom's.) "I'm crying now :( ," she says. "They would win the People's Choice Award for Best TV Couple." She is giving out lots of superlatives tonight.

Emily meets up one more time with Nate, who suspiciously still doesn't haven Maya's parents' address for her. But he takes her letter to them and says he'll send it. She returns his book and he says he's leaving Hollis because he's "having a tough time settling in." We understand. It has been three days, after all. We're not exactly sure what Nate is up to, because shopping sprees at Sephora.

Spencer goes out for an evening stroll and runs into Jason, who says he's received more than 200 calls from those who claim they know where Ali's remains are. Spencer says she's looking forward to heading to college and escaping all the drama. Jason says it's not that easy. "Trust me," he says. "You can leave Rosewood, but Rosewood will never leave you," which my mom says is "profound," though, she adds, "Jason is sketchy."

Then his phone rings and Spencer heads out, but not before Jason says he's withdrawing the reward. "The truth always comes out, Jason," she tells him. "One way or another."

But then, the audience is let in on yet another little secret: Jason writes a check to cash for $50,000 and returns the call he ignored previously, saying he'll meet whoever is on the other end in 15 minutes. Who could he be paying the money to? The private detective the Hastings hired?

As Spencer continues her walk home, Wilden pulls up and "curiously" asks, "How far away is your parents' lake house?"

Then, we see A at the airport, hacking into Radley's computer system and adjusting Mon-A's visiting privileges to "permitted" from the Montecito Airport, with drink in glove. So ... A's legal and seemingly likes mojitos.

(AP) ? Practically parked off Florida's Gulf Coast since the weekend, Tropical Storm Debby raked the Tampa Bay area with high wind and heavy rain Monday in a drenching that could top 2 feet over the next few days and trigger widespread flooding.

At least one person was killed Sunday by a tornado spun off by Debby in Florida, and Alabama authorities searched for a man who disappeared in the rough surf.

An estimated 35,000 homes and businesses lost electricity. But as of midafternoon, the slow-moving storm had caused only scattered damage, including flooding in some low-lying areas.

The bridge leading to St. George Island, a vacation spot along the Florida Panhandle, was closed to everyone except residents, renters and business owners to keep looters out. The island had no power, and palm trees had been blown down, but roads were passable.

"Most true islanders are hanging in there because they know that you may or may not be able to get back to your home when you need to," said David Walker, an island resident having a beer at Eddy Teach's bar. He said he had been through many storms on the island and Debby was on the weaker end of the scale.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency, allowing authorities to put laws against price-gouging into effect and override bureaucratic hurdles to deal with the storm.

By late afternoon, Debby was in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles southwest of Apalachicola, with sustained winds around 45 mph.

Forecasters said it would crawl to the northeast, come ashore along Florida's northwestern coast on Wednesday and track slowly across the state, exiting along the Atlantic Coast by Saturday morning and losing steam along the way.

Parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, and some spots as much as 25 inches, as the storm wrings itself out, forecasters said.

"The widespread flooding is the biggest concern," said Florida Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Julie Roberts. "It's a concern that Debby is going to be around for the next couple of days, and while it sits there, it's going to continue to drop rain. The longer it sits, the more rain we get."

High winds and the threat of flooding forced the closing of an interstate highway bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southwest.

People in several sparsely populated counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the danger of flooding. Shelters opened in some places.

On St. Pete Beach in the Tampa Bay area, surfers enjoyed the large waves in the Gulf, which is usually so calm the water looks like glass. Residents cleaned up debris in yards and streets from a possible tornado Sunday.

"The wind picked up so bad. It's very, very scary. I ran into the closet underneath the hallway stairs," said Ann Garrison, who has lived on the barrier island for 20 years but has never seen such strong winds. She said that when she came back out after just a few minutes, "the fence was gone, and it was in the middle of the yard."

Nearby, a likely tornado ripped the roof off a marina and an apartment complex and knocked down fences, trees and signs.

Kourosh Bakhtiarian's yard was flooded. He said people were driving around the neighborhood to gawk at the damage, and he complained that police hadn't closed off the streets.

"We have a lot of visitors from outside of this area. They just want to see exactly where the disaster is. I mean, this is not the happiest time," he said.

On St. George Island, many businesses were closed, but Eddy Teach's bar had a few customers and used a generator to keep beer and food cold.

"The tourists cleared out. It's not a good thing and hurts the economy during a week in peak season," said Patrick Sparks, a manager at the bar. He scoffed at the storm, which was well below the 74 mph threshold for a hurricane: "It's a little rash to send everyone home."

Old battery gets a high-tech makeover

Redesigned nickel-iron battery gives modern lithium-ion devices a run for their money

Web edition : 2:18 pm

A rechargeable battery patented by Thomas Edison more than a century ago is staging a comeback. The nickel-iron battery may yet prove to be a viable power source for electric cars, as the inventor had intended.

Thanks to a redesign, Edison?s battery can now store almost as much energy, gram for gram, as the lithium-ion battery in Nissan?s all-electric car, the Leaf. But the redesigned battery charges faster and promises to be cheaper and safer, researchers report online June 26 in Nature Communications.?

?People abandoned this type of battery in the 1970s because there were better batteries at the time,? says Hongjie Dai, a chemist at Stanford University. ?We have made the Edison battery interesting again by drastically increasing the ability to charge and discharge it.?

Edison?s original design, patented in 1901, calls for two metal electrodes. A mixture of iron compounds and carbon gives off electricity that flows to a sheet of nickel, discharging the battery. Though hardy, it didn?t usher in the revolution in electric cars that Edison had hoped for. Ultimately it was eclipsed by other technologies, including the lithium-ion battery, that stored and delivered more energy.

To resurrect Edison?s battery, Dai and colleagues reshaped its electrodes at nanometer scales. Instead of simply mixing iron and carbon, the researchers grew iron pellets on top of atom-thick sheets of carbon chicken wire called graphene. Tiny plates of nickel perched atop carbon tubes formed the other electrode.

This attention to detail united each metal and its carbon counterpart with chemical bonds that provided a superhighway for electrons. A small prototype battery charged in about two minutes and discharged within 30 seconds, nearly 1,000 times faster than traditional nickel-iron designs. That speediness could be useful for juicing up a car in a hurry or storing and releasing the energy flowing through the larger power grid.

If scaled up for use in cars, nickel-iron batteries may be cheaper than batteries made from lithium, which is less abundant in Earth?s crust. Also, the fluid electrolyte between iron and nickel electrodes isn?t flammable, so the battery won?t have the safety problems that have caused lithium-ion batteries to explode, says Dai.

Despite its advantages, the Edison reboot still has a ways to go to prove itself. It faces competition from new lithium technologies under development that promise to store more than twice the energy in current lithium-ion batteries. And the researchers still need to show that their laboratory battery can scale up to larger sizes.

?Quoting power and energy density from small lab cells is not realistic,? says M. Stanley Whittingham, a chemist at Binghamton University in New York. ?Real cells typically have capacities of only 20 percent of the numbers calculated in the lab.?

Building a bigger battery may be the only way that Edison?s 20th-century scheme will come of age in the 21st century.

Obama ad seeks to counter 'doing fine' criticism

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign is using a new television ad to refute Republican attacks on Obama's recent assertion that the private sector is "doing fine."

The ad says Republican rival Mitt Romney and his "billionaire allies will spend millions to distort the president's words." A clip in the background shows Obama making the comments about the private sector at a recent news conference.

Republicans seized on Obama's words, saying they were a sign that he doesn't understand the economy. Obama and his aides quickly sought to backtrack, insisting the president knows the economy is not doing fine.

In the new ad, titled "Rebuild," Obama says he understands when he talks to Americans that the weak economy "wears on them."

The ads are running in nine states, including Florida and Ohio.

Sydney Harbor: Trash Found From More Than 200 Years Ago

From Mother Nature Network's Russell McLendon:

Sydney Harbor is one of the world's most picturesque seaports, renowned for both its natural beauty and iconic architecture. Yet after two centuries as the front porch of a major metropolis, it also hides an ugly secret below the surface: Garbage now blankets the seabed around Sydney, some of it nearly as old as the city itself.

All this trash causes a variety of local problems, environmentalists say, such as leaching toxic chemicals into seawater or tempting marine animals to eat tiny bits of plastic. And it may feed a much broader environmental threat, too, since some of the debris washes out to sea and could ultimately join the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

But thanks to a coalition of local divers and environmentalists, Sydney Harbor's garbage problem is undergoing a rare ? albeit slow ? change of fortune. As the BBC and Yahoo News report, Sydney-area divers have begun volunteering their time and talents to manually remove trash from the harbor floor, tackling a massive problem that has festered behind the scenes for nearly two centuries.

"The stuff on the bottom has been accumulating for 200 years, and it's only now we're really trying to pull it out in any sort of quantity," local diver Dave Thomas tells Australia's Seven News. "It's been out of sight and out of mind."

The effort is led by two Sydney-based conservation groups: Eco Divers, which conducts marine research and rehab missions via scuba diving, and the Two Hands Project, which rallies volunteers for beach cleanups and other environmental ventures. As Thomas tells Seven News, this kind of work comes naturally to people who spend a lot of time in the ocean. "As a diver you see this stuff, and if it was on land you would be disgusted," he says, "and you would do something about it."

Loose garbage remains a problem in urban areas worldwide, but coastal cities face unique challenges: Their own trash can hide offshore, either lurking in place or washing into ocean gyres, and they can also receive transoceanic trash from other cities, such as Japan's tsunami debris now reaching U.S. shores. Sydney's waste woes are especially severe, both for the local environment and for the Pacific at large, since ocean currents can carry debris to New Zealand and beyond, potentially feeding garbage patches in the North Pacific. The local government hasn't ignored the issue, though ? it employs a harbor cleanup team, for example, which began boosting its productivity in the 1990s by using prison inmates to help it collect trash.

But the prison-labor program was nixed in late 2010, and as the Sydney Morning Herald reported earlier this year, trash removal from the harbor has fallen since then ? even as heavy rains washed more debris out to sea. State cleanup crews collected just 2,284 cubic meters (80,658 cubic feet) of waste in Sydney Harbor during the last financial year, the paper reported, down 18 percent from the year before. This was partly due to other factors, namely the temporary loss of a key cleanup vessel, but losing so much labor has likely also played a role.

"One can draw the conclusion that there would be more litter in the harbor," Peter McLean, the New South Wales director of Keep Australia Beautiful, told the Herald in January. "I hate to see programs like this not continue in some form. It would certainly be very detrimental." Yet despite such setbacks, the NSW government maintains its stated goal of having Australia's lowest per capita litter count by 2016.

Eco Divers' and Two Hands' cleanup efforts could help with that, but it won't be easy. As the BBC reports, some of Sydney's marine debris is big and unwieldy, such as old bicycles and bathtubs, and even smaller objects like plastic bags, bottles and fishing lures are labor-intensive to remove by hand. And while it's hard enough to collect two centuries' worth of trash from the bottom of a busy harbor, more than 900 metric tons of garbage also washes back onto local beaches every year, much of it becoming trapped on rocky shores, Seven News reports. Sydney cleanup crews cover some 12,000 acres of waterways and 170 miles of shoreline, according to the Herald.

It is a daunting task, but as Two Hands' Dean Cropp tells the BBC, any progress is worth the trouble. "Unless someone cleans it up, it could be there for years," he says. "It could be there for hundreds of years ? doing damage the whole time."

For a closer look at Sydney Harbor's litter problem, see this video from Seven News:

Super fans behind comic book films' super success

ScienceDaily (June 19, 2012) ? Comic book movies -- they can make record box office profits in a single weekend: inspire toys, clothing, and other merchandise collected by generations of people from all walks of life; and this summer, just as they have during recent, past summers, comic book movies will be major draws at theaters across the country and around the world.

But why are we continuing to see film after film based on comic book heroes -- sometimes witnessing the same characters reinvented numerous times, as is the case with the upcoming July 3 release of the first film in the Spider-Man franchise reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man" and could be the case with Batman after the July 20 release of the final film in the Dark Knight franchise, "The Dark Knight Rises?"

One reason: comic book movies consistently make money -- a lot of it -- says Amanda Berry, an assistant professor of literature at American University whose research includes comic books and graphic novels as well as British literature and contemporary literary criticism and theory.

"During the last 5 years, Hollywood studios have released 21 films adapted from comic books," said Berry, who will teach the course "Narrative and the Comic Book" at American University this summer. "While all but four of the 21 films generated a profit, the amount of money made by extremely successful comic book movies vastly outweighs the small losses by a margin of 8:1."

"Fanboys" Help Drive Films' Popularity, Profitability

Berry also believes the comic book fan base -- one that does not claim an especially large number of people but boasts a super power of its own -- helps drive the popularity and hence, the profitability.

"Comic books have generated -- and continue to generate -- a unique fan base," said Berry, who is also a "fanboy" (slang for "comic book fan"). "This fan base is intensely loyal and seriously engaged in the very particularizing serial culture of comic books."

In fact, comic book fans are so invested in comic books that they consider themselves participants in comic book creation. This is a feature of many comic book fans' self-construction as readers and collectors, and, to some degree, it is also true, says Berry.

"The comic book industry, especially Marvel -- the company that brought us Spiderman, The X-Men, and The Avengers among others -- began in the 1960's to solicit input from readers in the form of fan letters and queries included at the end of comic books," said Berry.

These fan letters are not merely notes of praise or complaint, but often comprise fascinating and complex acts of critical reading, noting problems of continuity or "'realism" in a series; suggesting "better" plot variations; and giving extensive readers' reports on particular issues like large and small plot arcs, character development, visual renderings, and writing style.

Mainstream comic books, like soap operas, are a serial venture that can require studious attention to detail and to an ever-accumulating archive. Superman, for example, has been fighting crime since 1938 in a serial comic book that is still published weekly, as well as in various spin-off and crossover comic books.

"Comic books can be read as single issues of course, but the serious fan understands that each single issue also relies on years and years of accumulated textual history," Berry said.

What may be most remarkable about the disposition of the serious and long-term comic book reader is the sheer pleasure he or she takes in an enormous and mostly impossible project of reading and thinking about an absurdly huge and constantly expanding archive of material. It is this devotion to the material that allows the comic book fan base to inspire interest and anticipation for comic book films among other audiences.

"Simply speaking, these fans are uniquely capable of generating excitement about comic book films among themselves and others because their own investment in the world of the comic book is so intense," Berry said. "What may seem like escapism to an outsider is a deeply pleasurable opportunity for endless learning and study for the 'fanboy.'"

Other Possible Popularity Causes Are Questionable

There has been a great deal of speculation about other possible reasons for the relatively recent surge in comic book films, but Berry says there is no way to tell if any of those reasons are valid.

"Right now, there is no reliable way to know what, if anything, the market success of comic book plots and atmospheres tells us beyond their ability to generate profit," said Berry.

One of these theories is that filmgoers are seeking escape from real life hardships such as the current economy. But this interpretation is complicated by the films' inclusion of relevant and troubling social issues such as home foreclosures, every day acts of crime and violence, drug abuse, sexism, the death of loved ones, and poverty.

Other possible explanations for the popularity of comic book movies are: the basic appeal and comfort to audiences of a good versus evil plot with good emerging victorious; the draw of high tech, visually-dazzling special effects; audience identification with an everyman who has a secret, alternative identity as an unerring, popular savior; or even that people wish that they, too, could fly, lift buildings, and possess other super human powers.

Batman: A Dark Knight, Indeed

Since childhood, Berry has been a Batman fanboy, citing the Caped Crusader's dark outlook as his defining trait.

"Batman, to my mind, is an isolated depressive -- moody, pessimistic, angry, and often frustrated. This quality defines his very interesting relationship to his own crime-fighting, which tends to be less optimistic -- and thus more realistic -- than, for example, Superman's chant of defending America without reservation and in every case," Berry said. "Superman fans would fight me on this."

The Bachelorette Recap: June 18, 2012, From Tv Food and Drink ...

8:01 ? ?Homespun? Emily Maynard arrives to this week?s romantic?Bachelorette?overseas destination ? Croatia. ?Says Emily, ?This is awesome!?

8:02 ? The eight remaining bachelors arrive in Croatia. ?Say the bachelors, ?This is awesome!?

8:03 ? Little Ricki has been left back in North Carolina. ?Say the viewers, ?This is awesome!?

8:04 ? The first date card goes to Travis from Mississippi. ?Travis hopes Emily will be willing to give him a shot at romance even though he says ?Muhself? instead of ?Myself,? ?Picture Box? instead of ?Television,? and ?Pig Pickin?? instead of ?Dinner.?

8:05 ? Travis and Emily stroll through the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia while giggling and nibbling on ice cream cones.? Will this be the week we get our annual moment with the impoverished, local ?Wise Old Sage? who gives useful romance advice such as, ?If she loves the dog, don?t cook it for dinner? and ?After seventeen kids, stop sleeping with your man and move into the poopoo hut.??

8:07 ? Emily and Travis come across the ?Balancing Stone.? ?According to Emily, legend has it that if you can stay on the ?Balancing Stone? while removing your shirt then you?ll be lucky at love.? ?My research indicates that only the first requirement of this legend was in existence before the producers of The Bachelorette came to town.

8:09 ? Travis and Emily square dance in an alley.? This is the cheapest fucking date ever.

8:10 ? Back at the hotel, Parallelogram Head Ryan claims that there?s an ?edge? to him that Travis doesn?t have.? Apparently, this edge has something to do with wearing the same kind of three-sizes-too-small tank top that pervy priests like to put on before inviting young boys from the congregation over to garden with them in the mid-day sun.

8:16 ? Travis gives Emily a look that says, ?You could be mine forever.? ?Emily gives Travis a loose, uncomfortable hug that says, ?I wish you were out so I could introduce you to my best friend, Matt!?

8:19 ? Rose denied. ?A lonely, heartbroken Travis roams the late-night streets of Croatia. ?And to boot, it?s raining! ?Or maybe it?s just a few production assistants flicking water from the Mediterranean Sea into his face. ?You can never be sure on The Bachelorette.

8:23 ? Emily meets the guys for the group date, which includes all the remaining men except Parallelogram Head Ryan whose tank top is preventing him from lifting his arms up high enough to reach the doorknob.

8:24 ? Emily announces she?s taking the guys to see the new Disney-Pixar movie, Brave, then reveals they?re all going to re-create a bit of Scotland as they compete in their own Highland Games.

8:31 ? I love a muscular guy with a big donkey between his legs, don?t you?

8:34 ? First event ? ARCHERY!

8:35 ? All the guys hit the target except Chris. ?Says Chris, ?If I had some more chances I?m sure I would have hit it.?

8:36 ? Second event ? LOG TOSS ? Chris fails at getting his log to roll over all the way and is disqualified. ?Says Chris, ?If I?d had more time to practice, I would have been a lot better.?

8:39 ? Third event ? I?m not sure exactly how to describe this one. ?It?s the same kind of activity you start to notice happening between two guys at work who used to hate each other until one day they both found out the other was gay.

8:41 ? After all three events, says Chris: ?I gave it my all and I ended up last!? ?If Chris doesn?t end up with Homespun, he should definitely consider hooking up with Linkie from this season?s?Food Network Star.

8:42 ? Despite ending up last, Emily awards the BRAVE cup to Chris, reminding me of that episode of The Brady Bunch where Bobby couldn?t win a trophy no matter what he did ? including going on Cartoon King?s televised ice cream eating contest ? so the rest of the family gave him a trophy just for being a good brother, but he still ended up looking like a giant derp.

8:43 ? Chris continues to crow about his trophy with the wide-eyed excitement of that kid from your fourth grade class who won a certificate for ?Best Attendance.?

8:47- Preparing for his date with Homespun, Ryan says he wakes up every day, looks at himself in the mirror and asks, ?Who do you want to be today?? ?If I woke up looking at Ryan every day, the only thing I?d ask is, ?Dude, did you get a free Friendster profile with that haircut??

8:48 ? Jef with One F decides the only way to win Emily?s heart is to do his best impression of a girl baring her emotions in a fan letter to Jonathan Taylor Thomas: ??I feel like, I can like open up with you more now, you know? ? Like I feel like? you give me the type of feeling like people write novels about??

8:49 ? ??like, I get really excited to hang out with you. ?I really like it. ?I really like you. ?I don?t know, I feel like, there could be like something really good with us, like you know, that?s what I feel??

8:51 ? ?? but yeah like, I don?t want you to be, like, guessing too much. ?I mean I?m definitely here for you, like, I want this to work out.?

8:52 ? After six weeks of stalling and enough ?likes? to crash Facebook for half of July, Jef with One F finally finally seals the deal!

8:57 ? The guys get together and bash on Ryan. ??Kind of a jackass,? ??Takes him three hours to get ready,? ?Shaves his legs and plucks his finger hairs.? ?He?s such an idiot? ?I hope I never have to see him again.?

9:09 ? ?During dinner with Homespun, says Ryan: ?I couldn?t sleep the other night so I sat up and I wrote twelve things that I really wanted to find in a woman. ?I like to write. ?I?m fired up!?

By the time Ryan gets to item four, Emily?s face is the exact same one Bachelorette Ashley Hebert gave her season?s Ryan when he started in on his endless fascination with solar panels and water heaters.

9:11 ? Emily points out that ?loving family? was nowhere on Ryan?s list and denies him the rose, about four weeks too late by my calculation.

9:12 ? Ryan begins an earnest campaign to change Homespun?s mind about sending him home, which consists primarily of refusing to leave the table, staring at her with his dead doll eyes and repeating, ?This is shocking? and ?I can?t help but thinking you?re making the wrong choice.?

9:13 ? Ryan?s campaigning is beginning to deteriorate into full-out begging. ?The show goes to commercial.

9:15 ? OOH Wipeout is coming back!

9:17 ? We?re back. ?Ryan is still begging. ?Anyone want anything from Quizno?s?

9:20 ? Now I get why we got to Ryan?s date so early in the episode.

9:23 ? My sister to me, ?Did Ryan just say he was?worldly?? ?Me: ?I thought he said he was?wormy.?

9:25 ? Finally, Ryan?s run through all of the material he learned from that three-hour internet course on sales training and sulks away, turquoise shoes and all!

9:52 ? Awarded roses this week: Insurance Agent Sean, Jef with One F, Race Car Arie, Highland-Loser Chris, John the Wolf and Doug the Hugger. ?Yep, that means NO ONE got eliminated at the Rose Ceremony, which is sort of the entire reason we sit through the previous one hour and fifty-two minutes of these shallow-end gene pool shenanigans, isn?t it? ?Though it wasn?t my fault, I?ve decided to make up for this injustice to all of you. ? So let?s stroll down Memory Lane and remember some of the Bachelors who got the heave-ho at Rose Ceremonies earlier this season. ?If you have a slow song by Enya on your iTunes, start it now.

We remember?

?Looks Like My Ex? Aaron: ?She made the decision. She?s missing out.? (Sidebar: I had those exact same glasses in high school, and I?m nearly certain they?re the reason I won the science fair).
Kyle the Financial Advisor: ?I totally should have opened up more. Now I?m going home.?

Brent the Technology Salesman, who, when asked about finding love, replied..??at my age? with six kids? not a high probability.?

Jean-Paul the Marine Biologist :??It felt like my heart fell on the floor and got trampled.?

And finally? this fellow. ?He wasn?t actually a competitor on the show. He was just a kid who delivered a pizza one week and decided to hang out until someone noticed him.

That?s all for Croatia. ?Next week we?re off to Prague, where John the Wolf finally lands a one-on-one. ?We?ll see if he can make up for those creepy red Willy Wonka pants he wore back in London. Follow him @jwolfner and tell him I sent you. He got mad at me for making fun of his pants last week.
