Shabbat Meals: Grandma's Chinese Pepper Steak

By Lauren Bloomberg

Flickr: paumelia

We didn?t observe Shabbat. Well, maybe once or twice. Or perhaps I should say, not formally. Yes, we sat down for dinner as a family. Delicious food was served and we talked about our days. But we didn?t light candles. We didn?t say prayers and we didn?t break bread.

Growing up in Long Island?s suburbia, we were the type of family where the kids went to Hebrew school three days a week but we rarely ever went to services. We went to Jewish sleepaway camps and spent weekends on youth group retreats, but religion was not part of home life. Pepper steak, however, was.

It?s rare that food is served with as much ceremony as my paternal Grandmother Millicent Bloomberg?s pepper steak. In old-school style we?d start our meal with a halved grapefruit (carefully pre-sectioned until the serrated edged grapefruit spoon was invented) or slices of cantaloupe before moving onto the flank steak-and-green pepper stew. A portion would be scooped over rice (usually white) and sided with a lettuce-based salad.

Even when I was young, I wasn?t sure how faux-Chinese had ended up in my grandmother?s, and subsequently my mother?s, repertoire. I figured it was one of those recipes born out of the need to take a cut of meat and stretch the portion with the addition of vegetables and starch. But I couldn?t have been more wrong.

Like many ?family? recipes, this pepper steak was not an invention of my wonderful kin. It came from that place that many of the greatest ?secret? recipes come from: It was clipped from somewhere else. In this case, the idea was snipped from the pages of Long Island newspaper Newsday. From a 1987 article (grandma calls it an ad) devoted to the Chinese New Year. But don?t tell my cousins that.

Of course, while the recipe originated in the pages of Newsday, the version that turns up on the table in our home is twisted and different. It is also rarely the same twice. Don?t like green peppers? Grandma would substitute string beans. My mom liked to sneak broccoli into our diet by adding it to the mix. Both cooks are happy to create extra crunch and texture by straining a can of water chestnuts and mixing them in. Way before they became de rigeur, wheat berries might find their way into the rice.

Now I admit, pepper steak has never been my favorite. I prefer baked salmon or the excellent meatloaf that other relatives turned their noses at. However no dish ? be it served Monday or Friday or Saturday night ? was ever served up with the same excitement as the pepper steak. No entree more requested. No leftovers ever left over. A shabbat dinner with all of the pomp and none of the circumstance.

I saw your nanny: From Bad to Better

PERSPECTIVE
From Bad to Better, and it only took 2 years! I have been a nanny off and on for the last 5 years. I took my first nanny job during my second semester of college. I had been babysitting since the age of 13, and at this point, I had taken 3 Child Development classes as well as volunteered at a local Day Care Center. I used Care.com and Sittercity.com to find a nanny job. I had posted my profile with background and driving checks on file. I had received numerous responses and answers to all of the jobs that I had applied to, and thought things were going great. I narrowed the replies down to 3 families that I thought were offering the perfect gigs.

Family 1: A work at home mom and a dad who worked outside of the home about 60-70 hours a week. They had one 8 month old son. They needed someone to come Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-5:30pm. They were offering $11 an hour with 4 paid sick days a year, and 2 weeks paid vacation a year (one week of my choice, and one week of theirs). They lived in a safe neighborhood within walking distance to a local library, local Park, Gymboree, Toddler Play Center, and a Children?s Museum. Family 2: Mom and Dad both worked outside of the home. They had one 4 and a half month old daughter. They needed someone Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. They were offering $12 an hour, no paid sick days, one week paid vacation. They lived in the same neighborhood as I, probably only 5 miles away from me. They were offering to buy the nanny a membership to the local Zoo, the local Gymboree, and the local YMCA. Family 3: Mom worked outside of the home while dad worked in a home office and traveled about 15 days of every month. They had a 6 month old daughter. They needed someone Tuesday-Saturday from 7am-4pm. They were offering $11 an hour, 3 weeks paid sick days/vacation days a year, and lived in the same neighborhood as Family #1.

I chose to work with Family 3, mainly because I felt as though I had really connected with not only the parents, but also the baby. They were offering what I was asking, and the schedule seemed to really work for me. I started the job, and everything went great?for about the first month. At the beginning of month two, dad began traveling more, and mom?s job was becoming more demanding. They asked if I?d be interested in becoming a live in, and I agreed upon the agreement of an increase in pay. I moved in the following week, and my pay had increased to $14 an hour. Mom started working 12 hour days, and we saw dad about a week every month. I became very connected to the child, and it was almost as though I was a parent to this baby as her actual parents were rarely around. It wasn?t long until I was responsible for this baby during every moment she was awake. Weekends and weekdays started to blend, and I was feeling trapped. I dropped all of my classes that semester, and it got to the point where I was never away from the baby. About 11 months into the job, it had become too much. I needed space, I needed me time, I just needed to get out.

After a week of finding the time, I was finally able to sit down with the mother and father. I expressed my concerns, and they had told me they agreed. They also chose this time to tell me that they were expecting their second child. (How they found the time, I will never know!) They told me that they felt as though I wasn?t a good match for their family. I was shocked, devastated, angry. I wasn?t a match for their child? I was with her every second of every day. I loved her as though she was my own. I couldn?t imagine not seeing her everyday. While I was the one to start the conversation, I didn?t expect to take such a shocking turn. They let me know that they would only need me for one more week. MB?s parents had decided to move in with them and help raise their grandchildren. Parents and I had agreed that I would still be able to see the little girl, and I accepted it. I worked the following week, and received my final paycheck. I wasn?t given a thank you for time/services, I wasn?t given any sort of bonus, I wasn?t even told goodbye by the parents.

I tried to contact the family numerous times that following month, and still to this day have never heard back from them. I felt like I had lost a part of me. I miss that little girl so much, still to this day. Since I left that job, I have been working as an Infant/Toddler Class instructor at many local Recreation Centers. I taught classes such as Baby Sign, Music and Movement, Baby Yoga, Focus and Flexibility, Mommy and Me, Ballerina Babies, and a few others. I did this job for about a year, before I decided to go back to school. Upon reaching the decision to go back to school, I decided to go back to a career as a Nanny. I began the strenuous search for a job, interviewed with many families. This time around, I made my requests very clear, demanded the use of a contract, searched more for a family who practiced parenting styles similar to mine.

After 3 months of searching, I finally found the job that worked for me. I now work for a family with a 6 month old baby girl. The parents both work outside of the home. We have a mutual trusting relationship. We have a respect for each other and are working together every day to raise this amazing baby. I have no complaints over my new job. I have been here for 3 months now, and have not had a bad moment in this job. They have accepted me into their family. I work M-F 7am-3:30pm. I am invited to their weekly family game night. I occasionally babysit for them outside of my scheduled work hours. I get a month off every three months paid. After 2 years, I have found my happiness. - Anonymous

The Simple Process Of Changing The Storm Door On Your Home

Installing a Storm Door on Your Own Because of it's frequent use, storm doors are usually one of the first replacements for any homeowner. Keeping your storm door in good condition is important, as it not only adds beauty to your home- it also protects your exterior door as well. A worn out storm door can be quite unattractive, and can take away from the value of your home. Fortunately, installing storm doors are simple and don't take a lot of time. You can do it yourself, and quite possibly increase the value of your home.

Getting the Measurements It is important to have the correct size measurement of your old storm door, to ensure you purchase a new one in the right size. This can be accomplished by simply measuring the height and the width of the entrance opening. However, if you will be removing the door yourself, it is much easier to simply measure the door. Flanges secure the door to the home;you will want to check the size of the flange because it can very. Making sure you have measured everything correctly will decrease any chance of having to do any unnecessary adjustments. Buying the wrong size door could lead to having to make adjustments on the opening, or the door itself. Avoid the extra work by double checking the size of the flange as well as the old door.

Purchasing Your Storm Door Choosing the right door is the easy part. What kind of door you want is totally up to you, however make sure it fits the style of your home. If the store does not have the correct size, it may have to be ordered. This will not take long, so don't be overly concerned should this happen. This way you'll get the door you want, in the correct size.

Unpacking the Door and Its Hardware Once you receive your new door, be sure to unpack it safely. Doing so on the grass is not a good idea, because you will have many screws to handle which could get lost. Your door will come with twenty to thirty screws, as well as a spring and chain attachment. Don't worry about the flanges, they will most likely already be attached to the door along with the hinges. The screws will be to attach the new door, and the spring and chain will be to avoid the door's swing from being too harsh. Automatic door closers may come with the new door, however if it does not you may want to consider purchasing one. Although you can use an old one, it just might be a good idea to have a new one with the new door. This will lessen the chance of parts wearing out quicker than others.

Fitting the Door Into the Entrance If you have purchased the correct size door, it should slide into the opening of the entrance with no problem. Be sure to check that all four sizes fit securely, and there is a square shape at the top. You can use a carpenter's square to make sure this is correct. The flange will be extend to three sides of the door, if everything is the way it should be. Have someone hold the door for you will you insert the screws. This will help to keep the door leveled, as it will not open and close if it is not leveled. Also be sure that the door does not drag over the threshold. This is quickly wear out the bottom of your door, and make unnecessary noise as well.

Fastening the Door to Your Home It is best to use an electric screwdriver, to ensure the screws are in securely. A cordless screwdriver would be best, however it is okay if you do not have a cordless one- no need to buy a new one. Put the screws into the flange from the top first, but make sure not to screw them too tight. This will dent the flange, leaving an uneven appearance. Check the door before putting all the screws in, to be sure they are level and square. You don't want to have an uneven door, so after putting screws for the top corners in, take your carpenter's square and double check.

Final Touches to Getting the Job Done Once the screws are inserted, put the inside catch for the latch on the jamb. This will take two or three screws. After doing so, make sure the chain is fastened to the top of the door, but if using an automatic closer make sure it is fastened to the door and jamb. Adjust it so that the door will close and latch. Caulk can be used around the outter part of the flanges, in order to seal them to the home. Once this is done, throw away all wrapping and clean the area of all extra pieces, or garbage. You are now ready to not only bask in the glory of your accomplishment, but you and your family can enjoy a new and beautiful storm door.

Retired Homeowners Living in Property Goldmine - Property Insurance

Many retired homeowners are living in property that could make them substantial sums of money if sold. New figures out today from Retirement Solutions show that the over-65s are sitting on property with ?757 billion of unrealised equity. Despite gloomy predictions in the housing market, the amount of equity per property has increased by almost ?3000 over the last couple of years as the market has stabilised in many areas following the falls that came as a result of the credit crunch.

This has helped fuel the equity release market. Retirement Solutions, who carried out the research, is an equity release firm. Group Director Dean Mirfin said that ?whatever happens in the housing market over-65s own considerable property wealth which represents a massive investment success as they no longer have mortgages on houses they may have bought more than 25 years ago?.

Elderly homeowners who have equity in their property could choose to look for an equity release deal so that they have some liquid cash to enjoy in their retirement. Others may feel that they would rather keep all the value of their homes in order to pass the asset on to their children and grandchildren when they die. Which option is likely to be the best one for pensioner homeowners may depend on where they live. In London and the South-East, pensioners own around a third of property equity. They have seen gains of nearly ?16,000 on average in the value of their properties. At the other end of the scale, those in the East Midlands have seen the value of their properties fall by an average of ?700.

Homeowners with significant and growing equity may feel that they can afford to take some of it out of the property now without risking their ability to pass on an inheritance. Equity release can also sometimes be used to pay for care while avoiding the need to sell a much-loved family home. If you have elderly relatives who are staying in their home and using equity release to pay for in-home care, it is important that you make sure they keep up with the financial and practical realities of running a home as they get older. Make sure that they are able to budget for bills, including property insurance as well as utility bills and manage basic maintenance and cleaning.

In an often uncertain housing market, the over-65s are able to benefit from having paid off their mortgages. However they choose to use that asset, it is one that can help give them (and often their families) a little peace of mind in an uncertain world.

Letter of Solidarity to the CCA Member Churches in Pakistan

?National Council of Churches in Pakistan It is with great shock and disbelief that we received the news about Rimsha, a Christian girl with Down syndrome, in Pakistan, who may be punished by death after she was seen holding burning pages of the Quran. We are also dismayed that she has been arrested under the blasphemy law in Pakistan, which states that defaming Islam is a capital offence. The news reached us during the Asian Church Leaders Theological Conference, convened by the CCA, at Hsinchu city in Taipei from 22 - 27 August 2012. All the 56 participants are equally distressed about this news, have prayed with deep concern and convey feelings of solidarity to all the Christians in Pakistan. It is unfortunate that this incident has been blown out of proportion by the public who have not taken the time or the effort to consider the vulnerability and innocence of this helpless girl who is now in a state of shock and to make matters worse is separated from her parents who are also under protective custody, fearing the anger of the public. We also view with concern the religious tensions that have forced Christians to temporarily flee Mehrabad, the Islamabad neighborhood where Rimsha resides, and the disruption it has caused in the lives of people. While expressing our solidarity with the churches in Pakistan and those who are always under the threat of the law that hangs over them as a Damocles? sword, we hope and pray for a review of this draconian Blasphemy law that does not take into account the helplessness of differently-abled children who are defenseless and unaware of any act of theirs. We would urge the Church and Civil society to call for a revision of not only the Blasphemy law but all such laws that discriminate and punish people on the basis of religion and gender, so that democratic institutions remain just and fair and can function without fear or favor. Please let us know if we can do anything to be of assistance. In solidarity and prayers,

Sincerely

Rev. Dr. Henriette Hutabarat Lebang

Witnesses detail hair and beard-cutting attacks by Amish sect

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - The son of an Amish man who prosecutors say was the victim of a hate crime told a Cleveland jury on Wednesday how his elderly father begged for his beard and hair not to be shaved off as his wife and daughters wept.

"I heard my father say, ?Don't shear me, don't shear me'," Andy Hershberger told jurors. "I saw hair flying." Hershberger said he also was grabbed and a small part of his beard and hair was shaved.

Hershberger was one of two witnesses who gave accounts of hair and beard-cutting attacks at the trial of Amish sect leader Samuel Mullet, Sr. and 15 of his followers.

They are charged with attacking nine men and women last fall in southeastern Ohio. Amish women do not cut their hair and the men do not cut their beards after marriage.

In an opening statement on Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan explained, "The beard and the hair are symbols of Amish righteousness, religious symbols that God is present in their lives.

Police have said the motive was revenge because families shunned from Mullet's community had been accepted by other Amish communities. Defense attorneys have said the attacks were family disputes or inter-religious disagreements on how to live a righteous Amish life.

Barbara Miller, Mullet's sister and mother of three of the men on trial, gave an emotional account of the night her waist-long hair was cut to her ears by a group of women that included her daughter and daughter-in-laws.

Miller, wearing a long black dress and white bonnet, recounted how her sons held down her husband and shaved his hair and beard. She told the jury that she had wanted to hug one of her sons, but "they were not my boys that night."

She said she was told by her children that she was going "straight to hell", and her son Lester called her a "whore" when they found out that she and her husband were leaving the community where her brother was bishop.

Miller said she used to have a good relationship with her brother, but he had become more "Old Testament, and we are more New Testament," explaining that by Old Testament she meant "more violence, angry, hateful."

She said her brother had become "angry, angry, very angry, screaming and yelling, and no one could do anything right, and you didn't know what set him off. He was a dictator."

Amish women spectators who had come to court to support Miller wept during her testimony.

Hershberger said that five men had gone to his home demanding to speak with his 76-year-old father, a bishop in the Amish community, before grabbing both men to shave their beards and hair.

Hershberger took the stand after agreeing to be truthful in his testimony rather than take the standard oath on the Bible because the Amish do not believe in oath taking.

(AP) ? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney swept to the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night at a storm-delayed national convention, every mention of his name cheered by delegates eager to propel him into a campaign to defeat President Barack Obama in tough economic times.

Romney watched on television with his wife, Ann, at a hotel suite across the street from the convention hall as the convention sealed his hard-won victories in the primaries and caucuses of last winter.

New Jersey put him over the top in a ritual roll call of the states.

A parade of convention speakers mocked Democratic President Obama mercilessly, as if to make up for lost time at an event postponed once and dogged still by Hurricane Isaac.

The Democratic president has "never run a company. He hasn't even run a garage sale or seen the inside of a lemonade stand," declared Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican Party.

To send Romney and ticketmate Paul Ryan into the fall campaign, the convention quickly approved a conservative platform that calls for tax cuts ? not government spending ? to stimulate the economy at a time of sluggish growth and 8.3 percent unemployment.

Ann Romney's speech was scheduled as a prime-time highlight, an appearance meant to cast her multimillionaire-businessman-turned-politician husband in a soft and likable light before a national TV audience.

"Tonight I want to talk to you from my heart about our hearts," she said in excerpts of her speech released in advance by her husband's campaign.

"I want to talk not about what divides us but what holds us together as an American family. I want to talk to you tonight about that one great thing that unites us, that one thing that brings us our greatest joy when times are good, and the deepest solace in our dark hours.

"Tonight, I want to talk to you about love."

Aides said Romney would be in the hall when she spoke.

While there was no doubt about Romney's command over the convention, the residue of a heated campaign for the nomination was evident inside the hall.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who never won a primary or caucus, drew several dozen delegate votes. Earlier, his supporters chanted and booed after the convention adopted rules they opposed, but were powerless to block, to prevent those votes from being officially registered.

Opinion polls made the race a close one as the Republicans' days of pageantry and speechmaking began in earnest, and the man tapped to deliver the keynote address set the stakes.

"Conventions are always huge for a challenger, because they're the ones introducing themselves" to the voters, said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Convention planners squeezed two days of speeches and other convention business into one after scrapping Monday's scheduled opener because of fears that Isaac would make a direct hit on the Florida Gulf Coast.

That threat fizzled, but it was instantly replaced by another ? that Republicans would wind up holding a political celebration at the same time the storm turned its fury on New Orleans, devastated almost exactly seven years ago by Hurricane Katrina.

Romney's convention planners said they were in frequent contact with weather forecasters, but they declined to discuss what contingency plans, if any, they had to accelerate plans for him to deliver a formal acceptance speech Thursday night.

"This is obviously the biggest speech of my life," Mrs. Romney said as she visited the custom-made podium to prepare for her remarks.

Ratification of a party platform was prelude to Romney's nomination, a document more conservative on abortion than the candidate.

On economic matters, it backs extension of the tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 and due to expire at year's end, without exception. It also calls for an additional 20 percent reduction in income tax brackets that Romney favors.

In a time of 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in the post-World War II era, that went to the crux of the campaign for the White House.

By contrast, Obama wants to allow existing tax cuts to expire on upper income taxpayers, and has criticized Romney's overall economic plans as a boon to millionaires that would raise taxes on the middle class.

The GOP platform also pledges that a Republican-controlled Congress will repeal, and Romney will sign, legislation to repeal the health care legislation Obama won from a Democratic-controlled Congress. So, too, for the measure passed to regulate Wall Street in the wake of the 2008 economic collapse.

On abortion, the platform says, "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

Romney opposes abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or when "the health and life of the mother" are at stake, he said in a convention week interview.

Obama, who accepts renomination at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week, campaigned in Iowa Tuesday as he set out on a tour of college campuses in battleground states in hopes of boosting voter registration among college students.

Before departing the White House, he made a point of appearing before reporters to announce the government's latest steps to help those in the way of Isaac. He signed a declaration of emergency for Mississippi and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local storm response efforts in the state.

His surrogates did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said, "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Female voters, too, prefer the president over his challenger, and Democrats have done their best to emphasize GOP opposition to abortion and even suggest the party might try and curtail access to contraceptives if it wins power.

Whatever the impact of those issues, the polls show the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race, and on that, the voters narrowly say they trust Romney more.

In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama.

However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, and 27 percent said Romney.

The convention took place in an atmosphere of security that was both stringent and selective. Thousands of police from all over the country, joined by National Guard troops, Secret Service and others, stood in small groups at checkpoints, demanding those entering a secure area display proper credentials numerous times.

But former Michigan Gov. John Engler and an aide were hustled to the front of a long line waiting to clear security at one building.

Aside from Paul, Romney's long-ago rivals for the party nomination had bit roles at his convention, if that.

Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain posed for a photo after running into each other at the convention center. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were also in town, as well, both with speaking slots, unlike Bachmann and Cain.

Raccoons spreads dangerous diseases as they invade Europe, Spanish researchers find

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Furry, agile, intelligent and voracious: the raccoon is far from being a cuddly toy, which is what many people believe when they get one as a pet. It is more like an invader that escapes and is able to adapt and survive in new habitats. According to a study, its expansion across Spain and Europe is bringing infectious and parasitic diseases like rabies. This puts the health of native species and people at risk.

Originating in North America, the raccoon (Procyon lotor) is an invasive species that has established itself in Europe due to hunting and the fur trade along with its acquisition as a pet. In Spain, its presence in the wild is already commonplace in Madrid and Guadalajara and is sporadic in other regions such as the island of Mallorca. Its presence is however far from welcomed.

"Due to its rapid expansion and the long list of illnesses that it may carry, it poses a health risk that we must bear in mind," according to Beatriz Beltr?n-Beck, the lead author of the study published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research and researcher at the Research Institute of Hunting Resources (IREC, joint centre of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, the CSIC, and Castilla-La Mancha Council).

Bearing in mind that its population density could exceed 100 raccoons per km2, the success of the expansion of this small opportunistic carnivore is down to its ability to quickly adapt to different surroundings and omnivorous food habitats, its high reproductive potential and the absence of natural predators.

However, as Beltr?n-Beck points out, "the impact that their expansion and invasion could have on the environment and the health of native species and humans is unknown." The researcher adds that the increase in population numbers and expansion to other countries and/or urban environments could increase the transmission of dangerous parasites and illnesses to domestic animals and humans.

The guest that nobody wants in their home

The research team gathered all types of information on the infectious and parasitic diseases that raccoons can transmit. The aim was to assess the propagation risk of infections along with possible control methods. But, according to the author, "there is little data in Europe on this species."

Rabies and a very pathogenic parasite to man (Baylisascaris procyonis), which was found in Germany, are some of the most significant illnesses found in the raccoon. But, along with bacterial illnesses, these are added to the West Nile virus which affects human, birds, horses and sheep.

Although in Western Europe rabies have been eliminated thanks to the oral vaccination for foxes (Vulpes vulpes), there is still concern that the raccoon could complicate the situation in some areas of Eastern Europe that are still home to rabies. In recent years 142 cases of rabies in raccoons have been identified, above all in Ukraine, Estonia, Germany and Lithuania.

This small American carnivore has been confirmed to be the host of the nematode worm Baylisascaris procyonis, which is responsible for Larva migrans, an illness caused by larval migration and parasite persistence under the skin, in the brain and in other organs. In the past this disease could only be found in America but is now emerging and on the rise in Europe.

"The infected raccoons can scatter millions of nematode B. procyonis eggs, which cause significant environmental contamination," warn the scientists. In the USA, between 68% and 82% of mammals have this parasite. Prevalence is also high in Germany although in Japan, for example, the parasite was not detected in any of the 1,688 raccoons captured for the purposes of other studies.

According to Beltr?n-Beck, "more epidemiological studies are necessary on the current health situation and the implementation of measures that limit the possible impact of invading raccoons."

An unpleasant "pet"

Given its exotic origin and its rapid expansion since the 1970's, the raccoon is considered an invasive species in Europe. However, the majority of European countries, like Spain, do not control the trade of this animal, which is introduced onto the market as a pet.

"The case of Spain is a good example. The origin of its expansion is probably due to it escaping from the home where it was kept as a pet and due to the owners releasing it into the countryside when it reaches adulthood and becomes aggressive," adds the researcher.

According to the researcher, "this is mainly the case because there is a complete lack of knowledge of the biology, ecology, distribution and population density of the raccoon in Europe.

Commonplace Sex Fetishes | ArticlePDQ.com

If you?re into quote unquote usual intercourse, you might not realise exactly how many sex fetishes are in existence or perhaps even how favoured they are. Erotic fetishes are generally something that are carried out many many times or a specific thing which you savour watching by yourself or alternatively together with a sexual partner in order to attain a stage of sexual excitement. Sex-related fetishism can be a fixation associated with physical objects such as underwear, shoes or even real leather clothes, or even areas of the body including boobs or toes. Some people even have fetishes relating to blood! Your partner could even have their own sex fetish which you?re currently unaware of. A few of the most widely recognised sex fetishes are submission and domination, roleplay, voyeurism, wife swapping and group intercourse, leather and vinyl, feet and heels, and anal pursuits.

Submission and Domination

Amongst the most commonly employed sexual fetishes is without a doubt domination and submission. It is commonly believed that those that normally take most of the decision making in their day to day lives want to experience a role reversal in terms of sexual activities and prefer to become the sexual partner who?s the submissive instead of the dominating person. Anal Pursuits

Anal sexual activity is savoured by men and women alike, although some heterosexual adult men don?t choose to talk about it too loudly because of the anxiety of their maleness being called in to debate. Your rectum has a great deal more nerve endings than either the phallus or the vaginal area meaning that it is thought to bring about a better climax for both females and males. Anal sextoys are also frequently used by both women and men in anal intercourse to elevate the intimate pleasure sustained.

Vinyl, Latex and Leather

Employing latex, leather or vinyl for sex purposes can be regarded as an alternative variety of role-play considering the practice involves putting on any of these forms of clothes and having sexual intercourse in this clothing. The closely fitted nature of such kinds of clothing results in a more intense sexual pleasure and BDSM accessories like BDSM collars, blindfolds, floggers and wrist cuffs also are made use of in conjunction with them.

This selection of fetishes merely scratches the surface whereby sexual fetishism is involved. The things you might consider to be standard sexual intercourse could well have an aspect of fetishism attached with it. In fact, even the preference to see your partner dressed up in enticing items of lingerie may be regarded by some people as a fetish!

Research finds Medicare and private insurance spending similar ...

Variations in health care spending by Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) are similar throughout the state despite previous research, which found significant spending differences between the private and commercial sector in McAllen, Texas. The latest research results from the University of Texas Health e Center at Houston (UTHealth), the Commonwealth Fund, and the Brookings Institution are published in the December issue of the American Journal of Managed Care.

Researchers compared variations in spending and inpatient admissions in 32 Texas regions between Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, the state's largest health insurer, and did not find significant differences.

"This research was based on aggregate data and leaves many questions unanswered about the causes of the variation in Medicare and private insurance spending" said Luisa Franzini, Ph.D., professor and director of the Division of Management, Policy and Community Health at The University of Texas School of Public Health, a part of UTHealth.

Recently, BCBSTX provided a gift to UTHealth to form The University of Texas School of Public Health/Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Research Program in Payment Systems and Policy, a research program to foster research about cost and utilization of health care services in Texas.

"The funds and data provided by BCBSTX will allow us to investigate sources of variations in medical spending so that we can develop specific policies to control variations and lower healthcare expenditures," said Franzini. "We are in the process of conducting research in order to provide more definitive explanations and recommendations for the public and commercial sectors."

Previous research by Franzini and collaborators had compared Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas spending levels in McAllen and El Paso and found significant differences. "The results for the entire state of Texas indicate that high Medicare spending rates in the McAllen are an outlier," said Franzini.

Romney's lying machine

Every campaign exaggerates and distorts. But Mitt Romney's campaign has a well-financed machine of distortions behind it.

By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / August 25, 2012

Billionaire Charles Koch (shown here in a 2007 file photo) and his brother were two of the founders of 'Americans for Prosperity,' which bought some $27 million in political ads that have aired in 11 swing states.

I?ve been struck by the baldness of Romney?s repetitive lies about Obama ? that Obama ended the work requirement under welfare, for example, or that Obama?s Affordable Care Act cuts $716 billion from Medicare benefits.

He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Clinton. He has written 13 books, including ?The Work of Nations,? his latest best-seller ?Aftershock: The Next Economy and America?s Future," and a new?e-book, ?Beyond Outrage.??He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine and chairman of Common Cause.

The mainstream media along with a half-dozen independent fact-checking organizations and sites have called Romney on these whoppers, but to no avail. He keeps making these assertions.

Every campaign is guilty of exaggerations, embellishments, distortions, and half-truths. But this is another thing altogether. I?ve been directly involved in seven presidential campaigns, and I don?t recall a presidential candidate lying with such audacity, over and over again. Why does he do it, and how can he get away with it?

The obvious answer is such lies are effective. Polls show voters are starting to believe them, especially in swing states where they?re being repeated constantly in media spots financed by Romney?s super PAC or ancillary PACs and so-called ?social welfare? organizations (political fronts disguised as charities, such as Karl Rove and the Koch brothers have set up).

Romney?s lying machine is extraordinarily well financed. By August, according to Jane Mayer in her?recent New Yorker article, at least 33 billionaires had each donated a quarter of a million dollars or more to groups aiming to defeat Obama ? with most of it flooding into attack ads in swing states.

In early August, ?Americans for Prosperity,? one of the nonprofit front groups masquerading as a charity, and founded in part by billionaire right-wingers Charles and David Koch, bought some $27 million in ad time on spots now airing in eleven swing states.

So Romney?s lying machine is working.

But what does all this tell us about the man who is running this lying machine? (Or if Romney?s not running it, what does it tell us about a man who would select the people who are?)

We knew he was a cypher ? that he?ll say and do whatever is expedient, change positions like a chameleon, eschew any core principles.

Yet resorting to outright lies ? and organizing a presidential campaign around a series of lies ? reveals a whole new level of cynicism, a profound disdain for what remains of civility in public life, and a disrespect of the democratic process.

The question is whether someone who is willing to resort to such calculated lies, and build a campaign machine around them, can be worthy of the public?s trust with the most powerful office in the world.

Longtime University of Scranton baseball coach Howerton dies at 67

Like so many area youngsters who wanted to get a start in baseball, Jamie Shevchik walked through the doors at Battaglia's Sporting Goods in downtown Scranton. He went for the batting gloves and some time in the cages.

As the years went by, he kept going back to see "Howie."

Bill Howerton earned a reputation as the steady hand at the helm of the University of Scranton baseball team for 16 years, from 1986 through the 2002 season. He was the son of a big leaguer, and he also spent 11 seasons as coach of the Scranton Red Soxx and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Twins in the Atlantic Coast Baseball League. He even spent a season playing professionally in the San Francisco Giants organization.

But to guys like Shevchik, he was the friendly, helpful man all too eager to tell a story or help find some equipment for anyone who walked into Battaglia's.

Now the coach at Keystone College, Shevchik never played for Howie. He coached against him, but not with him. But to Howie, that never mattered.

He taught baseball the way he lived life. Straight-forward. With class.

Howerton died unexpectedly Friday morning. He was 67. The cause of death has not been released, but those who knew Howie - and practically anybody who participated in area athletics did - said the effect of his death will be felt as long as bats are swung in Lackawanna County.

"He has been like a second father to me," Shevchik said, fighting back tears. "He has always been the guy. He was a mentor to me. Any time I needed advice on baseball, he was the guy I went to.

"He has helped so many people. Even my players. Any time they needed anything - help, equipment - they went to him. Since I started coaching in the early '90s, I'm not sure I've ever gone to anybody but Bill."

A good enough player to be drafted by the San Francisco Giants out of Diablo Valley College in California, Howerton's accomplishments as a coach in the Scranton area were extensive.

In 1975, he managed the Scranton Red Soxx to an ACBL championship, and more than a decade later, he began his long run at the helm of the Royals, where he went 182-321-3. The fledgling program had back-to-back winning seasons in 1989 and 1990, and in 1997, Howerton's Royals won the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom League championship.

"It was an enjoyable experience, one I'll never forget," Howerton said upon his retirement in 2002. "I had the pleasure of coaching some outstanding players and working with some great people. More importantly, many of my former players have remained lifelong friends, and I'll always cherish that."

Brian Jardine was one of those lifelong friends.

After a stellar career at Moravian College, where he played several times against Howerton's Royals, Jardine accepted an opportunity extended by Howerton to coach with him. So, in 1998 and 1999, Jardine sat alongside Howerton on the Royals bench, learning as he went, from a coach he came to know as a brilliant game strategist.

"It's funny, because when you come out of college, you're so young and intense. A kid makes an error, and you just want to jump all over him for it," Jardine, who is currently the coach at North Pocono High School, said. "But he was just so calm and relaxed. He knew the game so well. He knew when to say something.

There were times when Howerton got "fired up," Jardine said, but during the flow of the game "he'd never crack."

"He sort of just knew what he was doing, all the time," Jardine said. "What he does in times like that is what a lot of players who played for him remember. As a young coach, that's something I learned from him."

Jardine called Howerton one of the best in-game decision makers he had ever seen, and Kevin Southard saw it first-hand.

The sports information director at the University of Scranton, Southard recalled many occasions where he'd be taking score on the bench and watch as Howerton made decision after decision, coaching move after coaching move, that only made sense in the moments after he made it.

"He would see things with people batting, or when they were on the basepaths," Southard said. "You'd look at the same thing, and it wouldn't hit you. But he'd make these observations, and you'd just think 'Wow, that was dead on.' It was baserunning, a throw to the plate, how a guy swung a bat. He just truly understood the essence of the game."

n n n

Working at Battaglia's, Howerton was the go-to guy for youngsters and teams alike, from those playing at the highest levels to those just starting out.

When the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons first opened for business in 1989, they went to Howerton and Battaglia's to furnish the team's uniforms and equipment, a role they held with the team for decades.

Howerton became much more than a business partner, too. He was a familiar face around the ballpark, sharing stories of baseball and local sports history with former general managers Bill Terlecky and Rick Muntean, who counted him as a close friend.

"He was an encyclopedia," longtime Red Barons and Yankees public address announcer John Davies said. "Without Bill, it's like a library burning down.

"He's going to be missed by a lot of people. He was a very, very good businessman. But he was a great person. He was one of the mainstays in local sports, be it high school, college or professional. He was always there for anybody."

Most often, he was there for Shevchik when he needed it. When he walked into Battaglia's as a 19-year-old, looking for uniforms for the Collegiate Summer Baseball League team he was hoping to start, admittedly knowing nothing about starting a team, it was Howie who sat him down with the price guides, sharing his knowledge and giving him his support.

When Shevchik's Keystone program went from the junior college ranks to four-year status, he found few NCAA Division III teams willing to face them. So Howerton made some calls to connections he had made at colleges and in the coaching ranks, scraping up opponents for a school that was one of Scranton's local rivals.

For prominent area coaches like Shevchik and Jardine, Roger Barren and Joe Vadala, there was no source of information or guidance or support better than what they found walking through those familiar doors at Battaglia's.

"We all grew up together. We're all part of that same group that became coaches," Shevchik said. "I think Bill Howerton played a huge part in all of our careers.

"I don't know if anybody is ever going to be able to take his place."

Legacy of well-liked Kang, Kirkland coach Mike Watson lives on

The Lake Washington High School and local softball communities suffered a great loss last Friday morning when Mike Watson, who coached the Kangs to a Class 3A state tournament berth last spring, died after suffering a heart attack while driving.

According to the ?Team Kellie? Facebook page Watson was taken to Swedish Hospital in Edmonds, where he underwent a 24-hour cooling treatment to help with brain trauma from the accident. In the early morning hours of Aug. 17, Watson suffered a second heart attack and was unable to be revived. The Facebook page was set up in support of Watson?s wife Kellie, as she battles ovarian cancer.

The 48-year-old Watson, who had coached fastpitch softball for more than 15 years, took over the head coaching position at Lake Washington after one of his closest friends, Troy Hennum, was placed on administrative leave just after the season got underway.

Hennum?s longtime goal was to turn the Kangs? fastpitch program around and into a yearly contender in the tough Kingco conference. He had no doubts about who his assistant would be when he was hired on as head coach in 2011.

?Mike had extremely strong knowledge of the game, but with that I knew he would gain the respect of the players and the community,? Hennum said. ?Mike was a coach who worked hard at the sport 12 months a year, not just three. When Mike took over the Kangs, I knew it was going to be fine.?

With Watson at the helm, Kangs? athletic director George Crowder marveled at Watson?s ability to connect with the girls on the team.

?He was well-liked, always positive with the girls, carried himself well, and knew the game of softball well,? Crowder recalled, who was the head fastpitch coach at Eastlake High in Sammamish for 16 years. ?I had a tremendous amount of respect for him, I loved his demeanor in the dugout. Kids really cared for him.?

A RUN FOR THE AGES

With Watson in charge the heart of the league season got underway last April. The jovial coach was able to maximize the potential of his talented team, while creating a dugout atmosphere that was second-to-none.

Crowder admitted he was concerned about how the girls would adjust to the sudden change in leadership, but the work that Watson did, along with assistant coach Traci Tawney, produced results.

?They did a really good job of keeping those kids focused on what?s important,? Crowder said. ?They brought those individuals together as a team, they cared for one another, and I think that?s a reflection on the coaching staff.?

The team peaked in the postseason, with key victories in the 3A Kingco Tournament against Bellevue, 3-1, and Mount Si, 4-2, to take the No. 2 seed into the district tournament. After grinding out a 1-0 win against Bishop Blanchet, the Kangs secured only their second state berth in 12 seasons by outlasting Mount Si again in the semifinals, 8-6.

Even though the Kangs went two-and-out at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey during the state tournament, Watson?s accomplishment as the interim head coach had turned the program around.

Crowder, who coached the Wolves to a state title in 2008 before resigning to take a teaching position at Lake Washington, said what made Watson unique was his ability to ?click? with his girls, and stay calm and supportive when everything was on the line.

?His demeanor was very positive, very level-headed, on an even keel,? remembered Crowder, who attended many of Watson?s games throughout the season. ?You want someone who can take care of the kids, be able to coach them and relate with them, and inspire them. He did all those things for us.?

FAMILY MAN

Watson was not going to stay on as the Kang Fastpitch head coach beyond the 2012 season, according to Crowder. That honor was reserved for Lake Washington teacher and assistant coach Traci Tawney, who played at the University of Washington.

Watson was being heavily considered for the head coaching job at Mountlake Terrace High School, where his younger daughter Kelsey will be entering her senior year.

?That?s where his heart was,? said Crowder. ?He was over here to help (Hennum) build a program but Mike?s desire was to coach at Mountlake Terrace. He?s going to be missed because the kids cared about him. I cared about him. He did a great job for us.?

His older daughter, Kayla, played for Mountlake Terrace before attending Central Washington University.

News of Mike?s sudden passing, amid Kellie?s battle with cancer, was a double-tragedy for the Watson family.

The Mountlake Terrace community has come together to help the Watsons in their time of need, hosting a garage sale last weekend to raise money for the family?s mounting expenses. Family friends have made a Facebook page, Mike Watson Memories, in his honor.

While some high school coaches can hardly be seen cracking a smile, Watson?s sense of humor, magnetic personality and sheer love of life will never be forgotten by those who were around him.

?There was not a practice or game that went by in which myself or a player was not cracking up due to Mike?s humor. What was most important to Mike was that everyone around him was having a blast,? Hennum reminisced. ?Mike was a class act all the time, not just at times. He was my best friend and a lot of the players? mentors. He will be deeply missed.?

Watson?s Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at Alderwood Community Church, located at 3403 Alderwood Mall Boulevard in Lynnwood. Those wishing to make donations can contribute at any Boeing Employee Credit Union (BECU) location to the Michael Watson Benevolent Account.
