Re: ?Must U.S. rely on Saudi oil?? Aug. 18 editorial.
When will ?U.S. oil reliance? trigger the conversation about oil as a ?prop? for dysfunctional social behavior, and not just a market commodity that responds to supply (aka politics and profits) and demand (aka consumer behavior). Is mass attention on symptoms (diminishing world oil resources) and not on the root conditions that created the symptoms? Is it possible that U.S. citizens (me included) have made purchase power the underlying value of the freedom that we hold dear in our country?
Oil is a necessary commodity today. It?s a bad habit that we will go to any length to feed. Does this sound like an addiction? Supporting alternative and renewable energy, as well as moving oil from Canada to Texas, might be the ?step-down drug.? Freedom, however, is bound to responsibility, and the cure to our addiction is strengthening the will of all citizens to be responsible and informed.
