London 2012: The Social Olympics | Mobilize.org

Posted by Kirstin.Mohammed Featured

That time has come again where the greatest athletes from every corner of the world come out to compete and get the opportunity to prove themselves the best. That?s right it?s the 2012 Summer Olympic Games of the XXX Olympiad! Chances are regardless of if you likes sports or not, you have been watching at least some of the events. The Olympics are possibly the biggest occasion for countries to unite and enable their citizens to show their patriotism.

Millennials have proven to be just as big as fans of these games as older generations who have certainly seen many more of them than we have. YPulse conducted a survey asking almost 400 Millennials about their interest in the Olympics. Over half of those questioned showed their keenness of the Olympics. About 1/3 of the Millennials said they love it and have been looking forward to it. An additional 26 percent said they really enjoy it.

With the London Olympics being the most social Olympics ever, it?s only natural that Millennials feel that much more intrigued by them, we are, after all, a social generation. This can be best displayed by the trending topics on twitter, which have been things surrounding the hype of particular events such as gymnastics and the fab five as an example. Millennials follow their favorite Olympians and tweet about their favorite events. We like to be involved in the excitement as much as we can, now with social networking sites we can. The @NBCOlympics twitter page has close to half a million followers on twitter. The Opening Ceremony of the London Games received more tweets than the whole Beijing Olympics in 2008. The official NBC Olympics website and their Youtube channel have events streaming Live and On Demand for your viewing convenience.

Millennials cited their most anticipated events as Swimming and Gymnastics then followed by Basketball. Michael Phelps has just become the most decorated Olympian of all time at the ripe age of 27 by winning the most Olympic medals. Obama took to his twitter to publicly congratulate the Olympian. Missy Franklin received a tweet from teen sensation Justin Bieber. Obama, Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey have tweeted at gymnast and teenage inspiration, Gabby Douglas, who has made her way into millions of people?s hearts with her exceptional skills. The way that social media is set up to connect people is phenomenal. I can?t imagine the rush these Olympians must have felt having not only won tons of medals but then having gotten shout outs from your celebrity crush, one of the most influential women or even the President of your country!

The Baby Boomers are likely to watch the Olympics at home with family, but Millennials are more likely to watch the Olympics as a social activity regardless of whether they watch it with their family or friends at home or out. Millennials look forward to events and occasions such as this to come together and bond.

The Olympics are a great symbol of nationalism and pride in ones country. The great athletes who represent their countries want to be the best they can be and the people watching want to get involved as much as they can. Millennials have taken the Olympic experience to a new level by integrating our beloved social media and networking into the games. This new way of experiencing the Olympics is groundbreaking and inviting more and more people to watch and ?participate? in the Olympic excitement.
