Mayer also launched weekly all-hands meetings and she is reportedly planning to re-do the office layout to make it more collaborative.
This probably won't be enough to turn around the company, but it already seems to be helping morale. Yahoo's employees are apparently "thrilled" by the free lunches.

According to a study published on line last week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, not only are men with prostate cancer more likely to die from other conditions, the risk that they will die of prostate cancer (as opposed to other conditions) has been decreasing significantly over time.
The study by Epstein et al. is based on data from > 700,000 men identified in the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) and in the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death databases. According to the lead researcher (as quoted in an article on the HealthDay web site): ?Our study is the first to analyze specific causes of death among men with prostate cancer.?
The databases allowed the research team to look at causes of deaths from 1973 through 2008 for 490,341 men in the USA and from 1961 through 2008 for 210,212 men in Sweden.
The authors were then able to estimate the cumulative incidence of death from seven selected causes accounting for > 80 percent of the reported deaths and also to analyze mortality trends by calendar year and age at diagnosis and length of follow-up.
There primary results are reported as follows:
- Among all the men in the two databases
- 52 percent of the men in Sweden died during the 47-year study period.
- 30 percent of men in the USA died during the 35-year study period.
- Among men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the two databases
- 35 percent of Swedish men died from this disease during the study period.
- 16 percent of American men died from this disease during the study period.
- The cumulative incidence of prostate cancer-specific death declined during follow-up in both populations.
- The cumulative incidences of death from ischemic heart disease and from cancers other than prostate cancer remained constant.
- During the last 5 years of the study period (i.e., from 2003 to 2008),
- The 5-year cumulative incidence of death from prostate cancer was 29 percent in Sweden.
- The 5-year cumulative incidence of death from prostate cancer was 11 percent in the USA.
It is also noted that most of the men who died from prostate cancer during the two study periods were men diagnosed when they were older or were diagnosed before the widespread use of the PSA test.
Dr. Epstein is further quoted as stating:
We hope the study will have an impact on the clinical management of men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

We hope it will encourage physicians to use the diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage men to modify lifestyle factors, like losing weight, increasing physical activity and stopping smoking. We believe that adopting a healthier lifestyle may reduce a man?s risk of other chronic medical conditions that ultimately account for more deaths among men with prostate cancer than the disease itself.
The report on the HealthDay web site also offers statements from Dr. Durado Brooks of the American Cancer Society and from Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in New York, with regard to the implications of these data on the need for appropriate use of the PSA test (as opposed to mass, population-based screening). According to Kavoussi:

The program is intended to handle any non-emergency situations like filing complaints, updating information on a police report, and answering citizens' questions. Citizen callers can access the program through the department's website and will speak to personnel who have been assigned to modified duty due to injuries or other reasons. During the pilot, the service will be available Monday through Thursday during normal business hours. But if community interest is high, then the department will likely expand the program to the evening hours and on weekends. Users aren't required to have their own computer camera on, the chats are not recorded and the police cannot trace the call, according to PoliceOne.com.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Banks in Myanmar are hoping to begin handling international credit card transactions by next year.
Than Lwin, deputy chairman of the prominent Kanbawza Bank, said Sunday that negotiations are under way with Visa on the use of its cards.
Foreign visitors have been unable to use credit cards because of U.S. and EU restrictions on money transactions since 2003. The reports at the time of the accident say they do not believe that alcohol was a factor, but that was before an autopsy was released. ?She was only at the party for about 30 minutes when this accident occurred. ?Her parents are suing the hotel and both party planners. ?The problem is that she wasn't even in the party when her accident happened. ?She is outside of the ballroom it was being held in. ?Her parents say they didn't do enough to provide for proper security for the attendees of the party and by having an open bar with the price of the ticket they were irresponsible.
So the people who bought these tickets don't need to show any restraint whatsoever? ?Since the ability to drink to excess is there, it is someone else's fault if someone decides to do that. ?I have been to many a wedding where there was an open bar and didn't get drunk. ?It is called self-control.
According to this lawsuit not only should they have been policing how much people drink they also should be putting guards around the staircase in case anyone gets the idea to slide down it.
Luckily for these parents I won't be sitting on this jury since I don't live in Chicago, but they would get not one dime from me. ?They have my deepest sympathies for the beautiful daughter they lost, but that doesn't mean they deserve to paid for it. ?There is such a thing as personal responsibility, and sadly, this young woman didn't show any. ?She made a stupid choice and it cost her life. ?Tragic, but not worthy of a settlement. ?When this case is lost, they should be forced to pay for the legal bills of the other parties. ?That will reduce the amount of frivolous lawsuits in a hurry.

Specifically, the study was a systematic review of all studies published from 1970 to 2011 that linked television with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature death, among them large prospective studies involving eight U.S. , Europe and Australia.
The results showed that more than two hours of television a day are sufficient to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and more than three hours a day to detect an increased risk of dying prematurely.
Also, two hours per day watching TV per day the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature death increased by 20, 15 and 13% respectively.

As the authors note, heavy television viewing has always been associated with obesity, poor eating habits and a low level of activity, major risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
However, in this meta-analysis did not analyze the diet and physical activity participants, nor the most watched type of program, to develop a more accurate profile of these viewers, so we propose that in future studies to define these parameters.

Spy chief asks hackers to help government secure Internet
LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - The head of the government's secretive National Security Agency took the unprecedented step on Friday of asking a convention of unruly hackers to join him in an effort to make the Internet more secure.
In a speech to the 20th annual Def Con gathering in Las Vegas, four-star General Keith Alexander stressed common ground between U.S. officials and hackers, telling them privacy must be preserved and that they could help by developing new tools.
"You're going to have to come in and help us," Alexander told thousands of attendees.
Alexander rarely gives speeches of any kind, let alone to a crowd of hackers, professional defenders, and researchers whose discoveries of software and hardware vulnerabilities are used by both sides.
Conference founder Jeff Moss, known in hacking circles as The Dark Tangent, told the conference that he had invited Alexander partly because he wanted them to learn about one of the world's "spookiest, least known" organizations.
Attendees were respectful and gave modest applause, though several said they were concerned about secret government snooping and the failure of authorities thus far to stop foreign-backed attacks.
"Americans pay taxes so that federal agencies can defend them," said a researcher who asked not to be named. "I see it as a hard sell asking a business entity to spend money for the common good."
Alexander won points by wearing the hacker "uniform" of jeans and a tee shirt, wandering the halls and praising specific hacking efforts, including intrusion detection tools and advances in cryptology.
He also confronted civil liberties concerns that are a major issue for many researchers devoted to the Internet.
The NSA sponsored a booth at the convention for the first time, which organizers placed next to one from the Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF). The EFF has sued the government, claiming that it illegally tapped conversations of Americans.
Alexander spoke with staff at the EFF booth, telling them he believes the U.S. government can secure the nation and also protect civil liberties. They did not discuss the pending litigation.
Panels at the conference include a discussion of government tracking of individuals through cell phone data.
Taking questions screened by Moss, Alexander adamantly denied that the NSA has dossiers on millions of Americans, as some former employees have suggested.
"The people who would say we are doing that should know better," he said. "That is absolute nonsense."
Alexander used the speech to lobby for a cyber security bill moving through the Senate that would make it easier for companies under attack to share information with the government and each other as well as give critical infrastructure owners some reward for adhering to future security standards.
"Both parties see this as a significant problem," he said, adding that the experts like those at Def Con should help in the process. "What are the standards that we should jointly set that critical networks should have?"
In addition to conducting electronic intelligence gathering, primarily overseas, the Defense Department-controlled NSA is charged with protecting the U.S. military from cyber attacks.
Increasingly, it has been sharing its findings with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to aid in criminal cases and with the Department of Homeland Security, which warns specific industries of new threats.
Displaying a slide with the logos of several dozen of companies breached by criminals or spies in the past two years, Alexander said that only the most competent even knew they had been hacked.
"There are 10 times, almost 100 times more companies that don't know they've been hacked," he said.
As he walked the convention floor, he repeatedly asked hackers, including children attending a "Def Con Kids" conference, to consider joining the NSA once they have honed their skills.
"Keep working on this. We need you in the future," he said.
Many of the more than 10,000 hackers who crowded into the Rio casino conference center did not seem particularly interested in the presence of the head of the biggest U.S. spy agency, who was flanked by an entourage of plain-clothes guards and Def Con's own red-shirted security force who call themselves "goons".
"Nice to meet you," he said to several dozen hackers in line to buy lock picking equipment at one crowded booth. "How can I help you?"
The crowd did not respond, and the booth's organizers politely chatted with Alexander.
When he approached a hacker preparing for a "capture the flag" computer-takeover contest, the hacker waved casually, then returned to his laptop. A teammate later explained: "We were just too busy to chat."

The FBI recovered a package that apparently was mailed by James Eagan Holmes after the shooting suspect told?investigators?to look for the item on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, a senior law enforcement official told NBC News on Wednesday.
The source?told NBC that the package contained writings about killing people, but could not go into more detail.
Holmes, a 24-year-old who was in the process of withdrawing from a graduate program in neuroscience at the university, has been arrested in connection with the?killing of 12 and the injuring of 58 in a shooting spree at the midnight premier of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo. on Friday.
Police recovered the package on Monday after getting a search warrant for the medical center mail room and then getting a second warrant to actually open the package, the law enforcement source said.

Police found the package as?Holmes?described it, including his name in the return address, and it's now being analyzed, the source said.
It was unclear how long the package had been in the mail room before its discovery.?
In response to reporters' queries about the package, the Anschutz Medical Campus issued a statement saying it could not comment on anything regarding the ongoing criminal investigation into the theater shooting, under order of Arapahoe County District Judget William Sylvester.
The statement did provide general information about how mail is handled on campus.
"The University centrally receives mail from the United States Postal Service. The University then delivers the mail to the address on the Anschutz Medical Campus the same day it is received," the statement said. "The University's mail service is not open on Saturday. Saturday mail is sorted and delivered Monday morning. The University does not log or track mail/packages unless it requires a signature from the United States Postal Service."
Holmes made his first court appearance before the court in Arapahoe on Monday, amid?grieving for the victims.
Wearing a red prison jumpsuit, Holmes?appeared with public defender Tamara Brady for the hearing. Holmes,?who said nothing during the proceedings,?had several days' beard growth and bright red dyed hair. He looked down or off into the distance, at times raising his eyebrows in a quizzical expression or frowning as if concentrating.

A hearing of formal charges, expected to be multiple counts of first-degree murder, is set for next Monday. Then the state must decide whether to seek the death penalty.
Holmes had been stockpiling ammunition, weapons,?body armor and explosives for months, said authorities who tracked his purchases. After his arrest, teams of experts worked for two days?to disarm Holmes' apartment, which contained an elaborate web of explosive and incendiary devices set to be triggered by tripwires.

For too many veterans, the ultimate defeat
CHAMPION, Ohio?? On a warm summer afternoon in Champion, Ohio, Michael Ecker, a 25-year-old Iraq war veteran, called out to his father from a leafy spot in their backyard. Then, as the two stood steps apart, Michael saluted, raised a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.
"His eyes rolled back," his father, Matt, said softly as he recounted the 2009 suicide. "There was just nothing I could do."

Weeks before he killed himself, Michael received a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs accusing him of "over-reporting" the extent of his psychiatric problems. It was the culmination of a long struggle that Ecker, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury related to his service, had waged since returning home from the war to try to hold down a steady job, obtain VA disability benefits and resume a life as close to normal as possible.
"I've often thought about finding that doctor and saying, ?Over-reporting?!' and giving him the death certificate," Matt Ecker said.
About once every half hour in America, a veteran within the VA healthcare system tries to commit suicide, according to VA figures for fiscal year 2011.
President Barack Obama singled out suicide prevention as a priority when he talked about veterans issues on the campaign trail in 2008. He once cited the case of an 89-year-old World War II veteran who took his life the day after complaining about his treatment by the VA.
"It is an outrage. It is a betrayal of the ideals that we ask our troops to risk their lives for," Obama told an audience in Charleston, West Virginia, on May 12, 2008. He reiterated those sentiments at a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Reno, Nevada, on Monday, saying he had told Pentagon chiefs and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, "We've got to do better. ? This has to be all hands on deck."
In the nearly three years since Ecker's death, the Obama administration has expanded efforts to tackle suicide among veterans, some of which were initiated at the end of the Bush administration. It has hired more suicide prevention staff and enhanced tracking of high-risk patients. Other benefits meant to help veterans returning from war have been expanded, particularly educational benefits under the 2008 GI Bill.
Perhaps the most lauded part of the VA's ramped-up effort to combat suicide has been a hotline that has received more than half a million calls since it was created in 2007, including more than 20,000 rescues of suicidal veterans. More recently it launched an online chat service and text messaging.
The VA has sought to improve data collection, too, and the numbers appear troubling: In 2011 there were 17,754 suicide attempts ? about 48 a day ? up from 10,888 in 2009.

That increase, the VA said, may largely reflect an improved tracking system put into place in 2010 and a growing number of patients treated at VA facilities. The VA couldn't provide data on the number of suicides within the VA system after 2009, but the figures through that date show a broadly stable rate since 2003 that is higher than the national average.
Outside the VA healthcare system, which has almost 9 million enrollees, the data becomes murky. The VA has estimated that roughly 18 veterans nationwide kill themselves every day, but that number is based on limited data.
Reuters conducted its own survey, contacting all 50 states but obtaining data for the 2005-to-2010 period from only 32 of them, accounting for about two-thirds of the U.S. veteran population. In those states, veteran suicides increased from 4,801 to 5,017 over a five-year period in which, the VA believes, the U.S. veteran population declined slightly.
While the data is imperfect ? the VA estimates the reliability of such figures at 78 percent to 90 percent ? the department said the numbers appeared broadly consistent with trends it has observed.
Shinseki told Reuters in an interview that the problem of veteran suicide appeared to be linked to a broader question about mental health in the United States. He pointed to data showing suicide is the second-biggest cause of death for people ages 25 to 34 and the fourth-biggest cause for people 35 to 54.
"We got a problem. Is mental health an issue in this country? Nobody talks about it," Shinseki said.
A copy of the July 29, 2009, VA letter to Ecker reviewed by Reuters denied him an increase in his disability benefits from the $974 he was already receiving, citing "over-reporting (of) both mood disturbance and impaired memory difficulty."
"Mr. Ecker's death is a tragic outcome. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones," the VA said in response to Reuters inquiries. "Experience has shown that access to quality mental health services from VA can make a positive difference in the lives of veterans and their families."
Matt Ecker wonders daily whether his son's suicide could have been prevented had he received better treatment or found a job he could keep in his condition. Frustrated with the system, his son had declined treatment from the VA and had turned to a local doctor. He also wonders whether Michael might have done better if he had re-enlist. Going to war was risky. But, in Michael's case, so was coming home.
"It's just as dangerous, as it turns out, out here ? because of the lack of jobs, lack of everything," he said.

Beware of These Hidden Causes of Acne
All of a sudden, you have a zit to zap. A pimple to pop. How, you wonder, did it get there? What went so wrong that your once flawless skin is covered with a red spot or two or three? Blame your yoga mat. Or your cell phone. Or even that pretty new shade of eyeliner you've been wearing. "Acne is a complex medical condition caused by four factors: hormones, inflammation, bacteria, and dead skin cells that clog pores," says dermatologist Jessica Krant, founder of the Art of Dermatology practice in New York. Triggers include "stress, poor sleep, and dietary choices. For some people, chocolate really does cause breakouts; for others, it's greasy foods, or a diet heavy in dairy."
And that's just the beginning of the list. Be alert to these often-sneaky causes of acne:
Makeup. Acne cosmetica, or pimples caused by topical creams, lotions, and makeup, is most common on the face, neck, hairline, and scalp. Products that contain mineral oil clog pores, so switch to brands labeled non-comedogenic, which are oil-free, don't strip skin of necessary moisture and nutrients, and don't block pores. And since makeup brushes collect bacteria and yeast, clean them once a week with soap and water. Washing that foundation and powder off every night is important, too, says Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist based in New York. She recommends using exfoliating wipes and pads, which are gentle but remove more dead skin than plain-old soap does.

Cell phones. Your iPhone or Android is a cesspool of dirt and bacteria, and there's a good chance it'll trigger breakouts on your chin and around your mouth. Wipe it down daily with alcohol or Clorox wipes to keep it clean.
Medication. Check your medicine cabinet and tread particularly carefully with prescriptions that emphasize steroids, such as prednisone, cortisone, and hydrocortisone. These can both aggravate and cause acne. Also watch out for lithium, lithium chloride, and certain forms of iodine. "Unfortunately, many of these medications are given for serious conditions, and there are few available substitutes," Krant says. "So people can get stuck in troubling situations, having to take important medication that causes distressing side effects." Keep an open line of communication with your doctor, and make sure he's aware of your concerns.
Yoga mats. Go to class, grab a mat ... and consider all those who have come before you. "You're using a mat other people have been on, and who knows whether they had their feet where your head is," Fusco says. Soon, you'll be dripping with sweat and oil, and rubbing your face against the bacteria on the mat. "That provides a fertile environment for breaking out." The solution? Place a clean towel on the end of the mat where your head and face will be, even if you're using your own personal yoga mat.
Touching your face. Beware of contact acne: "It can appear anywhere you apply repeated or extended pressure on your skin," says dermatologist Ava Shamban, author of Heal Your Skin. "Resting your chin on your hand while you work, pressing your cell phone on your chin, or wearing tight clothing can all contribute to acne." She recommends trying not to touch your face, switching to a headset, and opting for a ponytail holder instead of a headband. And during the summertime, don't sit down in a wet bathing suit: Doing so puts you at risk of developing butt acne.

Dandruff. Dead skin blizzard? Not fun, for plenty of reasons. And it doesn't help that dandruff often causes acne, typically in the form of tiny pimples lining the scalp. Using shampoo designed to treat dandruff is helpful, Fusco says. "A lot of people don't like to because of its medicinal nature and smell," she says. "But there are new lines that smell nice and can be used every day." Fusco recommends, for example, Clear Scalp and Hair Beauty Therapy products.
Sunscreen. Yes, you need it when you venture into the sun. But make sure it's oil-free and non-comedogenic. Avoid sunscreen with perfume or dyes, and steer clear of spray-on formulas; many of these contain alcohol, which may irritate sensitive skin, Shamban says. Products made with zinc oxide are often more tolerable than those with titanium dioxide.
Traveling. Changes in environment--humidity, weather, and even minerals or fluoride in water--can trigger breakouts. There's nothing you can do about the heat index, of course. But wash your face with bottled water when you can, and avoid using hotel soaps.
Stress. It triggers heightened levels of androgens, hormones that contribute to adulthood breakouts. Stress also releases cortisol and other adrenal steroids that can stimulate the sebaceous glands and lead to acne flare-ups, Shamban says. Though it doesn't always cause new cases of acne, stress tends to worsen matters in those already struggling with the condition. Make sure to get enough sleep, and allot 15 minutes each day to relaxing or doing something you enjoy. Squeeze in some exercise, too, since research suggests it helps deflate stress.

Hair-styling products. It's called pomade acne: Breakouts caused by hair gel or any other styling staple. These cause oil to seep onto your forehead, trapping acne-causing bacteria in your pores. Apply products with your hands, keeping them away from the hairline, and wipe your skin with facial cleanser to remove any remaining traces. Be wary of bangs, too, since they bring hair products directly against your forehead.
Chin straps. Bikers and athletes who wear helmets are prone to this type of acne, caused when straps rub against the skin. "Wash your face before and after putting it on, and keep the strap clean," Fusco says. She also recommends using an antibacterial pad to wipe straps down before and after use.
Anti-aging creams. Think you're doing your skin a favor? Think again. Many of these contain retinol, which stimulates cell turnover, increasing the number of acne-like lesions. "Too much turnover can cause a traffic jam in the skin layers," Krant says. Though Retin-A, which contains retinol, is sometimes prescribed to treat acne, experts warn that many people find it to be a skin irritant; plus, anti-aging creams tend to be oily. "Always use these sparingly, and ideally, under a dermatologist's instruction."

Today the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the Marketplace Equity Act (HR 3179), a bill that would broaden state power to require Internet retailers to collect sales tax. ?
In his statement on the hearing, Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith gave an overview of the following key factors involved in taxing online sales.
- In 1992 the Supreme Court ruled, in?Quill Corp v. North Dakota, that a state may not force a retailer to collect and remit state sales and use tax, unless the retailer has a physical presence in the state. According to Smith, this ? . . . makes sense for small businesses who cannot afford to track and comply with 9,000 different tax codes as a cost of doing business throughout the country.?
- However, brick-and-mortar retailers argue that this ruling creates inequity between them and their online counterparts. Furthermore, states and localities maintain that consumer use tax, owed by those who shop online, is ?. . . easily avoided, rarely paid and difficult to enforce.?
- Smith concludes: ?The Constitution does not require a physical presence standard as a tax collection criterion. Congress may pass legislation that uses a different standard [than Quill] under its power to regulate interstate commerce.?
There are two other proposed bills that would grant states the right, under certain conditions, to require online retailers without a physical presence in the state to collect and remit state sales tax:

Caryn James: Movie Review: The Fabulist Ruby Sparks
Neurosis hasn't seemed this adorably sane since Woody Allen. Clever, funny, expertly walking the line between arty and mainstream, Ruby Sparks is a lovable romantic comedy, with Paul Dano as a novelist who writes a dream girl, and Zoe Kazan -- Dano's real-life partner, who wrote the screenplay -- as the fictional woman who fantastically comes to life, leaving her underwear around his apartment, cooking him eggs.
The film begins with an audacious visual image: a woman we don't yet know is Ruby, dramatically backlit against a bright-yellow sky, walks toward us on screen. When we see that the scene is Calvin's dream, the jolt is so trite it seems like a warning, but turns out to be the film's only let-down. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are the ideal directors for this wispy story. As they did in the more madcap Little Miss Sunshine, they confidently make eccentricity seem endearing when it could so easily have been annoying.
Everyone plays this fantasy without a wink at the audience, but it is Dano (There Will Be Blood) who straightforwardly engages us and holds our attention. Kazan (terrific on stage in The Seagull and on screen in Revolutionary Road) has written what feels like a gift for her boyfriend. Calvin is a blocked writer and an immature guy, but he's not foolish enough to believe in magic, at least not initially. "It's like that movie Harvey, except she's not a giant rabbit," he says, doubting his own sanity, when trying to explain Ruby's appearance to his brother (Chris Messina, solid as ever). Part of Calvin's quirky, endearing character is that he is an anachronism, who uses a typewriter rather than a computer (a magical typewriter?) and has an odd kind of literary celebrity -- a first novel published at 19 that made him famous -- that today happens on screen much more than in life. Everything is just slightly off-kilter.
Kazan's screenplay smartly creates a realistic underpinning, though. The film's central question isn't "Is Ruby real?" but the even trickier follow up: how much will Calvin control her? One little typed phrase, and she's suddenly speaking French, but is total control what he wants? And Ruby increasingly seems to have a will of her own. She wants to be a painter; she wants some space; she knows nothing of her magical-realist origins.
