Ex-NBA Player Stephon Marbury?s Wife to Star on ?Basketball Wives?

Another former NBA baller's wife joins the cast

From TMZ

Can VH1?s popular show ?Basketball Wives? get any crazier?

Well if Stephon Marbury?s wife, Tasha Marbury, is in any way like the ex-NBA baller, we have another controversial addition to the show.

Producers of the show told VH1 they have tried to get Tasha on the show numerous times before. They said they feel she is a perfect fit because she?s friends with some of the other wives, and is an actual basketball wife at the moment.

Marbury hasn?t played in the NBA for three years now and is currently playing in China.

9 climbers killed, 6 missing in Nepal avalanche

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? An avalanche hit climbers on a high Himalayan peak in Nepal on Sunday, leaving at least nine dead and six others missing, officials said. Many of the climbers were French or German.

Police official Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said the bodies of a Nepalese guide and a German man were recovered and that rescue pilots had spotted seven other bodies on the slopes of Mount Manaslu in northern Nepal, the eighth highest mountain in the world.

In Madrid, Spain's Foreign Ministry said one of those killed was Spanish, but did not release the person's identity.

The identities of the other victims were still being confirmed.

Ten other climbers survived the avalanche but many were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters, Kuwar said.

Rescue pilot Pasang, who uses only one name, said three injured French citizens and two Germans had been transported to hospitals in Katmandu.

He said rescuers were also attempting to bring the bodies of the dead back to the base camp.

Weather conditions were deteriorating and it was not possible to continue air searches of the mountain Sunday afternoon, Kuwar said.

The avalanche hit the climbers at a camp at 7,000 meters (22,960 feet) early in the morning as they were preparing to head toward the summit, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high.

There were Italian, German and French teams on the mountain, with a total of 231 climbers and guides, but not all were at the higher camps, officials said.

It is currently the beginning of Nepal's autumn mountaineering season. The autumn season comes right after the end of the monsoon rains, which make weather conditions unpredictable, and is not as popular among mountaineers as the spring season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the high Himalayan peaks.

Officials were investigating the cause of Sunday's avalanche.

Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have complained in recent years that climbing conditions have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased.

Veteran mountain guide Apa, who has climbed Mount Everest a record 21 times, traveled for months across Nepal earlier this year campaigning about the effects of global warming on the mountain peaks.

He told The Associated Press the mountains now have considerably less ice and snow, making it harder for climbers to use ice axes and crampons on their boots to get a grip on the slopes.

Loose snow also increases the risk of avalanches.

Bill Amos, of Portland, Oregon, an avid mountaineer and ice climber who founded the mountaineering apparel company NW Alpine, said "it's super sad when our fellow climbers die." Amos said his initial thought when he heard about the deadly avalanche in Nepal was that the mountain was being overcrowded with climbers.

"That seems to be the same thing that's going on in Everest," he said. "All of that is overcrowding and these commercial expeditions trying to make money."

Amos added that people who venture into the mountains need to understand the risks and dangers associated with backcountry travel and be able to spot avalanche terrain and dangerous snowpack.

DENVER (CBS4) ? Everyone is invited to relax and breathe this Sunday by doing ?Yoga On The Steps? at Cheesman Park.

The event is a fundraiser to help survivors of breast cancer.

In May a similar event was held in Philadelphia. It was an inspiring yoga class designed for all skill levels and it raised money for Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a nonprofit that provides education to empower women affected by breast cancer.

Doctors in Colorado applaud the program.

?They are a living entity, a living repository of very important information for women who have to go through a breast cancer treatment and journey,? Dr. Virginia Borges with the University of Colorado Hospital said.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The hope is participants will raise $70,000 for Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

Diminishing Returns

An American soldier instructs member sof the Afghan National Army.

The latest news from Afghanistan only underscores what?s been clear for quite some time: that there is no light at the end of the tunnel in this war, no noble way out, not much point to staying in.

In the 11 years we?ve been fighting there, our official war aims have been ratcheted down to adjust for what?s possible, and now it seems even the minimal goals may have slipped out of reach.

At the start, President George W. Bush envisioned not only ousting the Taliban but transforming Afghanistan into a Western-style democracy. President Obama discarded that fantasy for the more practical objective of dismantling al-Qaida, degrading the Taliban, and training the Afghan army.

But Obama was also persuaded by his top advisers that the best way to do this would be through a counterinsurgency strategy. That would mean not only fighting the Taliban militarily but boosting the Afghan government politically: helping it provide basic services to the Afghan people, thus gaining their loyalty and undermining their support for the Taliban. In short, it would mean nation building.

That was the rationale for Obama?s decision, in December 2009, to deploy 33,000 more American troops, beyond the 68,000 already there (21,000 of whom he?d agreed to send six months earlier). Eighteen months later, in June 2011, he decided nation building wasn?t working and probably never would work, so he announced that all 33,000 of those extra troops would be pulled out?and not replaced with a new rotation?by the following summer. (The last of those troops left this week.) By good fortune, a month before this announcement, he?d ordered a team of SEALs to raid Osama bin Laden?s compound in Pakistan, severely weakening al-Qaida. Meanwhile, the Taliban were weakened on certain fronts as a fighting force, and the Afghan army was performing a bit better. So Obama was able to present his decision as the product of success. And it was a success, under his newly defined standard; but if all he?d ever meant to do was to kill bin Laden, slightly push back the Taliban, and push up the Afghan army, he wouldn?t have needed all those extra troops from the outset.

Now, though, even this measure of success seems unsustainable. Two big pieces of news this week tell the story. First, the U.S.-led coalition announced that it was sharply curtailing joint operations with Afghan army and police forces. Specifically, there will be no more joint patrols?or any other interaction?at the level of battalion or below (a U.S. battalion has 800troops, an Afghan one about 400) without the approval of a two-star general. (Since nearly all patrols are conducted by units smaller than a battalion, the edict applies, in effect, to nearly all patrols.)

The reason for this ban was obvious. There?s been an outbreak of ?green-on-blue? killings?Afghan soldiers murdering their American advisers. More than 50 coalition troops have been killed in this manner this year, about one-sixth the number of total fatalities. The problem isn?t just the deaths. It?s that training and joint patrolling require trust, and if the American trainers have to worry about not just the enemy they?re pursuing but the ?partners? they?re training, trust vanishes.

Sniping from within GOP adds to Romney's struggles

(AP) ? Mitt Romney struggled to steady his presidential campaign on Friday, buffeted by an outbreak of sniping by frustrated Republicans, fresh evidence of a slide in battleground state polls and President Barack Obama's accusation that he was writing off "half the country" in pursuit of the White House.

Republican running mate Paul Ryan drew boos at an AARP convention in New Orleans when he said Romney would repeal Obama's health care law, which closed a gap in coverage for seniors' prescription drugs. The Wisconsin congressman accused the administration of weakening Medicare and flinching from tough measures needed to stabilize Social Security's finances, adding that the president has "put his own job security over your retirement security."

Obama rebutted Ryan's charges point by point in a video appearance to the same audience. He said the Republican prescription for Medicare would mean "billions in new profits for insurance companies" and replacing guaranteed benefits with a voucher that would bring higher out of pocket costs for seniors.

Romney campaigned in Nevada as aides released a 2011 federal income tax return showing he and his wife, Ann, paid $1.94 million in federal taxes last year on income of $13.7 million. Their effective tax rate was 14.1 per cent, lower than many families pay because most of the couple's earnings come from investments.

The campaign also released a letter from Romney's doctor saying the 65-year-old former Massachusetts governor is healthy and physically up to the demands of the presidency.

Republicans tried to yank the campaign focus back to the economy.

"While President Obama and Democrats will try to distract voters, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are focused on fixing the economy, getting Americans back to work and ensuring a better future for our children and grandchildren," Sen. John McCain, the Republicans' 2008 presidential candidate, said in a statement.

But there seemed no letup in the bad political news for Romney, hit by a barrage of it since he was seen on videotape saying that his job as a candidate is not to worry about the 47 percent of Americans whom he said pay no income taxes and see themselves as victims.

Obama, for sure, was eager to keep the controversy alive. Campaigning in Woodbridge, Va., he defended himself against Romney's jabs in response to his own statement that change is impossible from the inside in Washington. "It can't happen if you write off half the nation before you even took office," he said.

According to Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Marist Poll surveys, the president has opened leads among likely voters of eight percentage points in Iowa, with 6 electoral votes, and margins of five percentage points each in Colorado (9 electoral votes) and Wisconsin (10.)

Earlier surveys published this week pointed to leads for Obama in both Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, and Ohio, with 18.

National polls have been far closer, including an AP-GfK survey this week that had it a statistical tie among likely voters. They have also suggested progress for Obama in terms of his handling of the economy, the No. 1 issue in the race.

Despite Romney's difficulties, recent soundings on employment have not been encouraging for the president's re-election. Newly released figures show joblessness ticked up in five swing states in August, fell in two and was unchanged in two others.

Romney's allies also point to a series of presidential debates beginning Oct. 3 as a chance to shake up the race.

But for now, Romney's troubles have sent shudders down ballot, where Republicans are in tough races that will settle the outcome for the struggle for control of the Senate this fall. Tommy Thompson, dropping in the polls in Wisconsin, said "the presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election."

That produced a quick retort from John Sununu, a top Romney surrogate. "My good friend Tommy Thompson sounds like Barack Obama, blaming it on somebody else," he said on CNN.

But Thompson wasn't alone. Rep. Rick Berg, running for the Senate in a closer-than-expected race in North Dakota, became the latest in a string of Republican candidates to say they disagreed with Romney's 47 percent remarks.

Apart from his self-inflicted political wounds, Romney has been under pressure from fellow Republicans to draw clearer distinctions with Obama on the economy, and say more clearly what he would do to bring down the nation's 8.1 percent unemployment rate.

Asked to point to new policy proposals that Romney has made since early August, aides referred to one speech on energy independence and a set of remarks on veterans.

But he has generally been unwilling to flesh out his plans for balancing the budget or enacting tax reform, refusing, for example, to name a tax break he would eliminate except for a small one that subsidizes producers of wind power.

He criticized Obama's handling of anti-American demonstrations around U.S. embassies in the Middle East earlier in the month, but declined to say what approach he would have taken instead. And while he has repeatedly tagged Obama for not being more forceful in trying to arrange the downfall of Syrian President Bashar Assad, aides have refused for nearly a month to say whether the Republican challenger supports arming rebels fighting the regime.

Ryan provided no new policy details in his appearance before the AARP, although he renewed Romney's support for a gradual increase in the Social Security retirement age and slowing the growth of benefits for those at higher incomes. Republicans have yet to provide details.

He told seniors that Republicans "respect you enough to level with you," and said Obama's health care legislation had cut $716 billion out of Medicare over a decade and set up a board of unelected bureaucrats with authority to make future reductions so severe they could eventually jeopardize seniors' access to medical care.

"You know President Obama's slogan, right? Forward." he said, then added, mockingly, "Forward into a future where seniors are denied the care they earned because a bureaucrat decided it wasn't worth the money."

Obama answered via video hookup and a television commercial that began airing in Florida, Colorado and Iowa. It argued that under the Republican plan, seniors' health costs could go up by $6,400 a year.

Obama has said he would consider raising payroll taxes on upper-income wage earners to shore up the trust fund that pays for Social Security benefits. Workers currently pay a 4.2 percent tax on income up to $110,100 annually, although the rate is scheduled to revert to a previous 6.2 percent at the first of the year.

Even though the atmosphere in lines around the world wasn't as exciting as?in past years?? in part thanks to sponsored human billboards and protesters?? the moment the clock chimed 8 a.m. at Apple Stores around the world, cheers erupted. The iPhone 5 has arrived.

The first person in line at Apple's flagship store in New York City is Hazem Sayed, the developer behind Vibe, an?app that lets its users broadcast anonymous messages to those nearby. He has spent well over a week sitting in front of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue and he does not regret a moment. "I'm as happy as I am tired," he tells reporters who crowd him as soon as he exists the store with his iPhone in hand.

When asked whether he even has the energy to use his new iPhone 5 after the long wait, Sayed smiles. "It's love at first sight," he says. "I'll stay up all night."

Love at first sight isn't eternal love though. Sayed does say he would consider selling his new gadget for twice what he paid, meaning about a thousand dollars total. "The receipt is longer than the phone," he remarks absentmindedly as he holds up a crumpled slip of paper next to the device.

Long after Sayed managed to escape the clutches of reporters, cheers continued?erupting?each time someone exited the Apple Store, with a new iPhone 5 in hand.

Grow Your Knowledge About Internet Marketing ... - Business Articles

This article has been viewed 24 times.

Whatever you do, do not miss out on marketing your business online. Promoting your website on the Internet today is an important thing to do. This is the ideal time to get involved in this endeavor. The following tips can help you figure out how to market your business.

Do not discard your projects when they don?t initially appear fruitful. Some great ideas are simply before their time or need to be rethought and tweaked. The Internet is a place that changes constantly and people find new uses for it regularly. Do not put money into things that are not successful; just wait.

Make sure you get feedback at each stage. This is important because if you have one view of your website and your customers have a different view, your website will not be successful. Ask peers, family members and your potential clients for feedback. Use this advice to help you decide what to change in your marketing campaign.

Deciding what direction to take your website and business can be a daunting task. Eliminate sites slowly until you are down to just one, which would be the one you go with. Choose a niche that you know a lot about and have an interest in. A clearly defined goal eases your ability to properly market your website.

Make sure your site is full of high-quality content. Of course, you won?t want to stop with simply a site that reads well. You also want to extend the richness by adding a lot of original and interesting content. You site shouldn?t be solely about selling a product. It should be an environment people actually want to visit.

The word ?guaranteed? has a special allure for consumers when used in internet marketing. People also know that companies sometimes don?t live up to their guarantees, so build up a reputation for honoring your promises. Your customers work hard for what they have, and guarantees give them some comfort while spending their money on your products.

You should include a page that has information or videos about the product you are selling. This will help them feel more informed about the purchase they are thinking about. This shows that you are not focused on a sale but want to inform them about your product, and then they can decide to purchase it or not.

In order to build the emotional attachment with your customer and your service or product, marketing materials online can be used. Encourage viewers by having them imagine that their life can be made easier or better with your product. Try and make the customer feel like that by making a purchase on your site, they will see a significant change in their life.

Allow customers to rate and review your products, but be sure to screen those reviews for spam. Not only can these reviews help you improve your products, but they allow potential customers to feel more confident in their purchasing decision.

A ?squeeze page? can be an effective way to gather contact info for your mailing list. This is a good way to get a customer to join your email list. You can even give them an incentive to sign up like a coupon or promotional item to get them to fill out contact information. The most important goal here is to get people to sign up so that you have their email list for future mailings.

By now you can see why Internet marketing is essential for your business. There are several approaches for this. In addition, there is a great deal of information available with regard to how to begin to enjoy its benefits. Follow the tips in this article to use Internet marketing to your advantage

Users react to Apple?s latest software update for iPhone and iPad, and it?s not all roses

Some like the new software, while others lament missing features and reportedly reduced battery life

Announced in June, the latest major release of Apple's iOS software for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch finally became available for download this week, in advance of Friday's launch of the iPhone 5. As the sixth version of the operating system, it ushers in several noteworthy changes, the most noticeable being an entirely rebuilt Maps application, Facebook integration, and a new digital wallet called Passbook.

Reaction on online forums and in social media so far has been mixed. Some are praising Apple for adding new features and streamlining others, while others are up in arms about omitted functionality and reportedly poor battery life since updating.

Apple's new Maps appNew Maps: You gain some, you lose some
One of the most prominent changes in Apple's new iPhone and iPad software is seen in a revamped Maps app that uses data from TomTom (amongst others) instead of relying on satellite imagery and other information from rival Google. As part of the change, the app now features fully 3D maps with terrain features and detailed buildings. These are only available to those with iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or newer, but the reaction to them has been largely positive from owners of compatible devices living in the U.S. We've seen a number of complaints this far from people in other countries, however, where Apple's satellite imagery is lower-resolution and the other new feature, turn-by-turn direction, is proving to be less accurate.

The overwhelming majority of complaints regarding iOS 6 are coming from those who are upset by the fact that the new Maps doesn't deliver directions and schedules for public transit, something that the older, Google-powered Maps app did. The new app also lacks Street View, a prominent feature of Google Maps.

Apple is reportedly working to further enhance Maps in subsequent updates to iOS 6. For now, though, those seeking public transit information must turn to other solutions. So far, the best we've seen is actually using the web version of Google Maps from within mobile Safari. Doing so restores access to public transit direction and Street View, although it isn't as snappy as using the native Maps app. Still, it can be added to the iPhone and iPad home screen, which at least makes accessing it easy.

Battery life taking a beating?
Since iOS 6 has become available for download, Twitter has lit up with people reporting that their iPhone and iPad batteries seem to be draining much faster than under the previous iOS release. The complaints so far are vague ? a growing number of users are even reporting improved battery life ? and Apple has yet to weigh in either way.

via Twitter

If you're experiencing what you think is decreased battery life, several factors could be at play. For one, some of the newer features, such as 3D maps and turn-by-turn directions, use considerably more battery life. So do features that require your device to be aware of your GPS location at all times. If you'd like to conserve battery life on you iPhone or iPad, you can try things like turning off Location Services for specific apps from the Settings, under Privacy and then Location Services. Even turning down your brightness slightly produces a marked improvement in battery life.

Paltry Passbook presence
If you're someone who had gotten excited by the prospect of Apple's new Passbook feature in iOS 6 ? a virtual wallet meant to hold airline boarding passes, gift cards, movie tickets, and other digital paperwork that can be scanned ? you've probably noticed by now that it isn't exactly user-friendly. The online response so far has been a collective "What does it do?" Thanks to an apparent bug, the app doesn't seem to do anything, but there's a way to fix it.

In order to make the App Store button in Passbook work, and thus see a list of apps that support it, you need to go into your device's Settings, then select General and Date & Time. From here, turn off Set Automatically and manually set your date a couple of months ahead. Now, open Passbook and the App Store button will work. You can then go back to Settings and re-enable Set Automatically.

Of course, even when it does work, the number of retailers offering apps with Passbook support is still pretty small at this point. It's possible to add your Walgreens discount card, coupons from Target, movie and baseball tickets, and Lufthansa boarding passes using it, but hopefully the selection will be expanded in the coming weeks and months.

Tales of wifi woes
A nine-page ? and growing ? discussion thread on?Apple's official support website cropped up within hours of iOS 6 becoming available, filled with reports from downloaders who had lost the ability to connect their iPhone 4S and iPads to?wifi networks since updating. Apple seems to have fixed the issue already, but if you're one of the people still affected by it you can try one of several potential solutions that have been posted by others in?the message thread.

What has your experience with Apple's new iPhone and iPad software been so far? Let us know and discuss it with others in the comments below. Still haven't updated? Find out if your device supports iOS 6 and get a rundown of the installation process.

Steps to Fix a Wet Laptop ~ Computers And Technology

Spilling a liquid on a computer or similar electronic device is quite a serious problem. But, depending on how fast you act, and how you react, you have the potential to minimize moisture related damage. If a laptop gets wet it is imperative that the computer's internal components are left to dry before attempting to re-start the machine and accessing the full extent of the damage. Provided the right steps are followed it might well be possible to salvage a water-logged laptop. Success of recovery often comes down to your ability to adequately dry-out the soaked internal components.
Here is a simple guide to fix a laptop if you spilt a liquid on it -
Firstly, unplug the laptop from its power source. Soak up any visible signs of water on the laptops surface as soon as possible, using an absorbent cloth or anything really that is close to hand. If the laptop was powered-on when the accident happened, make sure to shut-it down as quick as possible, which can be done by holding down the power button for ten seconds or so. Don't bother with closing down the individual programs; just get the machine switched off as soon as possible.
With the laptop shut down, turn the laptop over and remover the main battery pack from its housing. To do this, there is usually a latch next to the battery cover, just slide that and the batty pack should easy lift out. Removing the laptops internal power source is essential to avoid accidental start-ups and makes certain no power is able to get to the motherboard.
Now be patient and leave the laptop open and upside down. Enough time should be left for the components to completely dry out, which can take a while. Many electronic gadgets are able to start working again perfectly well, even after getting a soaking, provided it is given the time to dry out.
If you want to play really safe, you can of course take the laptop along to your local computer repair shop and have them take a look at it for you. Once the laptop is in the hands of a qualified repair tech, the chances of a full recovered are further increased.
Important note, wait for the internal components to be completely bone dry before making any attempt to power the laptop back on after a soaking. A lot of people panic, and attempt to start the laptop before it is had enough time to dry out, just to see if it still works, this is one of the worst things that can be done, and only has the potential to cause further harm. Just be patient, and leave the laptop the time it needs before attempting to power it on for the first time.

Do I need an Air Purifier? | Home Improvement | Furniture | Home ...

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air pollution ranks in the top five environmental health risks. ?Their primary advice on dealing with indoor polution is to either eliminate the source of ?the pollution or to ventilate your house with clean, outdoor air. ?Of ?course, most of the time, this isn?t possible, since the source of the allergens and pollutants are often, you guessed it, the outdoor air.

This is where an indoor air cleaner can be a great help, and the following information should help you?choose the best air cleaner that is affordable for you.

There are a variety of models to choose from, with a wide variety of capabilities and pricing. ?Most air cleaners are able to control the levels of airborne allergens and particles, like dust or dander, at a level where the homeowners are happy. ?Smaller units can handle small rooms, and larger units are required to handle the air volume of larger, or multiple rooms. ?And, within the same size unit, the more expensive models tend to be able to filter smaller particles.

At a high level, there are two distinctly different types of air cleaners:

Mechanical air cleaners The operation of these types of units are easy to understand. ? There?s a filter material, just like an air cleaner under the hood of your car, that has tiny holes in it that allow air to pass, but trap particles like dust, pollen, animal hair, and so forth. ? One example of a mechanical air cleaner you?ve probably heard of is a ?HEPA? (high-efficiency particulate air filters) filter. ?These types of filters work very well, and thus are popular not only for air cleaners, but for other appliances that require filtering, like vacuum cleaners.

Electronic air cleaners, These cleaners are a little more complex, and use theory called electrostatic attraction to trap dust and other particles. This type of cleaner usually has a device called an ionizer, which releases positively charged ions into the air. These charged ions attach themselves to airborne particles, giving them a sort of ?static cling? that forces them to stick to any nearby flat surface, like a wall or your furniture. ?It?s important to research these devices if you choose one, as some are prone to byproduct, which can irritate your lungs. However, some electronic air cleaners can produce ozone, a lung irritant.

So, what?s the bottom line on these devices? ?We recommend you?choose one that?s affordable, but that is rated to handle the size of the area that needs cleaner air. ?Even the low-end models will make a?noticeable?difference, provided they aren?t put into an area that?s larger than it can handle.

Users Report Annoying (Apparently Fixed) WiFi Bug In iOS 6

ios 6 bugIt looks like there's been another bug in today's launch of iOS 6. We've been getting multiple tips stating iOS 6 is causing a bug in users' WiFi several hours after it's installed. There are also tweets and a long discussion thread on the Apple website to that effect. Heck, it's already getting to the point where people are making jokes. Here's what the basic pattern seems to be: The WiFi works all right at first, but then you're eventually booted off.

One in every two cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in soldiers remains undiagnosed. This is the conclusion reached by a working group led by Hans-Ulrich Wittchen et al. They report their study in the current issue of Deutsches rzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2012; 109(35): 559), which is a special issue focusing on the prevalence of psychological stress in German army soldiers. In a second original article, results reported by Jens T Kowalski and colleagues show that more female soldiers contact the psychosocial support services provided by Germany's armed forces than their male colleagues (Dtsch Arztbl Int 2012; 109 (35): 559).

Wittchen et al. draw attention to the fact that thus far no information has been available on how commonly soldiers have traumatic experiences during deployments to Afghanistan and develop PSTD. In their study, 85% of all soldiers deployed overseas reported at least one distressing event, but usually several such events. Overseas deployment is associated with twice or four times the risk of PTSD for soldiers. In international comparison, the prevalence of PTSD is notably lower in German soldiers, at 2.9%, than in soldiers from other countries who are deployed in the same regions. However, the estimated proportion of undiagnosed and untreated cases of PTSD is 45%.

Kowalski et al. explain that it is not only Afghanistan from where soldiers return in a traumatized state but also Kosovo. The number of Kosovo returnees with mental problems in their study increased significantly compared to the number of traumatized soldiers returning from Afghanistan. The study is based on hospital data of all German army psychiatric wards; these data evaluated the psychiatric morbidities between January 2010 through June 2011. The most common diagnoses were adjustment disorders, PSTD, and mild and moderate depressive episodes.

2 unarmed police officers shot dead in Britain

LONDON (AP) ? Two unarmed officers were gunned down by a wanted fugitive in the Manchester area of northern England on Tuesday, police said. The dramatic shooting shocked the country, but a top officer dismissed calls to issue his force with more firearms.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy told a news conference that Fiona Bone ? a 32-year-old who was planning her wedding ? and Nicola Hughes, 23, died shortly after the gunman opened fire and set off a grenade in Hattersley, a suburban area about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from central Manchester.

The man alleged to have carried out the killings, 29-year-old Dale Cregan, surrendered at a local police station shortly after the incident and was booked on suspicion of murder. Cregan had already been the focus of an intense police manhunt as a suspect in two murders last month.

Fahy said that Cregan, or an associate, had telephoned police reporting a burglary Tuesday morning and the two officers responded. "When they arrived, it appears then that Cregan emerged into the road and killed these two officers," Fahy said, adding that the man's motive was "impossible to fathom."

Fatal gun attacks on police are a rarity in Britain, where firearms are tightly controlled and few officers carry deadly weapons. Britain's Home Office said it doesn't compile figures on the number of officers killed in the line of duty, but Steve Lloyd, who manages the Police Roll of Honor Trust ? a charity devoted to fallen policemen and women ? said that five officers had been shot dead in the past decade.

By comparison, 544 U.S. law enforcement officers were shot to death in roughly the same period, according to figures compiled by the FBI.

Prime Minister David Cameron called the Manchester shootings "a shocking reminder of the debt we owe to those who put themselves in danger to keep us safe and secure," while Scotland Yard chief Bernard Hogan-Howe described the incident as a "horrific attack."

Deadly gun attacks by criminals or terrorists occasionally lead to calls for more armed police, but Fahy batted those away Tuesday.

"We are passionate that the British style of policing is routinely unarmed policing," Fahy said. "We know from the experience in America and other countries that having armed officers certainly does not mean, sadly, that police officers do not end up getting shot dead."

Probe focuses on JPMorgan's monitoring of suspect transactions

(Reuters) - A U.S. regulatory probe of JPMorgan Chase & Co's anti-money laundering systems is focusing on potential lapses in how the largest U.S. bank monitors suspect money transactions, according to people familiar with the situation.

The probe appears to be focused on the systems and personnel that JPMorgan uses to safeguard against illicit money flows, the sources said, declining to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

One specific angle of the probe is how the bank's systems were set up to review a high volume of suspect transactions.

Banks are required to file reports of suspicious activity but that can add to costs. Regulators and banks sometimes disagree over whether those reviews produce reports that actually identify financing tied to illegal narcotics, terrorism or sanctioned countries.

JPMorgan faces being hit with a regulatory order by the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which regulates national banks. That order would identify lapses and require the bank to tighten the anti-money laundering systems it uses.

The OCC and the bank declined to discuss the details of the probe.

The probe adds to problems facing CEO Jamie Dimon, whose reputation for running one of the safest U.S. banks was dealt a blow earlier this year when it suffered a $5.8 billion trading loss. A U.S. Senate committee has launched a probe into the "London Whale" trading losses.

The OCC probe - and potentially inquiries by other regulators such as the U.S. Justice Department - could still widen and identify specific transactions that allowed illicit funds to move through the bank.

A lead OCC examiner in charge of overseeing JPMorgan has a reputation for a hard-nosed approach to uncovering money laundering at major banks, according to other people familiar with the situation.

The OCC probe comes at a time when U.S. authorities have launched a broad crackdown on money laundering. This year, a U.S. Senate probe of British bank HSBC Holdings Plc and a New York investigation into Standard Chartered Plc, also of the U.K., identified transactions tied to drug cartels in Mexico and sanctioned countries such as Iran.

HSBC set aside $700 million to cover potential settlement or fines, while Standard Chartered reached a $340 million settlement with the New York banking regulator.

In August of last year, a U.S. Treasury department that oversees violations against U.S. sanctions fined JPMorgan $88.3 million for what it called "egregious" violations of U.S. economic sanctions programs.

The OCC, which is now investigating the bank, is a separate unit within the Treasury Department.

The OCC has also come under increasing pressure to ferret out problems inside the banks it regulates. As part of the Senate probe of HSBC, the Senate panel said the OCC allowed compliance problems to "fester" at HSBC and that it failed to take action to correct the problems.

CITIGROUP TEMPLATE

The OCC probe of JPMorgan pinpoints problems at anti-money laundering offices the bank operates in cities such as Columbus, Ohio; Wilmington, Delaware; Arlington and San Antonio, Texas; and Phoenix, Arizona.

Those offices and its New York headquarters are JPMorgan's line of defense against allowing foreign banks to improperly access the U.S. banking system. For years, U.S. regulators have identified weakness in the way U.S. banks police against foreign banks moving shadowy money into the U.S. financial system.

A template for the action JPMorgan faces could be the regulatory step taken against rival Citigroup Inc in April. The bank entered into a consent order with the OCC and agreed to improve its anti-money laundering systems. Citigroup didn't admit or deny wrongdoing and it didn't pay a monetary penalty.

At the time, the OCC identified a weakness in how Citigroup processes deposits from foreign banks seeking access to the U.S. banking system. Citigroup, as part of the consent order, agreed to hire an independent consultant to review bank records to determine whether the bank identified suspicious transactions in a timely manner.

Citigroup said in April it had fixed problems identified by the OCC.

The scrutiny of JPMorgan comes amid a change at the top of the bank's anti-money laundering division.

William Langford, a respected bank official and former Treasury official, is in the process of shifting to JPMorgan's general counsel office from his post as head of JPMorgan's global anti-money laundering team.

Langford joined the bank in 2006 and recently had been seen as a potential candidate for the top spot at the Treasury Department's anti-money laundering unit, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or Fincen.

A person familiar with the job change for Langford said it was unrelated to the regulatory inquiry and it was a move he had long planned.

JPMorgan has hired an official from Citigroup to replace Langford. Last month, the Treasury Department said a Justice Department expert in money laundering, Jennifer Shasky Calvery, would become the director of Fincen.

New research could provide new insights into tuberculosis and other diseases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Researchers Patricia A. Champion and Matthew Champion from the University of Notre Dame's Eck Institute for Global Health have developed a method to directly detect bacterial protein secretion, which could provide new insights into a variety of diseases including tuberculosis.

The Champions point out that bacteria use a variety of secretion systems to transport proteins beyond their cell membranes in order to interact with their environment. For bacterial pathogens such as TB, these systems transport bacterial proteins that promote interaction with host cells, leading to virulent disease.

Previously, researchers have relied on methods that have fused enzymes or fluorescent markers to bacterial proteins to identify bacterial genes that are used to export bacterial proteins into host cells. However, these methods can't be used in the analysis of all bacterial secretion systems, which has limited understanding of the mechanisms that bacteria use to interact with host cells.

The Champions developed a modified form of bacterial proteomics using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, which directly detects the proteins from whole colonies by ionizing them with a laser. This research revealed that the method was able to specifically monitor a specialized form of protein secretion, which is a major virulence determinant in both mycobacterial pathogens, such as TB, and Gram-positive pathogens, such as Bacillus and Staphylococcus species.

The Champions demonstrated that this new method is applicable to the study of other bacterial protein export systems that could not be effectively studied under previous methods. Their method could also help in the identification of compounds that can inhibit bacterial protein secretion.

The method's importance can be seen in the fact that there are approximately 2 million fatal TB cases each year, mostly in the developing world. Also, antibiotic-resistant strains of TB are appearing increasingly.

The Champions' research findings appeared in the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and Notre Dame's Center for Rare and Neglected Diseases as well as capitalization funds from Notre Dame.
