Obama stresses Syria chemical weapons worries in call with Putin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama took U.S. concerns about Syrian chemical weapons to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, reaching out to one of the Syrian government's staunchest allies.
The United States is trying to determine the facts around alleged Syrian use of chemical weapons. Last week U.S. officials said they had "varying degrees of confidence" that Syria had likely used the nerve agent sarin on a small scale against rebel fighters.
If proved with certainty, the chemical weapons' usage could triggered unspecified U.S. actions against the Syrian government. Russia has been one of the Syrian government's staunchest allies.
"President Obama and President Putin reviewed the situation in Syria, with President Obama underscoring concern over Syrian chemical weapons," a White House statement said.
The two leaders agreed to stay in touch on the issue and that Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would continue discussions on Syria.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said the United States would proceed in a deliberate fashion in determining whether forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons to attack his own people.
Obama has vowed that all options will be considered if Syria is shown to have used chemical weapons but the White House is worried about the prospect of acting without definitive proof and aides say formulating a U.S. response will take time.
"It's very important that we take the information that's been gathered thus far and build upon it, because an assessment of varying degrees of confidence is not sufficient upon which to base a policy reaction," Carney said.
He said a U.N. team was ready to deploy to Syria in 24-48 hours to investigate chemical weapons allegations, if the Assad government let it in.

Things only got worse from there.

Gunmen surrounded Libya?s foreign ministry on Sunday demanding it be ?cleansed of agents? and ambassadors of ousted
dictator Moamer Kadhafi, an official said.
The group prevented staff from entering the building in Tripoli, said the ministry official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.
Around 30 vehicles, some mounted with anti-aircraft guns, and dozens of armed men surrounded the office, an AFP photographer at the scene reported.
The official criticised the group?s ?extremely offensive? behaviour, even if their demands were ?legitimate?, saying this did not justify ?paralysing the whole work of a ministry?.
The General National Congress, Libya?s highest political authority, is studying proposals for a law to exclude former Kadhafi regime officials from top government and political posts.
The proposed law could affect several senior figures in the government, and has caused waves in the country?s political class.
In March, demonstrators encircled the assembly, trapping members in the building for several hours as they called for the adoption of the law.
After the siege was lifted, gunmen targeted Congress chief Mohammed Megaryef?s motorcade without causing any casualties.
Libya?s government is struggling to assert its influence across the country, where Megaryef?s militias who fought Kadhafi in the 2011 uprising still countrol much territory.

Psychopaths' Brains Aren't Wired To Show Empathy, Study Finds
Psychopaths are unable to show empathy toward others because their brains aren't wired to do so, according to a new study in JAMA Psychiatry.
Researchers from the University of Chicago used brain imaging technology to find that psychopaths have less activation in certain parts of the brain and high activation in other parts of the brain, compared with people who are not psychopaths, in response to scenarios of people being purposely hurt.
Scientific American provides a good definition of a psychopath:
Superficially charming, psychopaths tend to make a good first impression on others and often strike observers as remarkably normal. Yet they are self-centered, dishonest and undependable, and at times they engage in irresponsible behavior for no apparent reason other than the sheer fun of it. Largely devoid of guilt, empathy and love, they have casual and callous interpersonal and romantic relationships.
In the new study, researchers conducted functional MRI brain imaging on 80 prisoners ages 18 to 50, all of whom had tests done to measure their levels of psychopathy. Then, they posed some scenarios of someone being hurt purposely, as well as had them watch videos of pained facial expressions.
Researchers found that those who scored higher on the psychopathy test experienced less activation in the amygdala, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, lateral orbitofrontal cortex, and periaqueductal gray brain regions, compared with those who scored lower on the test. Those who scored higher on the psychopathy test had more activation of the striatum and insula brain regions -- the insula brain region is known to play a role in emotion, researchers noted.
"This is the first time that neural processes associated with empathic processing have been directly examined in individuals with psychopathy, especially in response to the perception of other people in pain or distress," study researcher Jean Decety, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Chicago, said in a statement.
In the past, British researchers found that psychopaths actually have differences in their brain structure, compared with people who aren't psychopaths. A study published last year in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry and conducted on violent criminals in Britain showed that psychopaths have less gray matter in the anterior rostral prefrontal cortex brain region, Reuters reported.

Adobe Photoshop Touch (for iPhone)
Getting an app with many advanced features of its flagship Photoshop application onto a tablet seemed hard enough, but Adobe has gone a step further, taking the world's leading image editor to phones, with Photoshop Touch for iPhone ($4.99). It only makes sense to offer these capabilities on the iPhone, since that's become the primary point-and-shoot camera for many users, including me?despite the fact that I own a shiny new (but much bulkier) Canon EOS 6D.
If you're going to shoot and share the photo from the phone, why not have the ability to edit it effectively, too? Photoshop Touch brings a lot of?though obviously not all?familiar Photoshop tools and concepts, including layers, filters, and the beloved Magic Wand. But the iPhone version is not as powerful or usable as that for the iPad, which is only to be expected, given the smaller work area. It's also missing some expected tools like red-eye correction and photo leveling.
Interface
You get started by tapping the bottom center photo icon, which lets you choose form your camera roll, from Adobe's Creative Cloud online service, from shooting a new picture with your camera, or with a blank document. I missed the ability to open a Facebook photo, and I also missed all the helpful tutorials of the iPad app, but the first time through the interface, tool tip overlays explain what each button is for. The camera option doesn't offer any shooting tools like Camera+'s separate focus and exposure points and self-timer. Once you've got an image in to edit, you'll see four icons across the top. The first is for basic actions like selection and pasting, the second is for image adjustments, and the next two offer filters and advanced effects.
The bottom left icon is the tool selector: this popped up well-known Photoshop features like Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, and Magic Wand, along with selection and painting tools. If you need (just a little) more space, you can hide the top toolbar.
The coolest of this last group is the Scribble selection tool, which lets you finger-paint on a rough trace of the object in the photo you want to select and automagically your person or whatever other item you want is selected with a usually accurate outline. You use a green scribble to mark what you want to keep and red for what you don?t. The Refine Selection tool let me do just that after the rough scribble selection. One basic thing missing was a hand tool?it took me a while to figure out that the same two-finger input was used for this. And I'm not alone, several users have complained about the app's lack of a hand tool in the product forum
Basic Photo Edits
Photoshop Touch includes all the basic photo adjusters you'd expect from the imaging software leader: brightness and contrast, color saturation and temperature, and noise reduction. You also get more specific tonal adjustments for shadows, darks, and highlights. I like that these adjustments start in the middle and lets you slide down and up to darken or brighten the effect. You even get the more advance curves and levels tool, which lets you adjust using a histogram, and even by separate color channels. I was surprised not to find sharpening in the adustement tool set, but thankfully it was available in the FX tool set.
I could rotate my photo by 90 degrees or flip it, but I couldn't level or straighten images from this tool, which other photo apps offer. This seemed odd for an app that actually lets you "warp" your photo using several control points. You can use the Transform tool to rotate to a specific number of degrees, but that also rotates the image sides. Another tool I was surprised to see missing was red-eye reduction. You could of course go in and select pupils and replace colors, but red-eye is a basic correction that's in nearly every photo editor at every level.

Father of Boston bomb suspects to travel to U.S.
MAKHACHKALA, Russia (Reuters) - The father of two men suspected of carrying out the Boston bombings said on Thursday he would travel from Russia to the United States to bury his elder son.
"I am going to the United States. I want to say that I am going there to see my son, to bury the older one. I don't have any bad intentions. I don't plan to blow up anything," Anzor Tsarnaev told a news conference in Makhachkala, the capital of the restive region of Dagestan.
Banging the table as he spoke, he said: "I am not angry at anyone. I want to go find out the truth."
U.S. police say his two sons, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, planted and detonated two pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, killing three people and injuring 264.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed in a shootout with police four days later, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was wounded and captured after a manhunt. He is in a fair condition in hospital, U.S. officials have said.
Anzor Tsarnaev said he would leave for the Unites States as soon as possible but had not yet bought a ticket.
His wife, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, told the news conference she was also thinking of travelling to the United States but had not yet decided whether to go.

Cyber vulnerabilities found in Navy's newest warship: official

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The computer network on the U.S. Navy's newest class of coastal warships showed vulnerabilities in Navy cybersecurity tests, but the issues were not severe enough to prevent an eight-month deployment to Singapore, a Navy official said on Tuesday.
A Navy team of computer hacking experts found some deficiencies when assigned to try to penetrate the network of the USS Freedom, the lead vessel in the $37 billion Littoral Combat Ship program, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Freedom arrived in Singapore last week for an eight-month stay, which its builder, Lockheed Martin Corp., hopes will stimulate Asian demand for the fast, agile and stealthy ships.
"We do these types of inspections across the fleet to find individual vulnerabilities, as well as fleet-wide trends," said the official.
Cybersecurity is a major priority for the Navy, which relies heavily on communications and satellite networks for its weapons systems and situational awareness.
Defense Department spokeswoman Jennifer Elzea said the Pentagon's chief weapons test agency addressed "information assurance vulnerabilities" for the Littoral Combat Ship in an assessment provided to the Navy.
"The details of that assessment are classified," Elzea said.
Lockheed spokesman Keith Little said the company was working with the Navy to ensure that USS Freedom's networks were secure during the deployment.
The Navy plans to buy 52 of the new LCS warships in coming years, including some of Lockheed's steel monohull design and some of an aluminum-hulled LCS trimaran design built by Australia's Austal. The ships are designed for combat and other missions in shallower waters close to shore.
Freedom's first operational deployment was in the Caribbean Sea in 2010, where the ship participated in four drug transport busts and captured a total of five tons of cocaine.

Museum find proves exotic ?big cat? prowled British countryside a century ago
Apr. 23, 2013 ? The rediscovery of a mystery animal in a museum's underground storeroom proves that a non-native 'big cat' prowled the British countryside at the turn of the last century.
The animal's skeleton and mounted skin was analysed by a multi-disciplinary team of Durham University scientists and fellow researchers at Bristol, Southampton and Aberystwyth universities and found to be a Canadian lynx -- a carnivorous predator more than twice the size of a domestic cat.
The research, published today in the academic journal Historical Biology, establishes the animal as the earliest example of an "alien big cat" at large in the British countryside.
The research team say this provides further evidence for debunking a popular hypothesis that wild cats entered the British countryside following the introduction of the 1976 Wild Animals Act. The Act was introduced to deal with an increasing fashion for exotic -- and potentially dangerous -- pets.
The academics believe such feral "British big cats" as they are known, may have lived in the wild much earlier, through escapes and even deliberate release. There is no evidence that such animals have been able to breed in the wild.
The study of the Canadian lynx, rediscovered by research team member Max Blake among hundreds of thousands of specimens at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, details records unearthed at the museum which showed the animal had originally been mislabelled by Edwardian curators in 1903 as a Eurasian lynx -- a close relative of the Canadian lynx.
The records also showed that the lynx was shot by a landowner in the Devon countryside in the early 1900s, after it killed two dogs.
"This Edwardian feral lynx provides concrete evidence that although rare, exotic felids have occasionally been part of British fauna for more than a century," said lead researcher, Dr Ross Barnett of Durham University's Department of Archaeology.
"The animal remains are significant in representing the first historic big cat from Britain."
Co-author Dr Darren Naish, from the University of Southampton, added: "There have been enough sightings of exotic big cats which substantially pre-date 1976 to cast doubt on the idea that one piece of legislation made in 1976 explains all releases of these animals in the UK.
"It seems more likely that escapes and releases have occurred throughout history, and that this continual presence of aliens explains the 'British big cat' phenomenon."
The researchers point out in their paper that Eurasian lynxes existed in the wild in Britain many hundreds of years ago, but had almost certainly become extinct by the 7th century. Laboratory analysis of the Bristol specimen's bones and teeth established it had been kept in captivity long enough to develop severe tooth loss and plaque before it either escaped or was deliberately released into the wild. Ancient DNA analysis of hair from the lynx proved inconclusive, possibly due to chemicals applied to the pelt during taxidermy.
Julie Finch, head of Bristol's Museums, Galleries & Archives, said: "Bristol Museum, Galleries and Archives were pleased to be a part of this ground-breaking research, which not only highlights the importance of our science collections, it establishes the pedigree of our 100-year old Lynx and adds to our knowledge and understanding of 'big cats' in the UK.
"Our museum collections are extensive and caring for them requires the considerable skills of our collections officers. We have an amazing collection of taxidermy animals on display and we welcome museum visitors to come along, to take a closer look and discover more about the natural world."
Dr Greger Larson, a member of the research team from Durham University and an expert in the migration of animals, said: "Every few years there is another claim that big cats are living wild in Britain, but none of these claims have been substantiated. It seems that big cats are to England what the Loch Ness Monster is to Scotland.
"By applying a robust scientific methodology, this study conclusively demonstrates that at least one big cat did roam Britain as early as the Edwardian era, and suggests that additional claims need to be subjected to this level of scrutiny."
The lynx is now on public display at Bristol museum.

Track and Field Compete in Sea Relays | The Sentinel Newspaper ...

The KSU women?s track and field team finished in first place in the Sea Relays on April 13. The women?s 4?100 relay team performed at a very high level.
The 4?100 relay team is made up of Cynthia Davis, Alicia Whittle, Kentrell White and Hannah Wood. The team won the event for the fourth time in five meets this season and took home the title with?a top time of 45.59 while beating out Tennessee and Purdue.
Davis placed fourth in the 200m dash, and Wood achieved a personal best with a time of 24.15 in the same event.
The KSU men?s track and field team was very successful at the 200m event. Sadio Diallo narrowly missed finishing in first place by less than two-tenths of a second with a time of 21.27.
Sophomore Andre Dorsey finished third, and freshman Bilal Abdullah finished fifth in the high jump. Robert Darvey placed 12th in the discus with the fourth best toss (44.82 147- 00) in KSU history.
?Our teams performed really well this weekend,? said KSU head coach Andy Eggerth. ?They are at the most fatiguing part of the training year, and they just continue to break records. We will gradually unload the training throughout the championship season so we can definitely be ready to turn it up at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.?
The men?s and women?s track and field teams have two weeks to rest and prepare before they compete in the Samford Multi and Invitational III April 26-27
in Birmingham, Ala. finished in first place in the Sea Relays on April 13. The women?s 4?100 relay team performed at a very high level.

SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? An eight-story building housing several garment factories collapsed near Bangladesh's capital Wednesday morning, killing at least 87 people and trapping many more in a jumbled mess of shattered concrete and bricks, officials said.
The collapse stirred memories of a fatal fire at a garment factory in November that killed 112 people and raised an outcry about safety in the nation's $20 billion-a-year textile industry, which produces clothing for global fashion brands worn around the world.
Workers in the Rana Plaza building said it had developed such severe cracks the day before that it had been reported on local news channels. They hesitated to enter the building Wednesday morning, said Abdur Rahim, who worked in a garment factory on the fifth floor.
But a manager from the factory assured them there was no problem, so they went inside, he said.
"We started working. After about an hour or so the building collapsed suddenly," he said. He next remembered regaining consciousness outside the building.
Among the businesses in the building were Phantom Apparels Ltd., New Wave Style Ltd., New Wave Bottoms Ltd. and New Wave Brothers Ltd. garment factories, companies that make clothing for brands including Benetton, The Children's Place and Dress Barn. Workers said they didn't know what specific clothing brands were being made in the building because labels are attached after the products are finished.
Sumi, a 25-year-old worker who goes by one name, said she was sewing jeans on the fifth floor with at least 400 others when the building fell. "It collapsed all of a sudden," she said. "No shaking, no indication. It just collapsed on us."
She survived because she managed to reach a hole in the building through which rescuers pulled her out.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the site, some of them weeping survivors, some searching for family members. Firefighters and soldiers using drilling machines and cranes worked together with local volunteers in the search for other survivors.
An enormous section of the concrete structure appeared to have splintered like twigs. Colorful sheets of fabric were tied to upper floors of the wreckage, presumably so those inside could climb or slide down and escape.
An arm jutted out of one section of rubble. The lifeless body of a woman covered in dust could be seen in another. A firefighter carried the body of what appeared to be a teenager from the area.
Rahim said his mother and father, who worked with him in the factory, were trapped inside.
"I have no idea what is going on," he said.
Mosammat Khurshida wailed as she looked for her husband. "He came to work in the morning. I can't find him," she said. "I don't know where he is. He does not pick his phone. Oh Allah, what will I do now?"
In addition to the factories, the building also housed a bank and shops.
Zahidur Rahman, director of public relations at Enam Medical College and Hospital, said by Wednesday evening 87 people had been confirmed dead in the collapse at the building in the Dhaka suburb of Savar. Brig. Gen. Mohammed Siddiqul Alam Shikder said another 600 survivors had been rescued.
Reports indicated the death toll could rise.
"We had sent two people inside the building and we could rescue at least 20 people alive. They also told us that at least 100 to 150 people are injured and about 50 dead people are still trapped inside this floor," said Mohammad Humayun, a supervisor at one of the garment factories.
The collapse happened about 8:30 a.m. and since garment factories in the area routinely work 24 hours a day, it appeared likely that the four housed in the building were staffed at the time.
The November fire at the Tazreen garment factory drew international attention to the conditions workers toil under in Bangladesh's textile industry. The country has about 4,000 garment factories and exports clothes to leading Western retailers. The industry wields vast power in the South Asian nation.
Tazreen lacked emergency exits and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built. Surviving employees said gates had been locked and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off.
Clothes with Disney, Wal-Mart and other western labels were found at that factory.

BOSTON (AP) ? The Boston area held funerals for two more of its dead Tuesday ? including an 8-year-old boy ? as evidence mounted that the older Tsarnaev brother had embraced a radical, anti-American strain of Islam and was the driving force behind the Boston Marathon bombing.
Younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's condition was upgraded from serious to fair as investigators continued building their case against the 19-year-old college student.
He could face the death penalty after being charged Monday with joining forces with his brother, now dead, in setting off the shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs that killed three people.
In Washington, Senate Intelligence Committee member Richard Burr, R-N.C., said after his panel was briefed by federal law enforcement officials that there is "no question" that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was "the dominant force" behind the attacks, and that the brothers had apparently been radicalized by material on the Internet rather than by contact with militant groups overseas.
Martin Richard, a schoolboy from Boston's Dorchester neighborhood who was the youngest of those killed in the April 15 blasts at the marathon finish line, was laid to rest after a family-only funeral Mass.
"The outpouring of love and support over the last week has been tremendous," the family said in a statement. "This has been the most difficult week of our lives."
A funeral was also held for Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier, 26, who authorities said was shot to death by the Tsarnaev brothers three days after the bombing. A memorial service for Collier was scheduled for Wednesday at MIT, with Vice President Joe Biden expected to attend.
More than 260 people were injured by the bomb blasts. About 50 were still hospitalized.
Authorities believe neither brother had links to terror groups. However, two U.S. officials said Tuesday that Tamerlan Tsarnaev ? who died last week in a gunbattle ? frequently looked at extremist websites, including Inspire magazine, an English-language online publication produced by al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate. The magazine has endorsed lone-wolf terror attacks.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.
On Capitol Hill, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee were briefed by the FBI and other law enforcement officials at a closed-door session Tuesday evening.
Afterward, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., described the two brothers as "a couple of individuals who become radicalized using Internet sources."
"So we need to be prepared for Boston-type attacks, not just 9/11-style attacks," Rubio said, referring to lone-wolf terrorists as opposed to well-organized teams from established terror networks.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., said law enforcement officials have gotten "minimal" information from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and are still looking into whether the brothers had training or coaching from a foreign group.
The brothers' parents live in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim province in Russia's Caucasus, where Islamic militants have waged an insurgency against Russian security forces for years.
Family members reached in the U.S. and abroad by The Associated Press said Tamerlan was steered toward a strict strain of Islam under the influence of a Muslim convert known to the Tsarnaev family only as Misha.
After befriending Misha, Tamerlan gave up boxing, stopped studying music and began opposing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to family members, who said he turned to websites and literature claiming that the CIA was behind 9/11.
"Somehow, he just took his brain," said Tamerlan's uncle, Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., who recalled conversations with Tamerlan's worried father about Misha's influence.
"You could always hear his younger brother and sisters say, 'Tamerlan said this,' and 'Tamerlan said that.' Dzhokhar loved him. He would do whatever Tamerlan would say," recalled Elmirza Khozhugov, the ex-husband of Tamerlan's sister. He spoke by telephone from his home in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The brothers, who came to the U.S. from Russia a decade ago, were raised in a home that followed Sunni Islam, the religion's largest sect, but were not regulars at the mosque and rarely discussed religion, Khozhugov said.
Then, in 2008 or 2009, Tamerlan met Misha, a heavyset bald man with a reddish beard. Khozhugov didn't know where they met but believed they attended a Boston-area mosque together.
Hoping to learn more about the Tsarnaev brothers' motives, U.S. investigators traveled to southern Russia on Tuesday to speak to their parents, a U.S. Embassy official said.
A lawyer for the family, Zaurbek Sadakhanov, said the parents had just seen pictures of the mutilated body of their elder son and were not up to speaking with anyone.
In Massachusetts, the state House turned aside a bid by several lawmakers to reinstate the death penalty in certain cases, including the murder of police officers. In a 119-38 vote, the House sent the proposal to a study committee rather than advance it to an up-or-down vote.
In another development, April Walton, the manager of Phantom Fireworks of Seabrook, N.H., said Tamerlan Tsarnaev bought 48 mortar shells at the store in February.
Company Vice President William Weimer said FBI agents visited the store on Friday, interviewed staff and checked its computers. He said the amount of gunpowder that could be extracted from the fireworks would not have been enough for the Boston bombs.

Stocks mixed as major companies report earnings
NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are opening little changed on Wall Street as investors get ready for earnings news from major U.S. companies.
Nearly one-third of the 30 companies in the Dow Jones industrial average report first-quarter results this week.
In early trading Monday the Dow was off 19 points at 14,526, a decline of 0.1 percent.
The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index was up less than a point at 1,554, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq composite rose five points to 3,211, an increase of 0.2 percent.
Toy maker Hasbro and the energy company Halliburton turned in results that beat the forecasts of Wall Street analysts, and their stocks rose.
Caterpillar, a heavy equipment maker, slipped after reporting that a slowdown in the mining business hurt its results.

Feisty German minister stands up to Merkel

BERLIN (Reuters) - The political wilderness in Germany is filled with once-powerful conservative party barons, overly confident men who dared to challenge Angela Merkel and lost.
But never before has the German chancellor had to contend with another woman, a popular member of her own cabinet, standing up to her in public in the way Labour Minister Ursula von der Leyen did last week.
The 54-year-old von der Leyen forced Merkel to retreat on, of all things, women's rights in a riveting public showdown just five months before an election.
"It's like von der Leyen threw a stick of dynamite into the coalition," said Gero Neugebauer, political scientist at Berlin's Free University. "You have to go back to the 1970s to find a minister who stood up to a chancellor. She made Merkel look weak."
Political analysts, conservative party members and German voters are now watching to see if there will be any fallout.
Most believe that von der Leyen, who regularly polls among the most popular politicians in Germany, remains too important to Merkel and the party to dump, especially with the election looming. The showdown may burnish von der Leyen's image among some voters, even if it has infuriated conservatives in the ruling Christian Democrats (CDU).
Just one year ago, Merkel summarily fired her Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen after he bungled an important regional election. Over the past decade, she has found ways to neutralize other potential rivals, from former CDU parliamentary leader Friedrich Merz to state premiers Roland Koch, Guenther Oettinger and Christian Wulff.
Von der Leyen, a trained gynaecologist, has a history of pushing her party towards the political centre even if it means poaching ideas from the left-leaning Social Democrats (SPD).
Her popularity stems from her engaging speaking style, down-to-earth manner and the determined way in which she's pushed her issues, notably a drive to create more childcare facilities in a country of stay-at-home mothers.
Still, her threat last week to break ranks and back an opposition bill to establish quotas for women on company boards was seen as an act of betrayal in some conservative circles.
MOTHER OF SEVEN
A mother of seven who was born in Brussels and lived in Britain and the United States, von der Leyen grew up surrounded by politics. Her father, Ernst Albrecht, was a CDU state premier for Lower Saxony from 1976 to 1990.
She is a rarity in German politics in that she came to the game late, when she was 42, following a career in medicine.
Von der Leyen speaks fluent English and French. She studied at the London School of Economics from 1977 to 1980, but used the pseudonym "Rose Ladson" due to concerns she might be targeted, as the daughter of a prominent politician, by left-wing guerrillas who were active in West Germany at the time.
She graduated from medical school in 1987 and worked as a physician until 1992. While raising her fast-growing family, she lived in California from 1992 to 1996 while her husband Heiko taught at Stanford University. She met him at a university choir in Goettingen.
Von der Leyen is resented by some for seeming too perfect. She was once hoisted out of a barrel on German entertainment TV by Hugh Jackman and kissed by George Clooney after handing him an award for promoting peace.
She is admired by others for her ability to juggle a demanding career and family, while skillfully representing Germany on her frequent trips abroad.
"Von der Leyen can go to Harvard or the Sorbonne and give big speeches in English and French," said Markus Kerber, managing director of the BDI industry association, who knows her well. "For me she represents a new generation of Germans who can communicate internationally."
In 2003 she was elected to the Lower Saxony state assembly and in 2005 Merkel picked her as her family minister.
AFTER MERKEL
Von der Leyen quickly made it clear she was not going to be a token mum in the cabinet - Merkel and then-Education Minister Annette Schavan had no children.
In a bid to counter Germany's low birth rate, she co-opted an SPD proposal to introduce paid parental leave for working parents, a move which angered party conservatives.
She has tried to change German attitudes towards children, clouded as they are by the Nazi campaign to encourage procreation.
"In the United States people would say 'Oh, seven children, you are so blessed," von der Leyen told Reuters in 2005. But in Germany the reaction was: "Seven children and a job - how are you going to manage that?"
How does she manage it?
Good planning is the key, she says. Unlike many other German politicians, she is rarely seen socializing in Berlin, preferring instead to spend weekends at home in Lower Saxony with her family.
She doesn't have a flat in the German capital, instead sleeping in a small ministry room with a bed and shower.
Many men have learned the hard way not to underestimate Merkel. The same may be said for von der Leyen, who stands just 1.61 meters tall (5 foot 3 inches).
In the recent standoff over female quotas, Merkel deputies, led by parliamentary floor leader Volker Kauder, managed to pressure von der Leyen to back down. But only after she and her fellow rebels extracted from the party a promise to include a quota in its election program.
"Von der Leyen showed in this debate that she is ready to fight for what she wants," one close ally of Merkel said. "But she also showed that she doesn't understand her party, that she isn't on the same page as the majority of her CDU colleagues."
Still, political scientist Hans Vorlaender of the Technical University in Dresden, says it would be wrong to count von der Leyen out.
"The CDU is a party that is above all interested in staying in power," he said. "If after Merkel is gone it turns out von der Leyen is seen as their best option to win power, she'll be their candidate."
