Mario Livio: Science in the 21st Century: A Few Random Thoughts

Predictions about the future of science and technology are notorious for turning out to be wrong. There is a story (possibly apocryphal) that in 1894, a writer in the London Times estimated that in 50 years the streets of London would be buried under nine feet of horse manure from all the horse-drawn cabs and buses (there were about 11,000 cabs in London at the end of the nineteenth century).

Nevertheless, we know of at least a few topics that will undoubtedly be active areas of research for the next half-century. In my own field of astronomy and astrophysics, the search for extraterrestrial life is arguably the most intriguing endeavor. Upcoming and proposed facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope and a next generation of large optical telescopes in space (Figure 1) will take important steps in this quest, as will missions to planets and satellites in our own solar system. It is quite likely, however, that even before alien life is found, biologists will succeed in creating synthetic life in the laboratory (see Creating Life in the Lab). At the same time, in the arena of post human-genome-sequencing science, biologists will strive to understand precisely how the genetic code triggers and directs other life-related processes, such as the construction of proteins (Figure 2). A deeper understanding of the genome and how it functions could perhaps lead to a substantial--even dramatic--extension of the human lifespan.

Returning from the complex to the fundamental, one major question that will almost certainly preoccupy scientists in the next few decades is the synthesis of General Relativity with quantum mechanics. Finding a theory of space-time and gravity that is fully compatible with the quantum principles has so far eluded physicists. Along the way, with the help of astronomers, physicists will also unquestionably attempt to elucidate the nature of the Dark Energy that propels the accelerating cosmic expansion. Additionally, if the experience with string theory (the idea that subatomic particles represent vibration modes of tiny loops) can be any guide, the formulation of a unified theory of quantum gravity will require the development of mathematical tools that are not currently available.

I do not wish to make any predictions in the areas of computer science and information technology, simply because progress in those fields has reached such a breakneck pace, that any forecast is likely to appear ridiculous even a mere decade from now. I will only note that the combined efforts on understanding the operation of the human brain and on "smart" computers are likely to produce artificial intelligence machines capable of unimaginable feats in the not-too-distant future.

Progress will not be free of risks. We have already gotten a glimpse of what climate change, shortages of food or energy, failure of electrical grids, or cyber-attacks can do. These problems will not go away. Rather, in the absence of serious preventative actions, they will only get worse. Many ethical questions will also need to be addressed, as questionable procedures (such as human cloning) will become feasible. This is not a reason for panic. In the same way that human ingenuity can produce advances in science and technology, it can also be harnessed (in principle, at least) to confront environmental and ethical challenges.

Jordan sees new surge in Syrians fleeing civil war

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A Jordanian official says there is a new surge in Syrians fleeing across the border to Jordan as fighting intensifies in southern Syria.

A government spokesman for Syrian refugee affairs told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Jordan now hosts 418,529 Syrian refugees.

Anmar Hmoud says 2,490 Syrians crossed into Jordan overnight, with the numbers averaging about 3,000 per night in recent days.

By the end of March, Jordan could have as many as half a million Syrian refugees.

Some of those coming through unofficial border crossings find shelter in Jordan's Zaatari camp, now home to more than 105,700 refugees. Many more live among Jordanian families.

The camp has seen sporadic violent protests over its harsh desert conditions.

The U.N. says there are nearly 925,000 Syrians displaced throughout the region.

Pope recalls 'joy,' difficulties in final audience

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI bid an emotional farewell Wednesday on the eve of his retirement, recalling moments of "joy and light" during his papacy, but also times of difficulty when "it seemed like the Lord was sleeping."

Some 150,000 people, many waving banners proclaiming "Grazie!" flooded St. Peter's Square, eager to bear witness to the final hours of a papacy that will go down in history as the first in 600 years to end in resignation rather than death.

Benedict basked in the emotional send-off, taking a long victory lap around the square in an open-sided car, and stopping to kiss and bless half a dozen babies. Seventy cardinals, some tearful, sat in solemn attendance ? and gave him a standing ovation at the end of his speech.

Benedict then made a quick exit, forgoing the meet-and-greet session that typically follows his weekly general audience, as if to not prolong the goodbye.

Given the weight of the moment, Benedict also replaced his usual Wednesday catechism lesson with a heartfelt final address, explaining once again why he was retiring and assuring his flock of 1.2 billion that he was not abandoning them.

"To love the church means also to have the courage to take difficult, painful decisions, always keeping the good of the church in mind, not oneself," Benedict said to thundering applause.

He noted that a pontiff has no privacy ? neither as pope, nor in his future role as emeritus pope: "He belongs always and forever to everyone, to the whole church."

During his eight years as pope, Benedict said he had had "moments of joy and light, but also moments that haven't been easy. ... Moments of turbulent seas and rough winds, as has occurred in the history of the church, when it seemed like the Lord was sleeping."

But he said he never felt alone, that God always guided him, and he thanked his cardinals and colleagues for their support and for "understanding and respecting this important decision."

The pope's tenure has been beset by the clerical sex abuse scandal, discord over everything from priestly celibacy to women's ordination, and most recently the betrayal by his own butler, who stole his private papers and leaked them to a journalist.

Under a bright sun and blue skies, the square was overflowing with pilgrims and curiosity-seekers. Those who couldn't get in watched on giant TV screens set up along the main boulevard leading to the square. About 50,000 tickets were requested, and in the end, the Vatican estimated that 150,000 people flocked to the farewell.

"It's difficult ? the emotion is so big," said Jan Marie, a 53-year-old Roman in his first years as a seminarian. "We came to support the pope's decision."

With chants of "Benedetto!" the mood was far more buoyant than during the pope's final Sunday blessing. It recalled the jubilant turnouts that often accompanied him at World Youth Days and events involving his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

Benedict has said he decided to retire after realizing that, at 85, he simply didn't have the "strength of mind or body" to carry on.

"I have taken this step with the full understanding of the seriousness and also the novelty of the decision, but with a profound serenity in my soul," Benedict told the crowd.

He will meet Thursday morning with his cardinals for a final time, then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

There, at 8 p.m., the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over ? for now.

Many of the cardinals who will choose Benedict's successor were in St. Peter's Square for his final audience. Among them was retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, the object of a grass-roots campaign in the U.S. to persuade him to recuse himself for having covered up for sexually abusive priests. Mahony has said he will be among the 115 cardinals voting for the next pope.

"God bless you," Mahony said when asked by television crews about the U.S. campaign.

Also in attendance were cardinals over 80, who can't participate in the conclave but will take part in meetings next week to discuss the problems facing the church and the qualities needed in a new pope.

"I am joining the entire church in praying that the cardinal electors will have the help of the Holy Spirit," 82-year-old Spanish Cardinal Julian Herranz said.

Herranz has been authorized by the pope to brief voting-age cardinals on his investigation into the leaks of papal documents that exposed corruption in the Vatican administration.

Vatican officials say cardinals will begin meeting Monday to decide when to set the date for the conclave.

Still, the rank-and-file faithful weren't so concerned with the future: They wanted to savor the final moments of a pope they have known for years.

"I came to thank him for the testimony that he has given the church," said Maria Cristina Chiarini, a 52-year-old homemaker who traveled by train from Lugo in central Italy with about 60 members of her parish. "There's nostalgia, human nostalgia, but also comfort. Because as Christians we have hope. The Lord won't leave us without a guide."

Virus shows promise as prostate cancer treatment

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

A recombinant Newcastle disease virus kills all kinds of prostate cancer cells, including hormone resistant cells, but leaves normal cells unscathed, according to a paper published online ahead of print in the Journal of Virology. A treatment for prostate cancer based on this virus would avoid the adverse side effects typically associated with hormonal treatment for prostate cancer, as well as those associated with cancer chemotherapies generally, says corresponding author Subbiah Elankumaran of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg. The modified virus is now ready to be tested in preclinical animal models, and possibly in phase I human clinical trials.

Newcastle disease virus kills chickens, but does not harm humans. It is an oncolytic virus that hones in on tumors, and has shown promising results in a number of human clinical trials for various forms of cancer. However, successful treatments have required multiple injections of large quantities of virus, because in such trials the virus probably failed to reach solid tumors in sufficient quantities, and spread poorly within the tumors.

The researchers addressed this problem by modifying the virus's fusion protein. Fusion protein fuses the virus envelope to the cell membrane, enabling the virus to enter the host cell. These proteins are activated by being cleaved by any of a number of different cellular proteases. They modified the fusion protein in their construct such that it can be cleaved only by prostate specific antigen (which is a protease). That minimizes off-target losses, because these "retargeted" viruses interact only with prostate cancer cells, thus reducing the amount of virus needed for treatment.

Retargeted Newcastle disease virus has major potential advantages over other cancer therapies, says Elankumaran. First, its specificity for prostate cancer cells means it would not attack normal cells, thereby avoiding the various unpleasant side effects of conventional chemotherapies. In previous clinical trials, even with extremely large doses of naturally occurring strains, "only mild flu-like symptoms were seen in cancer patients," says Elankumaran. Second, it would provide a new treatment for hormone-refractory patients, without the side effects of testosterone suppression that result from hormonal treatments.

About one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and one in 36 will die of this disease. Men whose prostate cancer becomes refractory to hormone treatment have a median survival of about 40 months if they have bone metastases, and 68 months if they do not have bone metastases.

China considers overhaul to streamline government

BEIJING (AP) ? The Ministry of Railways operates ultramodern bullet trains but its singular focus on rail at a time of booming car ownership and air travel makes it a relic from an era when 100 ministries ran China's planned economy.

That could soon change. China's new Communist leaders are considering another shake-up of a sprawling bureaucracy that has added market regulators and shed agencies that once dictated prices and told companies what to produce.

Modernizing the rail ministry ? a Soviet-style behemoth with 2.1 million employees, its own courts and police and 1.7 billion passengers last year ? by making it part of a transportation "super ministry" would be a likely priority.

Such change would be politically fraught since it threatens top jobs and influence, the lifeblood of party factions. And it could require years to complete. But reformers say it is urgently needed to keep the world's second-largest economy growing strongly.

"If the new leaders want to demonstrate they are in charge, they want to break the logjam, then this is a great time," said Dali Yang, a specialist in the Chinese government at the University of Chicago.

Though details of the streamlining have yet to be announced, General Secretary Xi Jinping and other Communist Party leaders opened a three-day meeting Tuesday to discuss a reorganization plan, state media reported. The closed-door meeting of the Central Committee will also approve the appointment of top government officials who will be publicly announced early next month at the annual session of the ceremonial legislature. That will complete a power transition begun in November when Xi was installed as party leader.

A goal of the government consolidation is to create "super ministries" that pull together a jumble of agencies with overlapping duties in broad fields such as transportation, media, energy, finance and health.

Under scenarios discussed in official media, the Ministry of Railways might be united with agencies that oversee road and air travel.

The Ministry of Culture might absorb regulators for film, publishing and TV, where boundaries have been blurred by the rise of Internet- and mobile phone-based media. The hated family planning agency, which enforces China's birth limits, might be folded into the Ministry of Health.

The potential impact on private and foreign companies is unclear, but American and European business groups regularly urge Beijing to simplify regulation and approval processes they say slow investment and hamper operations.

China has undergone repeated bouts of government restructuring to keep pace with a changing economy.

In 1982, the number of Cabinet-level ministries and commissions was slashed from 100 to 61. In the 1990s, museum pieces such as the Ministry of Machine Building that were no longer needed to set prices and tell companies what to produce were eliminated. In 1998, then-Premier Zhu Rongji shrank the number of ministries further from 40 to 29.

At the same time, Beijing created Western-style regulators for banks and securities. A Ministry of Commerce was formed in 2003 to bring together trade and planning agencies, simplifying some trade regulation to make it easier for private sector traders to function.

Such change can provoke furious opposition. In the last round of proposed reforms in 2008, the only thing leaders finally agreed on was to make the environmental regulator a full-fledged ministry in response to an avalanche of pollution scandals.

Creating fewer, bigger ministries would fit with party pledges to make the economy more productive and keep incomes growing. Xi has called for a "renewal of the Chinese nation," raising hopes a new leader whose attitude toward reform is still unclear might throw his political weight behind remaking the government.

There is, however, no indication the restructuring will affect state-owned companies that dominate most major industries including telecommunications, banking and oil and have direct ties to the top ranks of the party. That will blunt the impact of the restructuring on making markets more competitive and productive.

If leaders take action, they are likely to produce no more than one or two concrete proposals to start, and that might not be until August, said a European diplomat who follows the internal workings of China's government.

And if they fail to release firm plans before the party's plenum late this year, that will suggest they have failed to agree, said the diplomat, who asked not to be identified by name because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

In a reflection of political resistance, the Chinese business magazine Caijing says proposals to group together "big energy," ''big culture," "big finance" and "big system reform committee" were dropped from a draft plan.

And merging rival agencies into one big ministry is no guarantee factions that run them will cooperate.

The World Bank and a Cabinet think tank warned last year growth will deteriorate if Beijing fails to act quickly to curb the dominance of state industry and nurture private companies that generate jobs and wealth. Reformers say ministries that operate their own companies, giving them incentive to suppress private competitors, must be stripped of commercial interests and turned into neutral regulators.

The Ministry of Railways is the biggest example of regulatory throwbacks reformers say must evolve for China to thrive.

In an echo of the 1960s, when ministries were powerful, self-contained empires, it still operates its own police force and courts. Other state entities shed such non-core functions years ago. Its spending is huge; last year's capital spending plan was 745 billion yuan ($115 billion) ? comparable to the 670 billion yuan ($105 billion) military budget.

The ministry has built the world's biggest bullet train network but China's poor majority can't afford it and slower lines are crowded. Cargo service is expensive and inflexible, a dangerous bottleneck for a major trading economy.

The political opening for change might have come when the powerful railway minister, Liu Zhijun, was dismissed in February, 2011, amid corruption allegations. Later that year, a collision between two bullet trains that killed 40 people fueled demands for the ministry to be more responsive to public needs.

Rumors swirling around the fate of media regulators highlight potential pitfalls of consolidation.

The infant online and mobile entertainment industry flourished while regulators refrained from enforcing controls that limit the ability of traditional broadcasters to show foreign programs and other popular material. Change might simplify rules but also could bring more censorship and other controls that might hold back a promising industry.

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs. PadFone 2... fight!

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs PadFone 2 fight!

We happened to have a PadFone 2 with us at ASUS' MWC event, so it was only natural for us to put it next to the brand-spanking-new PadFone Infinity for a few photos. Unlike the jump from the original PadFone to the PadFone 2, the latest generation ditches the polycarbonate body with the iconic zen pattern in favor of an aerospace-grade aluminum unibody. Placing the PadFone Infinity and its shorter predecessor side by side you can see that the former is actually slimmer over all, and we dig the premium feel as well. Other notable differences include a new position for the loudspeaker, which is now on the top right side of the bezel instead of the back; and the 13-megapixel camera is now off-center.

You'd think the smaller PadFone 2 would easily fit into the bigger bay in the new PadFone Station (using the same special micro-USB socket), but interestingly, it didn't work for us. We might give it another go when we eventually get hold of a review unit, of course (it's OK, Jonney, we'll be gentle).

Samsung HomeSync Android TV box hands-on (video)

DNP Samsung HomeSync Android TV box handson video

Yesterday, Samsung announced the HomeSync Android TV box, and as expected that device is making an appearance here on the MWC 2013 show floor. Boxy media hubs can only be so attractive, but the HomeSync's grey-and-black aesthetic is sleek, and the brushed-metal finish will look familiar to anyone who's used a Sammy handset or laptop. There's a pair of USB 3.0 inputs, an HDMI port, optical audio and Ethernet connections on the rear, and buttons for power and settings on the front, but you can easily hide the console deep inside your home theater rig -- it can be controlled exclusively with a Android 4.2-equipped smartphone or tablet.

The Jelly Bean-powered HomeSync runs a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1TB of storage, and it supports up to eight accounts for uploading, downloading and sharing content between devices. Those with a Galaxy device will be able to wirelessly stream content to their TVs in full 1080p, and Play Store access is on board for downloading additional media. It worked well during our hands-on, but as with any WiFi-equipped streaming device, there was noticeable lag when mirroring the smartphone display on the connected HDTV. Still, assuming the price is right, we can see this being a solid component within any home theater setup. Take a closer look in our hands-on video after the break.

South Africa: will Pistorius train while on bail?

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius on Monday informed South African authorities that he wants to resume athletic training while on bail for the murder case against him, a government official said.

A spokeswoman for the Olympic runner, however, denied that he was making immediate plans to return to the track while awaiting trial for the Feb. 14 shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

"Absolutely not," said spokeswoman Janine Hills. "He is currently in mourning and his focus is not on his sports."

The double-amputee Paralympian discussed bail terms with his probation officer and a correctional official at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court in the capital, Hills said. The guidelines will determine his daily routine until his next court appearance on June 4.

"It's his wish to continue to practice," James Smalberger, chief deputy commissioner of the department of correctional services, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Smalberger said the issue came up because authorities need to know his movements whenever he leaves the home where he is staying.

The timing of any resumption of training was uncertain.

Pistorius' longtime coach, Ampie Louw, declined to comment on any training plans for the runner, referring questions to a spokeswoman for the athlete's family.

Louw had said when the runner was in detention that he wanted to put him back into training in the event that he was granted bail. But he had also said Pistorius could be "heartbroken" and unwilling to immediately run again.

Pistorius, who was released on bail Friday, is staying at the house of his uncle, Arnold, in the affluent suburb of Waterkloof in Pretoria. He faces life imprisonment if convicted.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the killing of Steenkamp, in the early hours of Valentine's Day. Prosecutors say the pair had an argument before Steenkamp was killed; Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder and shot her accidentally.

Smalberger said officials will visit Pistorius at his uncle's home at least four times a month, and that the runner indicated his interest in training again. More planning must occur before the start of any training.

"We want a training program from his coach so that we have backup for his movements," Smalberger said.

"He's not under house arrest, but his movements need to be known to us so that we don't pitch there and he's not there," he said. "We agree on 'free time' normally during the course of the day, and in the evening we expect him to be home."

Pistorius' 2013 season had been geared towards the Aug. 10-18 World Championships in Moscow, where the South African 4x400 relay team will be trying for another medal to add to the silver it won at the 2011 edition.

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair had set bail at 1 million rand ($113,000). The 26-year-old track star was also ordered to hand over his passports, turn in any guns he owns and keep away from his upscale home in a gated community in Pretoria, the scene of the crime.

He cannot leave the district of Pretoria without his probation officer's permission and is not allowed to consume drugs or alcohol, the magistrate said.

5 most shocking Seth MacFarlane Oscar lines

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Seth MacFarlane's Sunday-night stint hosting the Oscars drew both criticism and praise. The "Family Guy" host definitely pushed the envelope -- it was hard to imagine some of his jokes coming from past Oscar hosts, such as Billy Crystal or Ellen DeGeneres. Here's a look at five of his most controversial lines.

Robyn Beck / AFP - Getty Images

Host Seth MacFarlane pushed the envelope on Oscar humor, and not everyone laughed.

1. "I would argue, however, that the actor who really got inside?Lincoln's?head was John Wilkes Booth."?
MacFarlane followed this up by acknowledging the audience's groans and gasps, saying "150 years and it's still too soon, huh?" Too soon, or just too crass. After all, "South Park" once joked about Lincoln's assassination, sending a giant statue of Booth after a giant rampaging statue of Lincoln. Big difference: Their joke was actually funny.?

2. "To give you an idea of how young (Quvenzhane Wallis) is, it'll be 16 years before she's too young for Clooney."
This joke doesn't even make that much sense. Wallis is 9, so he's joking about her dating someone at age 25, and Clooney may have some younger girlfriends at times, but he's no Doug Hutchison (the 51-year-old actor who wed 16-year-old Courtney Stodden in 2011.) It might be different if Clooney had a sleazy reputation. But there's one saving grace -- at least MacFarlane didn't go as far as the Onion and refer to the 9-year-old nominee with an offensive sexual term.

3. "Rex Reed will be out here to review Adele?s performance of 'Skyfall.'"
The remark assumes viewers know that movie critic Rex Reed took heat for comparing "Identity Thief" star Melissa McCarthy to a hippo. So MacFarlane's calling Adele, a gifted singer and one of the few women at the Oscars who didn't look bone-thin, a hippo? Gee, we wonder why some viewers, Adele fans or not, took offense.

4. "(There's) a?lot of controversy over the multiple uses of the n-word (in 'Django Unchained.')? I am told the screenplay is loosely based on Mel Gibson's voice mails."
When this met with disapproval from the audience, MacFarlane cracked, "Oh, you're on his side." Gibson's problems with ethnic slurs are well-documented, but they also feel a little old. No one's on Gibson's side when it comes to the slurs, but maybe they're ready to move on?

In a first-of-its-kind study, sports medicine specialist Dr. Neeru Jayanthi and colleagues found that injuredyoung athletes who play a single sport such as tennis spent much less time in free play and unorganized sports than uninjured athletes who play tennis and many other sports.?

Jayanthi presented his findings at the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science and United States Tennis Association-Tennis Medicine and Injury Conference in Atlanta.?There were 891 young athletes who were seen at Loyola University Health System and Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago clinics. Participants included 618 athletes who sought treatment for sports injuries and 273 uninjured athletes who came in for sports physicals.

?Study participants included 124 tennis players (74 of whom played tennis exclusively). The study has enrolled 891 athletes so far, and has received two grants from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. The study began as a project in a Loyola program called STAR (Student Training in Approaches to Research.??Among single-sport tennis players, the ones who suffered injuries spent 12.6 hours per week playing organized tennis and only 2.4 hours per week in free play and recreation.

?By comparison, the uninjured tennis players spent only 9.7 hours per week playing organized sports, and 4.3 hours a week in free play and recreation. the injured tennis players spent more than 5 times as much time playing organized tennis as they did in free play and recreation, while the uninjured players spent only 2.6 times as much time playing organized tennis as they did in free play and recreation.?There was found a similar ratio when he compared injured athletes who specialize in tennis with uninjured athletes who play other sports.

?The injured tennis players spent 5.3 times as much time playing organized tennis as they did in free play and recreation, while the uninjured athletes spent only 1.9 times as much time playing organized sports as they did in free play and recreation.?One way to avoid injuries in young athletes may be for them to simply spend more time in unorganized free play such as pick-up games, a Loyola University Medical Study has found.??

???This article really got me, because I used to play tennis, and I have to stop for my injuries.? I started playing when I was five, I loved it. The classes were active and entertaining and I had a lot of fun, and I had a lot of recreation playing, but when I turned 12 I started taking the competitions very seriously, and started training 4 times a week, that was 8 hours per week. When I turned 14 I got in the tennis camp for the summer and I literally played every day for 45 days 8 hours the day. When I got back home I wanted to be perfect, that created me a lot of frustration and stress, I played the whole day until 9 pm.This article links to my life because, well with so much intensive training, in the middle of a competition I got a horrible pain in my back turned out that I had scoliosis; I had an S shape on my column. I had to go to physiotherapy and swimming classes.?I?m not allowed to play anymore, this studies are true, If I had taken it slowly and actually playing for fun and not to win and be the best, I wouldn?t had get injured and I would still be able to play.?The area of interaction of this article is Health and Social Education because is a reaserch for young player injuries done by Society for Tennis Medicine and Science and United States Tennis Association-Tennis Medicine and Injury.?

Anonymous Hacked Twitter Accounts Using Security Breach

The Anonymous group said their Twitter accounts have been hacked by another rival group known as Rustle League, which also took over other accounts from Burger King, Jeep and BBC Top Gear.

Anonymous Hacked

There is major concern going on at Twitter of other possible breached accounts that haven?t been made public yet. It?s not clear on how many accounts have been breached by the hackers.

The Anonymous group had over 160,000 followers prior to its security breach.

Experts warn that users need to strengthen their passwords.

?The reason Anonymous fell victim is probably human weakness,? said Graham Cluley, senior consultant at security firm Sophos. ?Chances are that they followed poor password practices, like using the same password in multiple places or choosing a password that was easy to crack.?

Cluley explained that everyone should learn better password security techniques, such as using at least one number in their passwords.

?if it can happen to an account run by Anonymous supporters, it could happen to you,? he said.

On Monday, the account for Burger King was breached and on Tuesday that of Chrysler-owned Jeep was broken into.

One message on the Burger King account claimed that the company had been sold to McDonalds while the Jeep account tweeted about rival cars.

Meanwhile, BBC presenter Jeremy Clarkson?s account was hacked by spammers advertising weight-loss tablets.

Twitter has told its account holders that they need to be smarter with their passwords.

In a blog post published on Tuesday, Bob Lord, director of Information Security, said: ?Over the past couple of days, there?s been a fair amount of conversation about account security on Twitter,?

He urged users to have strong passwords. ?Your password should be at least 10 characters that include upper and lower case characters, numbers and symbols,? he said.

The Anonymous hack on Thursday morning was short-lived. Three hours later, those running the feed tweeted that they had gained back control of their account.

As well as raising issues about password security on Twitter, the incident also raises questions about the status of Anonymous.

But in a recent report, security firm McAfee suggested that Anonymous could fall into decline this year.

?Many are starting to prefer making a profit over a political point, not only through carrying out actions themselves but also offering a hacking-as-a-service to those less technically able.?,? said Raj Samani, McAfee?s chief technical officer for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

?The authorities have launched a crackdown on Anonymous and quite a number of its key members have been arrested,? he added.
Chinese links?

Much of the focus on cyber crime has shifted this week to the extent and scale of Chinese hacking.

The new HTC One and Sense: Hello, gorgeous!

During events simultaneously held in New York City and London Tuesday, HTC unveiled its latest phone, the slender HTC One, along with the newest version of the HTC Sense user experience. The upgrades ? everything from a new camera and powerful quad-core processor to a Windows Phone-style tile interface ? make this quite the desirable handset.

Jason MacKenzie, president of global sales at HTC, handled the unveiling in New York City. He proudly declared that the HTC One "improves every part of the smartphone experience."

The HTC One has a quadcore processor, 2GB of RAM, a stunning 4.7-inch 1080p HD display, and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. In the back, the One has what's being dubbed the HTC Zoe camera with Ultra Pixel. (HTC didn't reveal how many megapixels the main camera packs, but we've heard rumors that it's a 13-megapixel monster.)

There are front-facing stereo speakers (which supposedly give significantly clearer sound) and dual-microphones. Those dual-microphones may help you record typically overwhelming sound, such as in a concert hall, and also offer crisper calls.

HTC's design director, Jonah Becker showed off the new HTC Sense ? version 5, in case you're wondering. He made it a point to emphasize BlinkFeed, which puts something resembling tiles containing social updates, photos, news and other relevant details onto your homescreen, to keep you up to date on things. (Yes, yes. we've seen features like this before, but in our early look, it appears that HTC implemented it quite nicely.)

HTC also redesigned its music player, which "takes advantage of the cloud" to provide extra info. Lyrics can appear in real time with music, for instance. This seems rather useful ? especially if you're a rising karaoke star.

What's truly fantastic about the One is something called HTC Zoe. I accidentally discovered this feature while playing with the One prior to HTC's event. Zoe lets you create "live galleries," by recording three-second snippets of video every time you take a photo. (Yes, this instantly reminded me of Twitter's Vine, but it's significantly lower effort ... since the video snippets are recorded without a user needing to do anything other than take a photo.) The resulting clips are clear and gorgeous, even in dimly lit environments.

I have to say, I am rather impressed with the new HTC One. The phone is slender and light ? despite its gigantic display ? and its aluminum unibody is gorgeous. Even though I've had qualms about prior variations of HTC Sense, I found the latest version to be snappy and responsive. My initial impressions have me enamored with this Android device ? and that's definitely high praise coming from an iPhone fangirl.

T-Mobile and AT&T chimed in to say that they will offer the HTC One. A press release from HTC revealed that Sprint will carry the device as well. (No luck for Verizon customers though? We asked the carrier and received a "no comment." Here's hoping that just means Verizon is still testing the device, and won't confirm until it passes muster.) No details on pricing, but we do know that the HTC One should start shipping in late March. When the time comes, you'll be able to get the One in black or silver, in 32GB or 64GB variations.

DOL wants feedback on proposed worker classification survey ...

The Department of Labor (DOL) is planning to survey workers on their knowledge of basic employment laws, so it can gauge their experiences with worker misclassification. Before the DOL begins its survey, however, it wants your input. Comments are due by March 12, 2013.

Beware: This may be the best indication yet that the DOL is planning to crack down on employers that misclassify employees as independent contractors. (78 F.R. 2447, 1-11-13)

First-time survey. According to the DOL, this is the first time it?s collected information on worker misclassification. Its goal is to measure workers? knowledge about their current job classification and their knowledge about the rights and benefits associated with that status. The DOL said that employers aren?t currently required to inform employees about their status, the basis for that determination or their pay. As a result, the DOL said, workers may not be prepared for the consequences of misclassification.

A copy of the proposed information request is available by calling Karen Livingston at (202) 693-0023. The DOL requests that you focus your comments on the following areas:

  • Whether the survey is necessary for the DOL to do its job
  • Whether the survey imposes a burden on respondents and the weight of that burden
  • Whether the survey is understandable.

YOU?VE SENT MAIL: Email comments to: WHDPRAComments@dol.gov. Include the agency name (Wage and Hour Division) and the Control Number (201300389). Reminder: Be nice! All comments will be available for public inspection and copying in their entirety.

    Coach's criticism ignites Duquesne's Marhold

After a 22-point blowout loss Feb. 5 against George Washington, Duquesne coach Jim Ferry blasted his team's lack of effort, called into question the leadership of some upperclassmen and called out senior post player Andre Marhold, saying "he has given us nothing for quite a long time."

It was that last bit -- calling out a player publicly -- that got some people's attention because coaches ordinarily don't go that route. But Ferry has been a straight shooter since he arrived and was being honest about why Marhold was no longer a starter.

Marhold, however, had no problem with what Ferry said because he knew he wasn't getting the job done and needed a wake-up call.

"I was OK with it because I am not good at communicating things often and, sometimes, I probably don't always hear what people are saying," Marhold said, then laughed. "But me sitting on the bench and hearing my coach say I am not helping the team, well, that's a good way to get my attention."

Clearly, Ferry's motivational tactic worked because Marhold had an excellent game in the loss against Xavier last Saturday and earned his way back into the starting lineup for the Dukes stunning, 84-83 win Thursday night at Temple.

In fact, since Ferry called him out, Marhold has been the Dukes' best player. He scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Musketeers and posted 15 points and 15 rebounds against the Owls.

    • Matchup: Duquesne (8-16, 1-9 Atlantic 10) vs. Rhode Island (7-16, 2-9), 7 p.m. today, Palumbo Center.

    • Radio: WPGB-FM (104.7).

    • Duquesne: Ended an 11-game losing streak Thursday with 84-83 win at Temple. ... Andre Marhold has scored 24 points and grabbed 25 rebounds in past two games. ... Marhold started against Temple after being a reserve for several weeks. ... Average 12.6 turnovers per game.

    • Rhode Island: Ended 6-game losing streak with a 75-72 win Wednesday against Dayton. ... Leading scorer is Xavier Munford (17.5 ppg). ... Leads series with Duquesne, 28-24, but is 11-12 in games in Pittsburgh. ... Won a thriller, 77-76, in 2011 in last trip here.

    • Hidden stat: Duquesne has lost five home games in a row; Rhode Island has lost three consecutive road games.

Marhold also had three blocked shots in the waning moments of the Temple game, and they were huge as the Dukes won by one point. Every possession was crucial.

He said that as soon as he heard Ferry's comments he knew his coach was right and decided to make the necessary changes to his attitude and work habits to ensure that he could finish his senior year the right way and help his team win some games down the stretch.

"I just used Coach's comments as motivation, decided I needed to take a look in the mirror and see what it was that I could do better," Marhold said. "I just knew that I needed to change, go back to being that leader, getting our guys hyped and ready, working hard at practice, doing everything in my power to make changes so that I can become not just a better player but also a better person.

"I feel like I know what he is talking about, he wants us not just to play hard but to make plays as well. My mentality has changed. Now, I am thinking in terms of making plays.

"Really, it was on me, I know that, and I just want to make sure that I keep working hard and really improving and being a leader the rest of the way here."

Marhold will start tonight when Duquesne (8-16, 1-8 Atlantic 10) plays host to Rhode Island (7-16, 2-8). He said he plans on being a starter the rest of the way.

"I need to keep this going," he said. "Just working hard and being a leader and helping us win games, that's where my focus needs to be."

The win against Temple broke an 11-game losing streak, but Marhold said that is behind the Dukes, who are now trying to mount a winning streak.

"We experienced a big win before -- against West Virginia -- then got all happy and came out the next game flat and got blown out of the gym by team we could beat [Robert Morris], so we know what that is like and aren't going to do that again," Marhold said. "Guys got a taste of winning and want more, and there were a lot of guys in [Friday] early watching film, working out and getting focused on our next game.

"I know we are going to come out ready to play and play as hard on defense as we did against Temple and, if we do that and rebound, we will have a great chance to win."
