Think tank paper seeks to challenge our understanding of domestic violence as a gendered crime.

Heather Harvey, from the women?s charity Eaves, explains why we should beware a new interpretation of domestic violence from the Centre for Social Justice.

The paper, ?Beyond Violence?, published this summer by a leading Conservative think tank, seeks to challenge our understanding of domestic violence (DV) as a gendered crime.

The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) was established by Conservative MP and secretary for the department of work and pensions, Iain Duncan Smith.

In the paper, the CSJ endorses the suggestion that 89 per cent?of DV is what can be termed ?situational couple violence?, which occurs between two mutually abusive partners within a dysfunctional relationship.

It states only 7 per cent?of DV is ?coercive and controlling?.

By suggesting that only 7 per cent?of DV is ?real DV? as we understand it, the position taken by the CSJ is reminiscent of the notion of ?real rape? and ?less-than real rape? promoted recently, most notably by Republican politician Todd Akin and by people commenting on the rape cases of Roman Polanski and Julian Assange.

The CSJ suggests a new crime should be framed to deal with the 7 per cent?of ?real DV?.

The remaining 89 per cent?of ?situational couple violence?, which they describe as a being driven by ?hot, emotional issues?, can, according to the CSJ,?be dealt with by relationship counselling.

Eaves work closely with women who have suffered domestic violence. We believe this paper represents a cynical, ideological attempt to degender DV and to reduce the government?s obligations to respect and protect women?s human rights.

The CSJ paper seeks to provide the rationale for a further reduction in funding for DV services.

But language which recasts DV into an issue of relationship and behaviour management attempts to reduce police responsibility for what accounts currently for a quarter of violent crime.

By minimising the seriousness of DV, the CSJ tries to reduce women?s right to refuge and their recognition as a priority group for accommodation.

If the analysis and the recommendations of this paper are accepted, we risk returning to a time where DV was regarded as a private matter between individuals rather than a matter for which the state has a responsibility to address adequately.

Here are some of the worrying excerpts from the paper:

?We do not address forms of domestic abuse specific to ethnic, sexual orientation, age, immigrant or other groups.?

?This report looks at the root causes of domestic abuse and provides solutions grounded in evidence rather than ideology. We avoid overly simplistic narratives that ascribe all the blame for domestic abuse to male desire to control and subjugate women.?

?While power, control and patriarchy are explanatory factors in many contexts of domestic abuse, there are many others that are also significant, including poverty, substance misuse, psychological vulnerabilities rooted in people?s past experience and the dynamics that play out between two people in a relationship.?

?A woman?s level of depression can also have some bearing on men?s violent behaviour.?

?In many areas of social policy people are treated as individuals and the importance of interpersonal connections is lost. Domestic abuse is a problem with a relationship and solutions lie within this and other relationships.?

?Current policy and practice is dominated by the important but insufficient goals of punishing perpetrators and ensuring safety for victims.?

Here are some quotes from the list of recommendations made by the paper:

?The Home Office and/or the Ministry of Justice should pilot a number of restorative justice programmes specific to domestic abuse.?

?We recommend that local authorities and other commissioners of domestic abuse services do not neglect any particular group of victim in their commissioning?.In practice this could mean giving priority to universal services rather than to those which, for example, work only with a particular minority ethnic community. This may involve ?.mergers. (One criterion for evaluating refuges could be how well they meet the needs of diverse victims).?

?Perpetrators? programs should have at least two streams ? one for perpetrators involved in strategic, controlling abuse and the other for those with more ?hot emotional? reasons behind their behaviour. Funding should be redirected from ?traditional? approaches?.

Advice needed for content writing jobs - UK Business Forums

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for any replies.

To summarise the situation, I have been working as a freelance writer for three years and have largely received positive feedback. Last year I started working exclusively for one customer; the only downside of this excellent work arrangement was that I lost contact with all previous customers. For some unknown reason I can't seem to get in contact with the person I've been working for (I hope he's alright!) and since my existence depends on this occupation, I now have to consider other options.

Unfortunately, I'm not up to date with the specifics of this activity anymore; form what I've been reading it has become a lot more competitive. I've always charged a 1 p per word ratio, which even three years ago was quite little for quality work.

Lately I've been compelled by my financial situation to accept offers of as little as 3 pounds for a minimum of 500 words, which surprisingly, the customer found to be a decent price. It's amazing really when you consider that a single article may require two or three hours of research, depending on its theme. It's quite difficult to start from scratch after having built up a good reputation and having failed to preserve it. However, I suppose I should have held on to the 3 pounds for 500 words deal before I ended up trying my luck on iWriter for less than 2.50 dollars for 2-3 hours of work.

Which brings me to the observation that such websites (in my opinion anyway) are a massive waste of time. Which is a mere opinion of course; I hope I'm allowed to write this here. Some of the people requesting articles actually demand excellence at that ridiculous rate. And the worst part is that they are free to reject an article without even giving you a reason. A normal collaboration entails some type of communication, and if anything needs to be modified it can easily be done, without rejecting the whole article. Not to mention that sometimes the indications given are not clear or complex enough to illustrate the customer's requirements, and of course, when the result doesn't meet their expectations, the article ends up being tossed aside.

These people simply take liberties with regards to the time and effort put in by other human beings and don't even bother to give them an explanation. It seems to me they are under the impression that these articles are similar to mass-produced items they can select from, and not bespoke ''products'' they have actually placed an order for. This is not equitable in the slightest.

Which brings me to my question (if you've been patient enough to read this, thank you) : what are the realistic expectations of someone like me earning a steady income out of this activity anytime soon, and where should I look for work?

SpaceX launch good for NASA, not private firm

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A private rocket successfully sent a capsule full of cargo zipping toward the International Space Station in a first of its kind delivery for NASA, but couldn't deliver on job No. 2: putting a commercial satellite into the correct orbit.

One of nine engines on Space X company's Falcon 9 rocket failed Sunday 79 seconds after launch because of a pressure loss. The engine didn't explode, but it did start a series of events that meant another company's private satellite is not in the place it is needed.

The main mission for the Falcon launch ? delivering half a ton of science and food supplies toward the space station ? is still on track with a docking of the cargo-laden Dragon capsule scheduled for Wednesday. SpaceX on Monday said the ship's flight computer calculated a new path to the station for the capsule. It is the first of a dozen supply runs under a mega-contract with NASA.

"Falcon 9 did exactly what it was designed to do," the California based SpaceX said. "Like the Saturn V, which experienced engine loss on two flights, Falcon 9 is designed to handle an engine out situation and still complete its mission."

But not all of its mission.

The original plan was for Falcon to fire its second stage engines after Dragon left and then deploy an industrial communications satellite into orbit for Orbcomm of Dulles, Va.

Because this is a new resupply ship for the space station, NASA and its international partners had set detailed safety rules in advance for Falcon, even though the engine failure was far from the station. And those rules prevent SpaceX from firing its second stage engines, Orbcomm said in a statement.

The satellite is in a lower orbit and engineers are trying to figure out how to boost it, Orbcomm said.

This was the first of 18 satellites that Orbcomm had hired SpaceX to deliver. The satellites help in two-way communications for companies to track their heavy equipment across the world. The company wouldn't respond to questions about the cost of the satellite or launch services.

Harvard University astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who tracks launches worldwide, noticed the problem for hours before either company acknowledged that the satellite was in the wrong orbit. Even though SpaceX was congratulating itself after the launch, McDowell said: "We can't say that it was a perfect launch."

AKRON, Ohio ? Thousands of breast cancer survivors, their families and volunteers walked in Akron?s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser Sunday.

The annual 5K walk is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Money raised from the walk is used to help fund breast cancer research, provide free services to breast cancer patients and survivors, fund access to mammograms, and a host of other awareness initiatives.

One walker dedicated the event to her late mother, who survived the disease. She too is a breast cancer survivor.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is one of more than 270 events of its kind held in the United States this year.

Each year, more than 226,000 are diagnosed with breast cancer.
