A superb quintet of older actors give the simple tale of A Foreign Field a rich and resonant texture. Amos (Alec Guiness, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Star Wars) and Cyril (Leo McKern, Rumpole of the Bailey) are two British Planet War II veterans who return to the beaches of Normandy, where they?d come ashore nearly 50 years earlier. They run into an American veteran named Waldo (John Randolph, Prizzi?s Honor) and a woman named Lisa (Lauren Bacall, The Huge Sleep, Dogville) whose brother died on D-Day. Waldo and Cyril have both come seeking the same woman who comforted them when they were wounded?but when they find her (Jeanne Moreau, Jules and Jim, La Femme Nikita), she?s not what they remember. Nothing dramatic happens in A Foreign Film?the characters bicker, become acquaintances, and go to graveyards?but in the hands of this group of fantastic talents, small emotional moments seem full and rewarding. This is a sweet and gentle movie that carefully avoids any saccharine sentiment. Also featuring Geraldine Chaplin (Nashville, Talk to Her) and Edward Herrmann (The Cat?s Meow, The Paper Chase). ?Bret Fetzer

Two British war vets (Alec Guinness and Leo McKern) meet an American vet (John Randolph) when all three return to Normandy on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Ancient rivalries resurface, particularly when two of the men learn they are searching for the same lost like (Jeanne Moreau). A lonely woman (Lauren Bacall) with her own painful but mysterious memories joins the group, while the American vet?s petulant daughter (Geraldine Chaplin) and bumbling son-in-law (Edward Herrmann) struggle to keep up with the exploits of their elders. This disparate band of survivors eventually finds common impose a curfew in the memory of what they lost on that ominous day in 1944. As seen on Masterpiece Theatre.

5Movie Perfection
By Stephen Jordan
It is truly a shame that this movie is largely unknown, because it is one of the finer movies I have ever watched. The acting is incredible, and the characters play off of each other brilliantly. I have told others about the movie, and have to warn them that if they are looking for lots of explosions, blood, and guts, that this is not the movie for them. Unfortunately, we have come to expect and even crave that in a war movie. What makes A Foreign Field so fantastic is the fact that the noise and bloodshed are long over, and the movie focuses instead on the memories and core emotions that veterans and their loved ones feel when reflecting on a different time. It is a fantastic movie to watch on Veteran?s Day or Memorial Day every year.

5A fantastic way to say goodbye to Obi-Wan & Rumpole
By Nagronsky
I knew nothing about ?A Foreign Field? until I saw a bio of Sir Alec Guinness. Growing up lucky sufficient to be exposed to Sir Alec?s Ealing comedies, I felt I should try to score this. Not to bring up the fact that the movie co-starred the late, fantastic Leo McKern. I found a used copy via Amazon, & though the ex-rental tape doesn?t track well, I?m not disappointed in the least. Sir Alec & McKern described ancient comrades returning to Normandy. McKern is right out front, as an irascible, less than charming Rumpolesque figure. Sir Alec?s character, Amos, is ?retarded?, but though we suspect war wounds, we don?t get any info along this line until late in the film. The rest of the ensemble cast works amazingly well, even Geraldine Chaplin, who has grated on me in everything since Dr. Zhivago. FDR, defense me, Edward Herrman, is very excellent, as are Lauren Bacall, Jeanne Moreau, and John Randolph. The moving look at the return of ancient soldiers to ?a foreign field? behind Sword or Juno beach is reminiscent of ex-private James Ryan visiting Capt James Miller?s gravesite in ?Saving Private Ryan?. I don?t know, but I reckon Sir Alec Guinness was very ill when this was filmed. He says very few words, but his subdued, nearly delicate Amos says volumes without verbalizing. This is one that must be brought out on DVD, and just to keep things entire, I give ?A Foreign Field? 5 stars.

Second-gen IOIO in the works: embraces the wireless revolution, cuts cost

Second-gen IOIO in the works, embraces the wireless revolution

Ytai Ben-Tsvi's IOIO board is quite the hit with the Android-hacking DIY crowd. But, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement on the $50 dev board. A second-gen version is in the works that adds the ability to connect to a computer as a USB device (not just as a host) or via Bluetooth, without the need for a intermediary controller like an Arduino. Perhaps most exciting for those interested in tinkering with DIY Android phone accessories, is the plan to cut the price of the new IOIO. How much less the next version will cost isn't clear yet, but even just $5 could make a major difference. For more details check out Ytai's blog post at the source link.

How does business to business advertising differ from business to ...

Business advertising between companies differs tremendously between business advertising between a company and individuals. Like in any writing or communication, the intended recipient of the advertisement determines everything about the style of the message. Voice, word choice, imaging, included details, presentation? the tools that are used may be similar, the point of the message may be similar, but the voice and the tenor needs to change in radical ways.

First of all in b2b advertising you are advertising a product that the business wants to buy, that they need. Consumer advertising involves persuading them that they should try it , that they want it, that they need it. B2b on the other hand deals with a target who is well aware, they?re just looking for the best option to meet their needs. In fact, most of the time you are dealing with a purchasing agent, someone whose entire job it is to decide what to buy, what product or service they are best off in investing in.

Secondly business buyers are sophisticated, intelligent. They know what they need and you need to present yourself as the best. No gimmicks, no games. Even the way you capture human interest needs to be different. Logic and authority need to trump novelty or emotion.

The buyer will need a lot of copy. Whereas consumers need three bullet points top and a paragraph if they want to research, a business will want your entire manual and warranty before they even think of buying. Be prepared, have your product or service set up deep accordingly.

'Like' this: Salutes to troops to flood Facebook feeds

Memorial Day is not just unforgettable: Thanks to Facebook it's also inescapable.

Salutes to troops past and present will be showing up every few seconds, this weekend, if the pace of posting is anything like Memorial Day 2011. Experts and everyday Facebook users say the social media Goliath has rearranged our thinking of how to mark this and every other holiday.

"The pressure is on to show you remember the birthday or national holiday, that you're not the bad friend or the bad daughter who forgot," says Sara Linton, 28, of Oakland.

Linton says she'll soon post an image of one of her most precious possessions, a framed letter from her grandfather, Ted Linton, to his wife, her grandmother Thora, on VJ Day in 1945.

"I'm proud we get to honor people and remember what they did," Linton says. "Posting something unique and real makes Facebook less superficial."

Vets and families of vets, we want you! Tweet us your memories, photos that show how military service has affected you: #uswarstories

Facebook holiday posts are a contagious phenomenon, encouraging users to mark every celebratory moment on line. "Likes" for Facebook's own flag-emblazoned Memorial Day page passed 102,000 by this week.

It's about the urge to be known, just like getting a tattoo or putting a bumper sticker on the car or running up the flag in front of the house on Monday, says Sam Gosling, a psychology professor at University of Texas, Austin, and author of Snoop: What your stuff says about you.

Sara Linton

Sara Linton plans to post to Facebook an image of one of her most precious possessions, a framed letter from her grandfather, Ted Linton, to his wife, her grandmother Thora, on VJ Day in 1945.

These are all "symbolic acts ? part of identity claiming, of saying to the world, 'This is who I am.' "

Ed Reiman presents his Facebook and Twitter identity as a husband, a grandfather and a retired businessman in Portland, Ore., and ? perhaps, most telling of all ? as a Vietnam Veteran who came home, crippled by post traumatic stress syndrome, on July 4, 1968.

Steve Barnhoorn

Steve Barnhoorn plans to post a picture of his great-grandfather Benjamin Pennington to Facebook over Memorial Day weekend.

Reiman, 65, tweeted at #USWarstories this week: "Was in Vietnam in the Army ? '67/'68 ? thru "Tet" ? survived ? think about it and friends I lost there everyday, but have lived well, raised a family ? have 'grands' ? and am now retired. I am blessed."

He has mixed feelings about the outpouring of Memorial Day posts on Facebook.

"I appreciate it. I think most folks are sincere. But I also think some people are trying to get rid of their own guilt for not speaking up sooner against the Vietnam War or for turning a cold shoulder to those veterans for 20 or 30 years," Reiman says.

He says he'll post this weekend on Facebook about "my pride in the people I knew and served beside."

Few Americans still mark the original way to celebrate Memorial Day with a visit to a veteran's grave. The Department of Veterans Affairs predicts more than 100,000 visitors to National Cemeteries this Monday, about the same as 2011. But there are 117 events for real time visits listed on the National Cemeteries Facebook Page, which has 3,389 likes.

Social media aren't necessarily to blame for the shift in observance. Given the mobile society, few people live near their own loved ones' graves any more.

" 'Local' is different now. Social media mean local is your computer, not your city," says Barbara Kemmis, executive director of the Cremation Association of North America.

So Steve Barnhoorn, 49, of Honeoye, N.Y, is a 'local' neighbor, one who invites you over to his place ? on Facebook ? to see his posts on veterans he reveres.

This weekend, watch for his post on his maternal great-grandfather Benjamin Pennington, who was "gassed in action" and wounded by enemy fire in World War I, and survived to be decorated with the Purple Heart.

Ever since Barnhoorn joined Facebook in 2009, he's posted for Veterans Day, and Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, too. That's when he posts a photo of his great-grand-uncle Earl Frary, who was serving aboard the USS Vestal when the Japanese bombs rained down.

"The world should know about these great people. I get all kinds of positive comments back. People say, 'Wow, I didn't know you had that personal tie to history,' " Barnhoorn says.

For those who need help crafting creative forms of gratitude on Facebook holidays, fear not. There are apps for that. The site also offer 13 apps for showing appreciation for Father's Day, from Instagram-ing childhood photos of Pop, to a video I-love-you via Viddy.

For Memorial Day, those who don't have grandpa's World War II snapshots or inspiring letters can draw on free illustrations from sites such as Satisfaction.com. It features 10 choices from a red-white-and-blue eagle flapping its wings to a bikini-busting beauty straddling a tank gun barrel.

Facebook posts also remind folks that partying and shopping are almost holiday duties.

AllFacebook, an unofficial Facebook blog from Web Media Brands, noted just days before Memorial Day last year, posts mentioning the holiday were chiefly invitations to barbecues and parties or pitches to shop holiday sales.

Blogger Jackie Cohen observed, "Only the occasional post addresses the fact that the holiday honors those who've died in military service," and only 20% of Americans knew the original purpose of the day.

Facebook holiday mentions roughly double every year in posts by the 500 largest public branded corporate pages (the ones with the most Facebook fans), according to Socialbakers, a media analytics company.

In 2012, there was a 73% jump in branded pages that wished folks Happy Mother's Day. Of all the branded paged with posts on Facebook that day, about 25% made a holiday mention.

On Memorial Day 2011, roughly one in four of the 185 posts that day on commercially branded pages made mention of the holiday.

"We expect that this Memorial Day brands will be commenting on the holiday more than they ever have in the past," says Socialbakers' CEO Jan Rezab.

Yet, the old-fashioned way of celebrating with a greeting card is undiminished by the competition from social media, says Jaci Twidwell, a spokeswoman for Hallmark Cards.

The urge to share runs on parallel tracks. Even as holiday wishes soar on line, people are still exchanging cards at the rate of 13 million a day, Twidwell says.

"Electronic communications are better for sharing information, but greeting cards are better for sharing emotion," Twidwell says. "You can't put a Facebook post in the shoebox under your bed. It doesn't replace the pleasure of getting something tangible in the mailbox. What Facebook has done is give us more options."

Rest assured, on the word of Emily Post's great-great-granddaughter and etiquette authority Anna Post. She says there's nothing rude about posting holiday greetings, "as long as you spend time off line with the people who matter most."

Pet tube keeps dogs safe when traveling

The Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching and thus begins the unofficial ?kick off to summer!? With millions of dog moms and dads expected to be taking to the highways of America, Canada, and well, everywhere over these next few months, one aspect comes to the forefront: pet travel safety.

In their recent summer travel survey, PetRelocation.com reported that 47 percent of respondents shared they will be traveling with their pets in the next three months. Hopefully, these dogs are buckling, belting, or kenneling up. In recent years, I?ve become aware of how important it is to keep a dog safe and secure in a car. Did you know that a a 10 pound dog could be thrown with more than 80 pounds of force if unrestrained? It ain?t pretty, folks.? I?m using a Kurgo harness for my dog, Dexter, and recently found out about another option from Petego: The Pet Tube.

Our special guest reviewer, Karen Meyering, dog mom to two Cocker Spaniels who travel frequently with her, provided this report of her experience with the Petego Pet Tube.?

?Wanna go bye-bye?? Every dog owner knows that asking that simple question will lead to a stampede to the car.? My two Cocker Spaniels love to go everywhere I go.? Being a responsible and loving dog mom, I want to make sure they are safe in the car.? However, I found it very difficult to find a product that kept my dogs secure and comfortable.? My small sedan doesn?t have enough back seat space for two crates.? I tried several brands of seat belt harnesses, but one of my dogs was very uncomfortable in the harness and the other put Houdini to shame with her escape antics.

Enter the Pet Tube Car Kennel from Petego.? The Pet Tube is a strong, yet adaptable fabric kennel that comes in two sizes.? The tube is flexible and expands to the size you need to fit your vehicle and your pets. The tube attaches to the seat of the car, making it secure and preventing your pet from running about the vehicle.? One of the best features is the zip up ends that keeps your pets in the car until you are ready to take them out.? No more door dashing!? Strong mesh allows your pets to look out the window and to see you in the car with them.

Gracie and Roxy ready for a road trip

Installation of the Pet Tube took about ten minutes.? I placed a blanket and two small dog beds in the tube and of course added a few favorite toys.? My dogs adapted to the tube immediately.? They now have their own cozy spot and I no longer feel guilty about them riding loose in the car.

If you are a pet parent who is looking for a protective and comfortable alternative to crates and harnesses, try the Pet Tube.? Car rides can be fun again!?

More information about the Pet Tube can be found at www.petego.com.? The Pet Tube is sold on many popular pet supply websites and Amazon.

Note: We accept no monetary compensation for reviews. Review is NOT sponsored by Petego and is the sole opinion of the reviewer for Fidose of Reality.? We welcome your feedback and comments.

Religion Plays Strong Role in Gay Unions - Politics

I found this article from 2008, and it is still relevant today even more.......

LiveScience Staff

Date: 30 July 2008 Time: 11:50 AM ET

?Gay and lesbian couples with children and strong religious beliefs are more likely than their peers to hold commitment ceremonies, a new study shows.
"Opponents of relationship recognition for same-sex couples often say that we have to protect children, or that same-sex relationships are against God," said researcher Ramona Faith Oswald of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "But this study suggests that lesbians and gay men who seek relationship recognition may be acting to protect their children and enact their own religious beliefs."
Oswald and her colleagues surveyed 190 individuals who were cohabiting with a same-sex partner in Illinois, including some who had legalized aspects of their relationship by making a will or granting power of attorney to their partner.
Length of relationship was the strongest predictor that a couple would legalize their relationship. Yet same-sex couples who legalized their unions also tended to belong to supportive religious congregations more so than non-legalizing cohabiters. "Faith communities may be important sources of legal education and advocacy for same-sex couples," Oswald said.
Of those couples who had legalized their partnerships, a small group Oswald refers to as ritualizers had taken it a step further and participated in a commitment ceremony (similar to a wedding).
Gay marriage is illegal in Illinois, as it is in every other U.S. state except California and Massachusetts. But same-sex couples do have the option of organizing a celebration of their relationship, sometimes referred to as a commitment ceremony. Like wedding ceremonies and receptions, a commitment ceremony can range from an huge event with hundreds of guests and wedding gowns to a simple ritual to bless the relationship to a casual party.
Partners who had children and identified religious beliefs as being very important in their daily lives were more likely than others who had legalized their partnership to ritualize their relationships. (Most children in this study were teenagers at the time of the commitment ceremonies and were from partners' previous relationships.)
Mothers and fathers were more than three times more likely to have celebrated their unions with a commitment ceremony than gay men or lesbians who lived together and had legalized their relationship but had not been part of a commitment ritual.
"Couples may be using commitment rituals to build cohesion within stepfamilies as the role of gay and lesbian stepparents is often vague," Oswald said. "Such ceremonies may help couples validate their sense of belonging and obligation to each other while also demonstrating to friends and relatives that they are a family unit."
With the Religious Freedom and Protections Civil Unions Act under consideration in the Illinois House of Representatives, which would allow two lesbians or gay men to form a civil union if they meet certain criteria such as not being related by adoption or blood, Oswald said she hopes this study will help to explain the motivations of gay and lesbian couples who wish to obtain civil unions.
The study was published in the June issue of the Journal of Family Psychology.

Health Safety When Using Machines and Power Tools

Machines can hurt people. They need to be constructed correctly to be safe for the workers who handle them or even just passing by. All too often, a worker is pulled into a machine such as a conveyor belt, a grinder or a crusher.

The major machines in a crushing unit are the primary and secondary crusher, the conveyer belt, and the sorters.

Small 'machines' such as power tools can also be dangerous if they are not properly maintained and repaired if broken.

Common unsafe conditions or acts

1.No guards are installed around the crusher?s moving parts, nip points, flywheels, conveyor drives, etc. to prevent clothing being pulled into the machine

2.No emergency switch for the conveyor belt or the crushers is installed to stop them if a worker is pulled into them

3.Workers are wearing loose clothing which can easily be caught and pulled into a machine

4.Conveyors are not periodically inspected and tested

5.Workers are not properly trained in safe procedures to protect themselves from making mistakes

6.Movable conveyors are often in unstable positions

7.No personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided to workers (see also the other chapter here in this manual), especially during maintenance and cleaning work As the professional manufacturer of complete sets of mining machinery, such as stone crushing plant, Henan Hongxing is always doing the best in products and service.

8.Hand tools are in poor condition and not properly repaired when broken

Solutions to protect health

1.

Train employees on safe work methods, avoid wearing loose clothing when working near moving machinery and conveyors

2. Working near conveyors and moving machinery should be avoided as much as possible

3. Install machine guards that are needed on and around all moving parts

4. Repair and maintain all hand and power tools

5. Only work with power tools when they are connected to a circuit, which is protected by an

6. ELCB interrupter (see chapter on 'Working Safely with Electricity')

7. Use a so-called 'Lock out ? Tag out' system for safe locking of power sources, so that no one can accidentally switch on the machine while others are working on it

8. Emergency shut-down switches should be installed for all machines in the crushing unit; train workers in their use

9. Avoid unauthorized operation and entry by using a 'work permit system' for contractors, which tells them what to do and how to protect themselves and the other workers?raymond mill:http://www.hxjq-crusher.com/11.html

Preparing Your Masters In Criminal Justice Application | Self Help ...

Masters in Criminal Justice

Students of the Masters in Criminal Justice course are facing a rich and exciting set of job prospects after graduation. The aim of the classes in the program is to foster the required talents for anyone working in a criminal justice-related occupation. Before you get too eager, however, take a look first at the requests of the program when it comes to admitting students into its fold.

You cannot expect different institutions to request the same things of those applying. Most of the time, application needs are determined by the course characteristics, so be sure to think on that. For example, if you pick a fast-track course instead of a regular one, you are likely going to be asked to produce different documents and school scores.

Proof of having finished a bachelor?s course is naturally required. Those who have not completed a bachelor?s degree are not permitted to enter a master?s class. It doesn?t have to be in the field of Criminal Justice but it would indeed be helpful.?

Majority of the schools offering the course demand a GRE score. Minimum scores are dependent on the colleges themselves. Note that your GRE can only be considered if it was taken within five years? time of your application.

For international students, you would be expected to submit your scores on TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language.? This would evaluate your competency on the English language in an academic setting.? Scores for this exam can also expire, so make sure yours are still valid.

The next step to fulfill are letters of recommendations from individuals who can vouch for your ability to manage graduate studies.? From old professors to your supervisors at work, you can pick those who know you best to do the LOR. The number of letters required is dependent on the college you are applying to.

Another thing asked of applicants is the transcript from their bachelor?s course. You should cover this step ahead of time by ordering the transcript early. Remember that there are some schools that ask for copies of diplomas too, so take a look at that.

Be sure that your application has been filled out properly. Internet applicants often do not need to submit an application fee, although there are exceptions. A properly filled-out form is essential to your chances of being accepted, so handle the form with care.

You shall generally be required to compose something that tells the admissions committee why you should be admitted to their program. A personal interview is often part of the requirements for admission. Some universities give preferential treatment to applications that boast of a lot of experience in the sector.

Future career in this line are satisfying but difficult. Your application is going to be the first hurdle on the way. This rather simple undertaking can then help you think about your intentions and motivations before you submit your application for a Masters in Criminal Justice.?

Screening for Lung Cancer Might Benefit Those at Highest Risk

SUNDAY, May 20 (HealthDay News) -- Using low-dose CT scans to screen for lung cancer might save the lives of patients at the greatest risk for the disease, a new analysis suggests.

However, the risks of screening for others aren't clear, the researchers added.

"We have insight into risks, but they are hard to weigh and estimate," said lead researcher Dr. Peter Bach, from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

"It's clear that when you screen you find cancers that otherwise wouldn't appear, and that leads to overtreatment," he said. "It is clear that CTs find lots of things that aren't cancer. About one in five people have something found that will require some sort of follow-up."

There is also an excess radiation risk. In one trial, screening prevented about three deaths per 1,000 people screened, while one in 2,500 might develop cancer from the CT scan, Bach said.

However, in the right population it could theoretically prevent thousands of deaths a year, he explained.

Namely, that population is the heaviest smokers, those who smoke for 30 pack-years or more. A pack-year is the number of cigarettes smoked over time. This means at least a pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years.

"For these patients, we recommend that doctors might suggest screening and discuss the risks and benefits," Bach said. "But, no one should be telling people that they must have this test or advertise that it's a lifesaving procedure that will prevent you from dying from lung cancer."

In the end, "there is no substitution for smoking cessation in terms of health benefits," Bach noted.

The report was published online May 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

For the study, Bach's team reviewed 21 studies about the benefits and risks of low-dose CT screening for lung cancer.

One of the studies, the National Lung Screening Trial, included more than 53,000 people and found that screening reduced deaths from lung cancer by 20 percent, the researchers said.

The results of that trial were published last June in the New England Journal of Medicine.

However, the other, smaller trials found no benefit from screening, Bach's team noted.

The study authors found that, overall, 20 percent of patients had a scan that needed follow-up, but only 1 percent had lung cancer.

The studies were done in teaching hospitals with experienced radiologists and cancer doctors, Bach noted.

This report is the basis of the screening recommendations adopted by the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The recommendations state that heavy smokers aged 55 to 74, and those who have quit in the past 15 years, should be offered screening.

But screening should only be done at hospitals that do a lot of this kind of screening. These are usually large or teaching hospitals, because the value of this screening at community hospitals is not known, Bach added.

Dr. Norman Edelman, chief medical officer at the American Lung Association, called the new study a "thoughtful analysis of an important topic."

The American Lung Association conducted a similar review and came to similar conclusions, he said.

The data suggest that screening heavy smokers is likely to reduce death from lung cancer by about 20 percent and all-cause mortality by about 10 percent, he said.

"Given the large cohort to which it pertains, this would be a significant public health achievement," Edelman stated.

However, there remain many unsettled issues, he said.

"One major issue is whether the same results would be observed in the community as opposed to the controlled academic settings in which the study was done," Edelman said. "Accordingly, the American Lung Association report emphasizes the need for screening to be done in centers which can provide low-dose CT screening and a comprehensive multi-specialty environment, so that finding of suspect nodules can be followed up with appropriate [care] rather than undue risk."

Robert Smith, director of cancer screening at the American Cancer Society, said, "These recommendations are consistent" with screening guidelines from similar medical groups.

However, he believes these guidelines will be refined over the years as new data become available.

"The question remains, who else might you endorse lung cancer screening for," Smith said. "Suppose someone had a 35 pack/year history and they were 35 years old, or what if they were 45 years old and had started smoking at the age of 12."

There may be other levels of risk where screening might be beneficial, Smith said: "We will probably learn a lot from trials that are currently under way."

Millions look skyward as eclipse crosses Asia, US

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Millions in Asia and the western United States watched as a rare "ring of fire" eclipse crossed their skies.

The annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges, was visible to wide areas across Asia early Monday. It then moved across the Pacific and was also seen in parts of the western United States Sunday afternoon.

Viewing parties were held in Reno, Nev., Oakland, Calif., and elsewhere. In some parts of the U.S., special camera filters for taking photographs have been sold out for weeks in anticipation of the big event.

People from Colorado, Oklahoma and as far away as Canada traveled to Albuquerque to enjoy one of the best vantage points.

Members of the crowd smiled and cheered and children yelled with excitement as the moon crossed the sun and the blazing halo of light began to form. Eventually, the moon centered and covered 96 percent of the sun.

"That's got to be the prettiest thing I've ever seen," said Brent Veltri of Salida, Colo.

Albuquerque city officials had urged residents to go to organized events or watch one of the many live webcasts to avoid damaging their eyes.

The eclipse cannot be viewed with the naked eye or even sunglasses. And solar glasses, which make the sun look like a huge orange disc, are a rare commodity in communities along the eclipse's path.

In Japan, "eclipse tours" were arranged at schools and parks, on pleasure boats and even private airplanes. Similar events were held in China and Taiwan as well, with skywatchers warned to protect their eyes.

The eclipse was broadcast live on TV in Tokyo, where such an eclipse hasn't been visible since 1839. Japanese TV crews watched from the top of Mount Fuji and even staked out a zoo south of Tokyo to capture the reaction of the chimpanzees ? who didn't seem to notice.

A light rain fell on Tokyo as the eclipse began, but the clouds thinned as it reached its peak, providing near perfect conditions.

"It was a very mysterious sight," said Kaori Sasaki, who joined a crowd in downtown Tokyo to watch event. "I've never seen anything like it."

At the Taipei Astronomical Museum in Taiwan, the spectacle emerged from dark clouds for only about 30 seconds. But the view was nearly perfect against Manila's orange skies.

"It's amazing. We do this for the awe (and) it has not disappointed. I am awed, literally floored," said astronomical hobbyist Garry Andreassen, whose long camera lenses were lined up with those of about 10 other gazers in a downtown Manila park.

Hong Kong skywatchers weren't so lucky.

Several hundred people gathered along the Kowloon waterfront on Hong Kong's famed Victoria Harbor, most of them students or commuters on their way to work. The eclipse was already underway as the sun began to rise, but heavy clouds obstructed the view.

The eclipse followed a narrow 8,500-mile path for 3 1/2 hours. The ring phenomenon lasted about five minutes, depending on location. People outside the narrow band for prime viewing saw a partial eclipse.

"Ring of Fire" eclipses are not as dramatic as a total eclipse, when the disk of the sun is entirely blocked by the moon. The moon is too far from Earth and appears too small in the sky to blot out the sun completely.

Doctors and education officials have warned of eye injuries from improper viewing. Before the event started, Japan's Education Minister Hirofumi Hirano demonstrated how to use eclipse glasses in a televised news conference.

Police also cautioned against traffic accidents ? warning drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

The Growing Epidemic of Obesity in Children and Teens | Honest ...

The nature of many weight-related health conditions involves the element of time. This is a fancy way of saying that the bad symptoms dont start showing up right away?they take a while to become apparent. Of course, the stage is definitely set and things are set in motion during the early years when a child suffers from obesity. Even so, children will tend to have fewer medical problems due to obesity because they are young. But the condition in and of itself is definitely a risk factor for later on when adult sized conditions and problems develop. Some of the more severe consequences include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and liver disease.

High blood pressure and hypertension are pretty much synonymous with obesity no matter how old a person is. Some of the more severe medical problems arent as likely to show up as a part of childhood obesity while others are a lot more likely to surface. High blood pressure is one of them, and it is commonly diagnosed in younger people who are significantly overweight or obese. Not only is there physical stress put on the body from the extra weight; there is intense psychological stress as well. Kids who are obese are forced to endure both physical and verbal abuse from peers. It build and builds and becomes a very stressful situation for the child which then leads to high blood pressure. Research has been conducted everywhere that confirms that obstructive sleep apnea is a lot more widespread in children and teens who are obese. This specific condition is quite serious because what happens is that the childs airway gets blocked when he or she is asleep. Kids who are overweight and obese are more likely to snore too but, according to researchers, that is actually deceiving. Sometimes kids snore because they have what is called OSA or obstructive sleep apnea. The adenotonsillectomy is one possible solution to the problem of sleep apnea in children and teens who are obese.

Science is still trying to puzzle out whether or not early onset obesity has a direct relationship with early onset puberty. However, there is a certain amount of common sense looking at what is known. For example, it is known that obese and overweight children grow at a faster rate, and they do enter puberty earlier. It is still a situation, however, in which causality needs to be more definitely defined. While this is obviously not that serious a threat as the other obesity related problems, there are definitely serious implications that accompany abnormally young ages for the onset of puberty.

Obviously, by the time they have reached this condition, these kids are at a tremendous social and physical disadvantage. We all know how hard it is to lose weight and that you have to be very determined and have lots of support to do it. Friends and parents need to be as supportive as possible. Kids and young adults are resilient and have an easier time bouncing back once a healthy direction has been taken. But of course the clincher is whether or not the children already suffer from any major medical conditions.

Sudan army frees captured UN deminers

Four UN deminers arrested by the Sudanese army along the country's tense southern border were released Sunday and turned over to chief African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki, the defence minister said.

"We release them to president Mbeki," Abdelrahim Mohammed Hussein said in a ceremony at Sudan's military headquarters in Khartoum, more than three weeks after the men were detained.

The former South African president has been in the Sudanese capital since Thursday meeting officials, including President Omar al-Bashir, in an effort to push Sudan and South Sudan back to negotiations which were suspended after border fighting last month.

"I raised your issue with President Bashir and the government explained to us the circumstances of your arrest, and then we asked President Bashir to release you," Mbeki said addressing the four men: a Briton, a Norwegian, a South African and a South Sudanese.

"All of us will go together," he said before the freed men got into a minibus to leave as part of Mbeki's motorcade.

"We thank the government of Sudan and we appreciate the effort of president Mbeki. We are so happy now that we are going," the Norwegian, John Sorbo, said on behalf of his three colleagues.

The captives appeared to be in good condition but their shoes were dirty.

They smiled and shook hands with the defence minister and Sudanese military officers.

Diplomats said the captives were later turned over to their respective embassies.

"The UN will take over the rest of the arrangements," South African ambassador Graham Maitland told AFP as he met with his freed countryman Thabo Siave.

The United Nations has identified the men as its staff, and asked for them to be released to the United Nations.

Norwegian ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud said they would leave Sudan under UN auspices, "on the first available flight" back to their base in South Sudan.

"They all appreciate the way they have been treated while they were in custody," Kjemprud told AFP.

Hussein said they were freed because two of them worked for a South African company, "and we appreciate the efforts of president Mbeki to solve the issues between Sudan and South Sudan."

But Hussein accused the four foreigners of "working for one of the parties" because they were captured in a combat zone.

Sudan's army announced on April 28 that it arrested the men in the Heglig oil region as they collected "war debris for investigation," and suggested they were working in support of South Sudan in its "aggression" against the north.

Nationalist feeling has intensified in Sudan after South Sudan seized and occupied the north's main Heglig oilfield for 10 days in April, a move that coincided with Sudanese air strikes against the South.

It was the most serious fighting since the South's independence last July, and raised fears of a wider war.

The captives were flown from Heglig and held at a military facility in Khartoum.

They were under investigation because they illegally crossed the border into a military area, and had military equipment with them, the foreign ministry said.

The South African demining company Mechem has described the capture as an "abduction" by the Sudanese military while the group, including its employees Siave and the unidentified South Sudanese, were on a UN landmine clearance contract in South Sudan.

The border in the area is unmarked and disputed.
